STAKEHOLDERS
The major stakeholders identified in this project are the communities and families in the
village of Codo, the shipping companies who will ship the supplies over to East Timor and
the project team.

The problem that the villagers in Codo currently face is not having access to safe drinking
water. If this situation continues, the villagers of Codo will have to walk a far distance to
access clean water, or they will be forced to bath and drink from contaminated and disease
ridden water. This will lead to many health issues including waterborne disease like bacterial
and viral infections as well as kidney problems in the long term. The current life expectancy
at birth is 68.27 years. By implementing a water filtration system in every household, it is
hoped that the life expectancy of the villagers can be increased.

If nothing is changed, the villagers will continue to suffer. The yearly income for a household
in East Timor is approximately USD500, which a substantial amount of this income is
required to install the water filtration system in their household. The filtration system has
been designed in such a way to make full use of the skills of the villagers in making ceramic
pots and also is one of the lowest cost yet efficient system. However, the villagers will have
to use their own income to install this water purification system. This might disadvantage
the villagers, but is inevitable as the cost of the project has been kept to a minimum.

The villagers of Codo have a common interest towards improving the drinking water quality
in their village as this will only help them increase their life expectancy in reducing the
chances of waterborne diseases. However, not all of the villagers will approve of the project.
The major concern for the villagers is the durability of the water filtration system, how long
it will last and the overall cost of the system.

The villagers of Codo will prioritise the cost of the system in the solution to this problem as
their income is limited. The project teams priority in this project is to implement a water
purification system that is reliable, efficient, and safe to use and at the lowest possible cost.

The villagers of Codo will be involved in this project in various ways, for example, the
creation of the ceramic pots and regular maintenance of the water purification system will
be required to be done by them. The shipping companies will be shipping the supplies over
to East Timor, and these supplies include the activated charcoal and water taps. Their major
concern is the safety of the cargo. The project team will be involved by implementing the
water filtration system idea in the village of Codo as well as setting up education programs
in educating the villagers on how to regularly maintain the water purification system.

The project design will be championed by the various stakeholders including the project
team. The project team will aid in teaching the populace how to manage the water filter.
This includes regularly maintaining the insulated charcoal and condition of the pot. The
materials will be supplied to the populace by material companies arranged by the project
team but the final cost will be paid by the populace of Timor-Leste. The stakeholders who
possess the most influence are the companies that supply material toward the project
design. If the supply for material is low then demand for materials will increase along with
cost and this will cause future problems as it will force the villagers of Timor-Leste to pay
more. Companies that supply such materials will use this as a way to seek more profit. There
are also various companies that would oppose this project design but still benefit. Water
companies will oppose this project design as villagers will be less dependent on bottled
water and the company decreasing demand and profit for the water company. Water
companies will benefit from this as although demand decreases, the supply will increase
which will grant the companies more reserve. The populace of Timor-Leste will feel the
most empowered through the project design as the water filter will open up numerous
opportunities. If this problem is solved the populace will have access to clean water for
domestic use which will solve the dire problem of hygiene and sickness caused by
contaminated water. It opens opportunities for the children as they will be able to attend
school and not worry about collecting water from afar.
