Networks. The 'G is act!all# part o$ .oth the 3G0)*C and the 3G0*G*N accordin- to the
3G *tandards de$initions. The 'G is located .etween the RNC and the other Core Network
nodes. The 'G is desi-ned to provide a hi-hl# availa.le" ro.!st" and scala.le architect!re.
The $le1i.ilit# o$ the s#ste& &akes it eas# to con$i-!re accordin- to each c!sto&er2s network
needs. $ew desi-nations are introd!ced here to $ra&e the disc!ssion o$ en-ineerin- a 'G.
Re-ardless o$ which FPs are placed into a shel$" or how it is con$i-!red" the sa&e so$tware
load is !sed $or all 'ireless Gatewa# shelves e1cept the --re-ation Node +N,. The N
!tili3es a standard Passport load" while all other 'ireless Gatewa# shelves !tili3e the sa&e
'ireless so$tware load.

Chapter 5.1.3: 'ireless Gatewa#
Two shelves can .e $it in one ca.inet. %ach shel$ has 14 slots $or processin- cards. Two t#pes
o$ cards are provisioned in the 'G:
Control processors +CP,
F!nctional processors +FP,: T)" %35/*3" *G*N" and 6*P.
Two slots are reserved $or CP cards and 17 slots availa.le per shel$ $or FP cards. /i$$erent
t#pes o$ FPs can .e &i1ed in the shel$ to achieve opti&al 'G con$i-!ration. The sections
.elow descri.e the $!nctionalit# o$ the di$$erent cards in the 'ireless Gatewa#.
CP cards:
This card is !sed $or shel$ control" s#ste& provisionin-" load stora-e and $or the collection o$
statistics and .illin- records. CP cards have a Gi-a.it %thernet port" which is !sed $or
co&&!nication .etween the 'G and the 8peration and )ana-e&ent *#ste&.
A&' !C(3)*&'(1 Car+s,
These cards are $o!r0port 8C03c5*T)01 $!nction processor availa.le in two $or&ats: sin-le0
&ode or &!lti&ode. This $!nction processor contains $o!r 8C03c d!ple1 *C $i.er optic
transceivers and s!pports one !ser0to0network inter$ace +(NI," or one T) network0to0
network inter$ace +NNI," or one T) Passport0Passport Inter$ace +PPI, $or each port. The FPs
can operate $ro& either side o$ the !ser0network .o!ndar#" and can provide an inter$ace
.etween Passport switches within a private network. %ach 8C035*T)01 T) port s!pports a
line rate o$ 155.59 ).it5s.
This FP s!pports on0card *8N%T P* +!to&atic Protection *witchin-, .etween desi-nated
port pairs on the sa&e FP. 'hen activated" *8N%T P* .rid-es e-ress tra$$ic to .oth ports
and switches in-ress tra$$ic to .e received $ro& one port or the other. This &ethod protects
a-ainst $ail!re o$ the !ser line inter$ace +optical $i.er,.

The card $!nctions are:
For (0Plane P* *ervices the card is !sed $or :55T) switchin- and IP
ro!tin-. The IP $ra&es $ro& the I! inter$ace are ro!ted .# this card to the 8C0
35*T)01 ports that are connected to the Packet Gatewa#.
For (0Plane C* *ervices" the 8C035*T)01card trans&its the :95T) cells to
the 6*P )R card. The 6*P )R card converts $ro& )R +()T* voice
codin- sche&e, to PC) +P*TN voice codin- sche&e,. The 6*P )R card sends
the PC) voice on *tr!ct!red :1 to the : %35/*3 card.
For C0Plane P* and C* services" the 8C035*T)01 card trans&its the *:0
NNI5T) control &essa-es on the I! inter$ace to the 3G *G*N card. The 3G
*G*N card switches the control plane cells to the correspondin- 8C035*T)01
card. In the case o$ C* services the control &essa-es are sent to the T)5I8P in
the )*C thro!-h :55T) cells.
For P* services the control &essa-es are sent to the Packet Gatewa# thro!-h
:55T) cells. I! 8C035*T)01 cards can .e provisioned in 1;1 or N;1
red!ndanc# &ode.
E3)-*3 AA. Car+,
These cards are 7 port channeli3ed %35/*3 cards that convert the PC) voice over str!ct!red
:1 to PC) voice over channeli3ed %3. The channeli3ed %3 links are sent to a
de&!ltiple1er to trans$or& to PC) voice over channeli3ed %1s and $ro& there to the /TCs in
the )*C.
These cards &a# .e provisioned in 1;1 or N;1 red!ndanc# &ode.

