Kingspan Daylighting Systems
The simplest way to save energy, money and environment
2 Kingspan Daylighting Systems
Introduction
Daylighting is essential for healthy living, it is an established fact
that ample daylight improves a general feeling of health and well-
being in the workforce and improves productivity and safety.
Using as much natural light in buildings as
possible has many advantages over using
articial lights, if its penetration is appropriately
controlled.
Light is not only an amount of energy,
it also provides us with the eans to reveal spaces
and volumes and interact with our environment.

4 Kingspan Daylighting Systems
In a typical building, lighting accounts
for 25-40% of energy consumption!
By allowing more natural light to penetrate
and controlling both its light and heat
components, the nancial savings could be
considerable.
Daylighting cuts energy use and pollution.
Power plants fueled by oil, coal and gas dump
thousands of tons of pollutants into the environ-
ment every day. By cutting demand for energy
production, we cut pollution, too.
Studies have proven daylighting makes
employees more comfortable and productive.
Reduced absenteeism, employee satisfaction
and higher productivity are all bottom line benets
from the use of natural daylighting. An increase
of just 1% in productivity provides enough
nancial savings to a company to pay their entire
energy bill.
In addition to its health and nancial benets,
natural light also provides an almost perfect
white light that has a number of visual benets.
Best of all, natural light is of course, plentiful.
People love natural light. Subconsciously, unknowingly, we seek out sunlit places and enjoy spend-
ing time in natural light. Beyond this desire, however, are some tangible benets to adding natural
daylighting into buildings:
Daylight savings
of roof area (prismatic daylighting) reduces lighting
energy demand by during daylight hours.
5
Let the Sunshine in
and brighten your building
Bright Benets
The primary reason for including wall&rooights
is to provide a bright, naturally lit interior and
reduce the requirement for articial lighting.
Daylight has many advantages over articial
light - not least the fact that it is a completely
free, unlimited natural resource. Whilst articial
light is essential, its provision uses a lot of energy,
so reducing the requirement will dramatically cut
energy use, and the CO
2
emissions which result
from this.
Light panels save energy
and reduce carbon emissions.
Can replace electric lighting 70 to 80%
of the daylight hours while producing
much less heat than electric lighting.
Improve employee morale
Reduce absenteeism
Reduce errors
Improve product quality
Increase productivity
Increase sales in retail stores up to 40%

6 Kingspan Daylighting Systems
Introduction
Every workplace should have suitable and sufcient
lighting, which should, so far as is reasonably prac-
tical, be by natural light. The most effective method
of providing even, consistent daylight, particularly
in large buildings, is through rooights, which are
up to three times more effective than windows
around the perimeter of the building.
Diffused lighting should be used to provide
even light distribution and avoid glare.
Energy savings is the most easily quantiably
of the benets. We found that an economically
optimum toplighting system using skylights saved
35-55% of annual lighting energy while having
a much smaller impact on both heating
and cooling energy consumption.
Lower your energy bills up to 55 % with Kingspan
Hybrid Rooights.

16 Kingspan Daylighting Systems
Introduction
Sustainability is the latest buzzword in not just
the construction industry, but in the wider environ-
ment too. Sustainability however is far from just
being a fad it is a way of living and constructing,
to help preserve the environment in which we live.
There are indeed many ways of acting sustainably,
but one of the easiest and cost efcient ways is to
reduce the energy that we use.
How though, do you reduce the amount
of articial light yet maintain a workable level
of lighting? The answer is to incorporate rooight
systems into roof constructions.
By allowing more natural light in to a building,
the need for articial lighting is reduced.
The benets of using rooights go further than
just reducing our energy consumption; research
has shown that increased levels of daylight can
aid health, learning and also increase productivity.
The Kingspan Polycarb Rooight allows natural
light to penetrate in to the building, therefore
reducing the need for articial lighting.
The rooight system, which is designed for use
with the KS1000 RW system, is made from
polycarbonate, a lightweight, high performance,
durable plastic. It has superior UV resistance and
will not discolour over time coupled with a U-value
of 1.64W/mK.

