Voorhees joins Relay for Life in Marlton
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
A Relay for Life may not have
taken place in Voorhees this year,
but that didnt stop the people of
Voorhees from finding a Relay
where they could continue to
raise money for the American
Cancer Society and the fight
against cancer.
According to Jeanette Golden,
chairperson of the Voorhees
Relay for Life, this year the
Voorhees Relay had problems
with its venue, so the teams sim-
ply joined the event in Marlton on
May 31 instead.
We have incredible teams and
an incredible mayor who sup-
ports the entire Voorhees Relay,
and we are just so grateful that
Marlton allowed us to come on
over and be celebrated, Golden
said.
Even with having to move the
Voorhees participants outside of
the town, this year about nine
Voorhees teams and more than 40
participants were still able to
raise more than $13,000.
Golden is no stranger to find-
ing ways to make Relay for Life
happen. She was the one who
started the first Voorhees Relay
three years ago.
When I moved to Voorhees,
there was no Relay or anything
like that, and I guess it was in my
blood, Golden said. It was some-
thing that I really admire, how
they support survivors and honor
those who didnt make it.
Golden, a three-time cancer
survivor, said Relay events are a
great way for cancer survivors to
come together and find others
they can relate to.
Unless youve ever heard the
words youve got cancer, you can
love somebody, care about them,
pretend to know, but unless
youve heard those words you
dont get it, Golden said. Were
not asking for Im sorry, but to
know that the other person has a
camaraderie with us.
Golden said the people at the
events without cancer also do a
great job honoring the survivors
and making them feel amazing.
The survivors are honored,
they get a free t-shirt, they get a
free luncheon, and everything is
free, Golden said. Were here to
boost everybody up that is a sur-
vivor, and it makes survivors real-
ize youre not alone. So much of
the time we all fight on our own.
We go to the clinic, we get our
chemo, we get our radiation, and
then were gone. This actually
brings people together for such
an amazing cause.
For those unsure about Relay
events, Golden encourages people
to look out for future Relays and
go to a Luminaria ceremony, the
part of the event where those
with cancer or those who have
died because of the disease are re-
membered with a candle inside a
bag placed along the track and lit
after dark.
This is such an amazing com-
munity event, and I encourage
people to look out for any Relay
for Life event and to come out to
the Luminaria ceremony, Gold-
en said. Take one lap around
when the Luminaria is starting
it will change your life. You cant
explain that to anybody, you have
to be here, you have to experience
it.
Golden said next year there
will once again be a Voorhees
Relay event in town, and she
hopes to see many people there
because anybody can participate.
Walk a lap every once and
awhile, Golden said. Its life
changing anybody can do it.
Ive seen people in wheelchairs,
Ive seen people with canes, Ive
seen people who were helped
around the track. Anybody can be
a part of the Relay for Life.
ZANE CLARK/The Sun
Although a Voorhees Relay for Life didnt take place in Voorhees this year, Voorhees Relay teams were
able to join the Marlton Relay for Life on the night of May 31 through the morning of June 1 at Cherokee
High School. Nine Voorhees teams and more than 40 participants were able to raise more than $13,000.

On Saturday, June 28 the Philadelphia
Phillies will be honoring Voorhees native
Kevin Trzcinski as the Wounded Warrior
of the Game at the 2:05 p.m. contest
against the Atlanta Braves.
Kevin is a 2005 graduate of Eastern Re-
gional High School and he is currently a
sergeant in the U.S. Army, 3rd Battalion,
7th Special Forces Group, Operational De-
tachment Alpha 7325. He has served our
country for four years.
On Jan. 22, while conducting combat op-
erations in Afghanistan, Kevin was shot in
the chest by a Taliban sniper. He was air-
lifted to Kandahar Hospital and immedi-
ately underwent surgery to remove the bul-
let that penetrated his body armor and en-
tered his chest cavity. He suffered major in-
juries to his left lung,
diaphragm, ribs and
spleen, forcing the re-
moval of his spleen.
A fragment of the
bullet remains be-
tween his heart and
spine.
On Jan. 24, with
his chest tube in his
hand, Kevin stood for
the first time since
his injury in order to
re-enlist for an addi-
tional four years of
military service.
Kevin was even-
tually transferred to
Walter Reed National Military Medical
Center in Bethesda, Md. He underwent
surgery the following week to remove
more bullet fragments and to repair his
damaged lung. He spent a total of three
weeks recovering in the hospital.
Today, Kevin is back at his home in Des-
tin, Fla., with his wife, Katie, awaiting his
next assignment.
I am privileged to know Kevin personal-
ly, having coached him for several years in
GVAA baseball. He is a true hometown
hero.
If you are interested in honoring Kevin

T
he principle of the American
Dream is simple: Work hard
and you can achieve anything.
It doesnt matter who you are, where
you come from or where you want to
go, you can get there in America.
The principle itself is simple, al-
though its not easy to attain. It takes
hard work, dedication and some good
old-fashioned luck.
The American Dream is why the
United States is considered the melt-
ing pot of the world.
Pilgrims first came to the New
World for something more. They got
that. Then their descendants fought
for the right to be independent and
continue that dream.
Generations that followed forged
successful, fulfilling lives here, some
starting with dirt and ending with
gold. That made our country even
more popular for more immigrants
from different parts of the globe.
This opportunity, the availability for
upward mobility, to make something
of yourself, is the crux of what we are.
But is that American Dream becom-
ing less of a reality and more of a pure
dream? Many people feel that it is.
CNNMoneys American Dream Poll
found that almost 60 percent of re-
spondents feel that the American
Dream no matter how they define it
is out of reach.
Thats not good. Whats even worse
is that adults between 18 and 34 said
that the dream is not only unattain-
able, but 63 percent said its impossi-
ble. Even worse, all Americans agree
with them. Their parents generation
who by the way, think they are better
off than their parents were say that
their kids, these 18-34 year olds, wont
be better off than them.
Yikes!
Maybe the survey results shouldnt
be all that surprising, considering the
recession that turned the world upside
down and has continued to have ill ef-
fects on the job market. But what the
results should be is a wake-up call.
The American Dream was the foun-
dation of our country, and it needs to
be for years to come. If any one gener-
ation finds that dream unattainable,
well lose our identity and most im-
portantly, well lose these people.
So what does this generation need?
It needs opportunity. It needs jobs. It
needs the availability of mobility.
Who can provide it? That is the
question that needs to be answered.
The American Dream...
...its out of reach for most Americans, so says a new poll

By NICK COHEN
The Sun
For the first time in more than
a decade, the Vikings football
team of Eastern High School will
have a new voice in its ear for the
upcoming season.
Vice principal for athletics Phil
Smart announced that Daniel Bo-
guszewski will be the head foot-
ball coach for the 2014 season. Bo-
guszewski replaces Dan Spittal
who resigned in April.
I am confident that coach Bo-
guszewski has the energy, passion
and the plan to continue the
proud tradition of Eastern
Viking football. He will be a
strong communicator and leader,
instilling in his players a strong
work ethic and a team first ap-
proach, Smart said in a state-
ment.
A veteran of 14 seasons, Spittal
left Eastern with an 86-61 career
record, directing the Vikings to
the 2003 South Jersey Group IV
title, the only sectional crown in
program history. He served as an
assistant for eight years before
taking the helm.
The Vikings went 10-2 last sea-
son, reaching the South Jersey
Group V championship game
against Cherokee. Boguszewski
admits that Spittal left big shoes
to fill at the school but has been
invaluable in the transition.
Coach Spittal has been a great
resource for me. Ive already
reached out to him a few times so
I could pick his brain, Bo-
guszewski said.
Boguszewski, a South Jersey
native, played football at Over-
brook High School where he cap-
tained the 1998 Group IV State
Championship team. He contin-
ued his playing career at Western
Connecticut University and
Rowan University.
Boguszewski began his coach-
ing career at the high school level
at Paul VI High School during the
2004 season. There, he progressed
from a position coach to coordina-
tor position in 2011.
During the 2012 season, he
coached at Sterling High School
as an assistant, serving as offen-
sive coordinator and running
backs coach. In 2013, he returned
to Paul VI as the offensive line
coach. Having the opportunity to
coach at Eastern has been a goal
for Boguszewski.
Being the head coach at East-
ern is my dream job that Ive al-
ways wanted. It being a regional
school, the community that sur-
rounds it. Its amazing to be
here, Boguszewski said.
His goal since being named
head coach has been creating a
buzz around the team. Bo-
guszewski already reached out to
youth leagues in the area as well
as Eastern alumni hoping to
build excitement for the upcom-
ing season. He first met with the
team last week.
I told them that were going to
do it right, and were going to do
it big. Well be focused on doing
the right things on the field and
in the classroom. Were going to
be student athletes, Boguszews-
ki said. We talked about how im-
portant community involvement
is, how important character is.
We want high character guys.
The message was received.
They were excited, Bo-
guszewski said. Theyre ready to
get to work for sure.