The *G*N card s!pports the )o.ilit# )ana-e&ent and *ession )ana-e&ent +Control Plane,
$!nctions $or the Packet *witched *ervices. Fro& c!rrent &eas!re&ents" the 3G *G*N card
capacit# is &e&or# .o!nded" so it will .e independent o$ the si-nalin- tra$$ic &odel. Th!s the

The Passport 15===2s $!ll# d!plicated $a.ric and control processor s#ste& allows $or hitless
so$tware !p-rades and si-ni$icantl# i&proves the overall s#ste& availa.ilit# and $a!lt
tolerance. For tr!nks and hi-h availa.ilit# access lines" the Passport 15=== s!pports optional
*8N%T 1;1 P* on all optical inter$aces. %lectrical inter$aces can .e protected with 1:N
sparin- with less than one0&in!te service restoration.
The Passport 15=== is packa-ed in a $ield proven carrier -rade packa-in-. It is N%?* and
%T*I co&pliant and $eat!res $ra&e and shel$ level alar& indicationsE carrier -rade ca.le
&ana-e&ent and d!al /C power $eeds.
The Passport 15=== &eets the de&ands o$ the Central 8$$ice environ&ent with s!pport $or a
wide ran-e o$ ti&in- alternatives incl!din-: internal" optionall# red!ndant *trat!& 3 clocksE
T1%1 ?IT*5%T*I ti&in- port to an e1ternal ti&in- so!rce" and line ti&in- derived $ro& an#
trans&ission line +s!ch as *8N%T e<!ip&ent,. The Passport 15=== also s!pports

The Char-in- id will ena.le the CGF to correlate and &er-e *G*N and GG*N C/Rs into one
record" or several *G*N C/Rs into one $or roa&ers !sin- their HP:)N GG*N. This
approach relieves the .illin- s#ste& $ro& CP( intensive tasks to correlate the di$$erent
records pertainin- to a session and also red!ces the <!antit# o$ data that has to .e trans$erred
.etween the CGF and the ?illin- *#ste&.
Two CGF servers with red!ndant disks as well as red!ndant paths sho!ld .e installed to avoid
a sin-le point o$ $ail!re. The Flow /ata Collectors can also .e deplo#ed in N;1
con$i-!ration. The 'ireless Gatewa#5*G*N will a!to&aticall# $orward the records to the
secondar# collector in case o$ $ail!re o$ the &ain one !ntil the pri&ar# ret!rns to service.

The 'G application and all o$ its co&ponents are onl# s!pported on the
Passport 15=== prod!ct. The 'G is a &!lti0shel$ application" which &eans that 'G
co&ponents can .e provisioned on &!ltiple Passport 15=== shelves and co&&!nicate and
$!nction as a sin-le lo-ical 'G. Interconnection .etween shelves &!st .e via T). There is
not c!rrentl# a li&it on the n!&.er o$ Passport 15=== shelves $!nctionin- as a sin-le lo-ical
'G.
The 'G is .!ilt !pon the Nortel Networks 15=== Passport prod!ct. Passport is a hi-h0speed
packet switch providin- networkin- services. The 'G is a co&ponent o$ .oth the ()T*
Circ!it and Packet /o&ain Core Networks. The 'G can s!pport a Circ!it onl# ()T*
Network" a Packet onl# ()T* Network" or s!pport .oth conc!rrentl#. The &ain application

In the wireless -atewa# the acco!ntin- &eters are -enerated .# the vario!s F!nction
Processors +Gs/ and GsC cards,. The# are collected .# the CP3 FP card when the call
ter&inates. The records are then stored on the FP .e$ore .ein- sent to the CGF !sin- the GTP2
protocol as well as the *N.1 encodin-" as speci$ied in the 3GPP 39.=15 speci$ications.

Circ!it /o&ain handover is controlled .# the 3G0)*CE there are no speci$ic enhance&ents
re<!ired .# the 'ireless Gatewa#. In the Packet /o&ain" however" the 3G0*G*N is
responsi.le $or all handover proced!res. The 3G0*G*N s!pports
3G09G *G*N handover" and
9G03G *G*N handover.
?oth o$ these handovers are handled as de$ined .# the ()T* speci$ications.
5.1.3.3 Interfaces
The pri&ar# s!pported inter$aces consist o$:
