Sri Ranganatha Temple, Srirangapatna
This 1200 year old temple is dedicated to Ranganatha a manifestation of Lord Vishnu. It was built by
the Gangas in the 9
th
Century and later on the temple was improved on by the Hoysalas and
Vijayanagara Kings. The temple is one of the set of three temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu on three
islands on the river Cauvery. Dont miss the Idol of Lord Vishnu in sleeping posture under the hood of
the great snake Anantha.
Sri Ranganatha Temple Darshan Timings: 8:00 9:30 am and 7:00 8:00 pm every day.

Tipu Sultans Summer Palace Daria Daulat Bagh, Srirangapatna
Daria Daulat Palace was built by Tipu Sultan in 1784, is based on Indo-Sarcenic architectural style and is
built of teakwood. This 230 year old palace is now a museum and houses Tipu memorabilia like coins,
clothes, arms and armaments, etc. The palace has beautifully studded with frescoes on its walls, the
outer walls have battle scene, while the inner walls have floral patterns. There are many paintings in the
palace including the famous "Storming of Srirangapattanam" painting by Sir Robert Porter, painted in
1800 AD; Tipus 3D effect warrior portrait by John Zaffany painted in 1780 and many paintings of Tipu
and his confidants by Thomas Hickey.

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary (Alternative destination to Sri Ranganatha Temple & Tipu Palace)
Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary was established at the behest of the famous ornithologist Dr Saleem Ali by
the Wodeyar Kings of Mysore in 1940. The small Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary consists of 3 islets and an
area of 40 acres on the river Cauvery, downstream from the KRS Dam. There have been about 170 birds

that have been recorded to return to Ranganathittu year after year. Popular birds at the sanctuary are
Painted Stork, Spoonbill, Woolly-necked Stork, Black-headed Ibis, Lesser Whistling Duck, Indian Shag,
Stork-billed Kingfisher, Egret, Cormorant, Oriental Darter, Heron, Great Stone Plover, River Tern and
Streak-throated Swallows.

Chamundeshwari Temple at Chamundi Hills
Chamundreshwari Temple is dedicated the Goddess Chamundreshwari who is an incarnation of Goddess
Kali or Durga. Chamundreshwari Temple was built on top of Chamundi Hills (the hill derives its name
from the Temple Deity) in the 12
th
Century by the Hoysala Kings and was renovated 17
th
Century by the
Vijayanagara Kings. The idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari is of gold and weighs 15 kgs. There is a 16 ft
tall & 25 ft l ong monoli th statue of Nandi on Chamundi hills whi ch i s very popular. Near the templ e is a statue of
Mahisasura, who was sl ai n by Goddess Chamundeshwari .

Mysore Palace
Mysore Palace was completed in 1912, and is the fourth structure to occupy the site. This palace
replaced the old palace mostly built of wood after it was destroyed in a fire and the new palace was
commissioned in 1897. This 145 ft. tall palace with five storied towers and three storied palace building
is built in Indo-Saracenic architectural style with fine gray granite, deep pink marble domes, and
expansive arches; and was designed by Henry Irwin. The palace interiors are studded with elegantly
carved doors, sprawling pavilions, regal chandeliers, beautiful stained glass ceilings and attractive
frescoes depicting scenes from the Indian epics.
Ambavilas or Diwan-e-khas is an exquisitely designed hall for the Kings private audience. This is by far
the most spectacular room of the palace complete with an elegantly carved rosewood doorway
embellished with ivory, ornately gilded columns, beautiful stained glass ceiling, spectacular chandeliers
and the mosaic floors embellished with semi-precious stones.
The Public Darbar Hall is for the Kings public audience. This l arges 6,500 sq ft hall has bottle shaped
pillars and is studded with numerous paintings including works from Raja Ravi Varma.
Kalyana Mantapa or the marriage hall is an impressive octagonal shaped hall with beautiful stain glass
ceiling and mosaic floor with peacock motifs.

Gome Thotti (Doll Hall) is the first hall of entry into the Palace for sightseeing and contains traditional
dolls along with Indian and European sculptures. The Doll Hall also displays the Golden Howda
decorated with 84 kgs of gold, which is used in the Dasara Procession now & previously used to carry the
King.

Mysore Palace Lighting Timings: 7:00 pm to 7:45 pm (Every Sunday and on all public holidays).
Mysore Palace Sound & Light Show Timings: 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm (On all days expect, Sundays & Govt.
Holidays). Please note that there has been instances that this show has been discontinued twice earlier,

Mysore Zoo
Mysore Zoo, one of the oldest Zoos in the world was established in 1892 by then King Maharaja
Chamaraja Wodeyar in his summer palace (originally called the Palace Zoo). It was built out as a private

Jaganmohan Palace (Alternative destination to Mysore Zoo)
Jaganmohan palace was built in 1861 as an alternative residence for the Royals and used as the main
residence as well as Public Darbar Hall from 1897 to 1912 while The Mysore Palace was being
constructed. Jaganmohan Palace was the where King Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV was coroneted in the
august presence of the then Viceroy and Governor General of India, Lord Curzon. The Jaganmohan
Palace was converted into an art gallery in 1875 exhibiting works from famous painters like Raja Ravi
Verma and Svetoslav Roerich. Watch the parade of miniature soldiers every hour on the French Clock
gifted to the Royals, catch it at 12 noon to see all the military contingents complete with their band-sets
do a march past.

Brindavan Gardens & KRS Dam
Brindavan Gardens was built adjacent to the KRS Dam across the river Cauvery in the year 1932. Sir
Mirza Ismail the then Diwan of Mysore conceived the idea of the gardens to be designed similar to the
Mughal style Shalimar Gardens of Kashmir. Brindavan Gardens is laid out on 3 terraces with water
fountains, manicured lawns, bushes, flower beds and trees. The Gardens has a musical fountain and
boating in the lake.
Brindavan Gardens & KRS Dam Timings: 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.
Brindavan Gardens Fountain Timings: 7:00 - 7:55 pm on weekdays & 7:00 - 8:55 pm on weekends and
holidays. During Winter: 6:30 - 7:25 pm on weekdays 6:30 - 8:25 pm on weekends and holidays.
Brindavan Gardens Musical Fountain Timings: Weekdays 6:30 7:30 pm. and weekends 6:30 8:30 pm.
Brindavan Gardens & KRS Dam Entry Fee: Rs.15 / person.
Note that the Brindavan Gardens were closed due to security reasons during the Cauvery Water Dispute
strife. During summer months when the water level is low, the working of fountains is suspended due to
shortage of water.