The Sun
To truly excel in any career,
you must make sacrifices. Okx-
ana Cordova-Hoyos is making
quite a sacrifice this summer,
traveling to Tajikistan to partici-
pate in a volunteer effort with
IRODA to raise awareness of
autism spectrum disorder.
I have always loved volunteer-
ing, Cordova-Hoyos said. I vol-
unteered all through high school
at the Voorhees Pediatric facility,
and that cemented my decision to
pursue a career in the medical
field for children.
The program seeks to serve
two purposes, according to Stefan
Cornibert, program director at
Americas Unofficial Ambassa-
dors.
This program is part of a
service learning course at TCNJ,
Cornibert said. We are trying to
give aid to a country that needs it,
while also trying to dispel Ameri-
can stereotypes in the Muslim
world.
Cordova-Hoyos will be in Tajik-
istan for six weeks, where she
will work with children and cre-
ate a website for the IRODA or-
ganization. She will also chroni-
cle her journey in a blog.
During her time in Tajikistan,
she hopes to provide aid to the
children and parents who would
otherwise have no help and to
spread the word about IRODA.
At the ground level, what
IRODA stands for is important,
she said. This is seen even in the
organization's name. IRODA,
while an acronym for Parents of
Children with Autism Initiative,
also means willpower in Tajik.
Cordova-Hoyos expects that
this experience will change her
life forever and hopes she will be
able to impart some of the knowl-
edge she gains on the Voorhees
community.
I will be giving presentations
in Voorhees and at TCNJ when I
return to show that being a Mus-
lim country does not automatical-
ly mean that the country is in-
volved with the Taliban or terror-
ist groups or that they hate Amer-
ica, she said. We are working to
dispel stereotypes on both sides of
the equation.
She also hopes to inspire stu-
dents at Eastern High School to
try new things.
I hope to be an example that
anything can be accomplished
and that its good to get out of
your comfort zone, Cordova-
Hoyos said. If someone had told
me last year that I would be living
in Central Asia this summer, I
would have laughed. Being here
has been so different from any-
thing I've ever done and I'm glad I
decided to do it.
You never learn if everything
is always the same. Being so far
from home also helps to show
yourself that you can do it by
yourself and that you are
stronger than you think.

Students get involved
at science day program
By KYLE CARNEY
The Sun
There were no spouting volca-
noes or tri-fold boards at Signal
Hill Science Day on May 30. In-
stead, students got the chance to
experience presentations from ex-
perts in their fields, covering the
spectrum of scientific principles.
Liz Byham, the coordinator of
the event, put together a program
that would interest students and
get them involved in the sessions,
rather than just listening to them.
We have sessions for each age
group, Byham said. The presen-
ters do their presentations first,
and then the kids have the chance
to do some hands-on learning in
the second half of the sessions.
The sessions included presen-
tations about recycling, the solar
system, nature and even yoga.
Aaron Krause, president, CEO
and inventor of Scrub Daddy, was
one of the many volunteers who
came to present.
I volunteered for the event
because of the passion I have for
invention, which 90 percent of
the time requires a good under-
standing of science and how
things work, Krause said. I
hope my presentation will have a
positive and long-lasting impact
on these young minds and help
foster the next generation of
American inventors and entre-
preneurs.
Another presenter, William
Slaven, manager of engineering
with URS Corporation, shares
Krauses feelings about the im-
portance of the sciences.
The economy has somewhat
stabilized and the engineering
and construction industry is
growing, Slaven said. Helping
to showcase the sciences to ele-
mentary school students hopeful-
ly gives them the interest to ex-
plore and consider a future career
that uses math and science, like
architecture, engineering and
construction.
In the presentations Slaven and
Krause gave, students were able
to participate. Krause sees the op-
portunity to get the students ex-
cited about doing science at such
a young age.
Children at this age are very
curious and, like sponges, soak
up knowledge and can gain a life-
long love of the discipline,
Krause said. This is the time to
feed that curiosity, which in turn
creates a new generation of in-
ventors that I believe are the
backbone of the country.
The Science Day program is di-
verse enough to allow students to
get a glimpse into everything, ac-
cording to Byham.
We have presenters from all
walks of life, Byham said. Its
good for the students to see all the
different ways to use science. The
yoga presentation was particular-
ly a big hit this year.
According to Slaven, the pre-
senters have a responsibility to
pass on their knowledge to the
new generation.
Its important to give back,
Slaven said. Engineering has
done much for me, so in turn, I
must help engineering through
helping others see it as a career
path for them. I know how hard it
is for children and even adults to
figure out what career or degree
to pursue So, early exposure to
any and all jobs is always good
knowledge to have.
