INFORMATIVE SPEECH

Assalamualaikum and very good morning to ladies and gentlemen, today I would like to
deliver a speech regarding of Tour of Duty as RMAF Tower Air Traffic Control Officer. Did you
know in year of 2010, ATC is in the rank of 4
th
out of top 5 stressful jobs in the United States?
(Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010 2011, Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S.) So, now you
know being as Air Traffic Controller is not so easy. For your information, in RMAF, Tower ATC
Officer work according to the shift. It is divided into 2 shifts namely P and A, whereby P Shift work
from 1.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m. and A Shift work from 7.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. then rest and come again
at 7.00 p.m. until 7.00 a.m. next day. For Tower ATC, there are 3 mains duty that need to carried
out which are first airfield inspection, secondly briefing regarding airfield status and the third is
handover and takeover shift. Due limited of time, here I can only explain just a part of the shift
within time 7.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m.
Firstly, as earlier as 6.30 a.m. the Tower Controller come work to carry out the first duty to
do airfield inspection. By using a land rover called Airfield 1 as transportation, they, after granted
permission from the duty tower controller on night shift, will enter the airfield and continue inspect
the condition and remove anything above of runway, main taxiway and taxiway, to check
serviceability of lightings, barriers and cables. Sometimes, during inspection on the runway, they
found aircraft part such as screw, stone, a death animal such as snake, bird, snail and big lizard.
The inspection also covered the condition of grass that might be too long because it will affect the
operation of aircraft. It takes about 45 minutes to complete the full inspection over the airfield.
Later on, they will fill up the Airfield Inspection Form with current status of airfield and to prepare
themselves a briefing to their top management.
Secondly, the Tower Controller continues their duty by giving a briefing regarding latest
information of the airfield. The briefing normally conducted at the Approach Room. For your
information, the Approach room is the area of the Radar Controller carry out their duty. During the
briefing, it not only the Tower Controller will deliver their brief, but also technician and Radar
Controller on night shift. The main purpose the need for the Tower Controller to a give briefing
regarding airfield condition is to let the top management to know any unserviceability or damage of
either runway or it associated area, lighting and other important thing. These require the Tower
Controller to give very detail on exactly position of damage area, which light is not functioning and
the position of long grass. The briefing takes time about 15 to 20 minutes to end and thereafter the
Tower Controller will prepare themselves to comes up to the tower for handover and takeover shift.