Recycling
The Kingspan Polycarb Rooight is 100%
recyclable, which means that at the end of its
life, it can be completely recycled unlike many
composite rooights in which only certain
elements can be recycled.
Substantial energy savings can be made
by using waste materials rather than raw materials,
these energy savings can be made from reducing
transportation emissions and the processing
of raw materials.
The amount of material that ends up in landll
is reduced. This not only prolongs the life
of the currently diminishing landll sites but
also reduces the amount of gases released
in to the atmosphere from this process.
Polycarbonate also has a scrap value, potentially
rendering the process of removing and disposing
of the panel at end of life cost neutral/positive.
Therefore using a 100% recyclable polycarbonate
rooight has both economic and environmental
benets.
Kingspan Polycarb Rooights allow natural light
to penetrate in to the building, therefore reducing
the need for articial lighting.
Through recycling, a number
of benets can be achieved.

SUNPIPE
Application
The SUNPIPE is a revolutionary
new way to pipe natural daylight down from rooftop
into the building - to brighten areas from dawn
to dusk where daylight from windows cannot reach.
It is energy free, super reective tube even extends
through adjustable bends and has an internal mirror
nish that intensies and reects natural daylight
delivering free outdoor light to a room or area below
- where the light is evenly diffused by a translucent
ceiling xture. At ceiling level, the diffuser has the
ability to distribute the light in every direction, giving
an even spread of light throughout the room.
Sunpipes are supplied as complete system, with
roof aluminum insulated upstands and applicable
with Kingspan roof insulated panels. Due to the
shape of the Diamond dome, the SUNPIPE is self-
cleaning, since rainwater washes off any dust or dirt
and there are no crevices for dirt to collect.
System Benets
No structural alterations required, easily ts be-
tween joists and rafters.
No maintenance required and will not leak.
Top dome is self-cleaning due to its shape and
eliminates condensation problems.
All SUNPIPE systems are guaranteed for 10
years against faulty manufacture.
Few xings are required, normal single xing at
base of system.
Joints are sealed using aluminium tape.
Reection efciency up to 98 %!
Investment payback 5-6 years.
Applicable with Kingspan roof insulated panels.
A SUNPIPE can be almost any length
that you wish, but loses 6% of light for every
metre of SUNPIPE. For very long SUNPIPEs,
a larger diameter should be used

Application
SUNIZER is absolutely unique structural
element distinguishing mainly for its utilization
purpose and its extremely high efciency.
Its uniqueness consists in using Fresnel lenses
which can affect the nal parameters very
favourably. Fresnel lenses multiply sunbeams
entering the system and then direct them
to the desired place.
Sunizer can be installed into both at
and pitched roofs. Suitable also for low-energy
buildings the closed air column combined
with the thermal insulation around the tube acts
as an excellent insulating material.

Kingspan is a leader in the eld of sustainable development.
Our long-time commitment to the issues of sustainability and energy
efciency is best characterized by the Trias Energetica model,
which promotes three steps towards sustainable energy production:
Reduce use
Use renewables
Be efcient with the remaining resources
2 Maximise the use
of renewable energy
sources
1 Reduce demand
(energy saving)
3 Use fossil fuels
in the cleanest
possible way
ENERGY DEMAND
STEP
ONE
Energy Ef cient Buildings
The implementation of Energy Performance
of Buildings Directive has forced energy efciency
into the design and operation of residential,
commercial and industrial buildings. The EPBD
requires that all buildings are labelled to show
their energy efciency.
With closed-cell, high performance insulation
constituting and integral part of the panel systems,
the IPN-insulated panels provide a particularly thermally
efcient and economic method of constructing walls and
roofs of buildings, and ensure an unrivalled thermal per-
formance throughout the buildings operational lifetime.
The simplest way to reduce energy demand
and assure an A rating for a building is to use
IPN-insulated panel systems.
Testing and eld results show that IPN-insulated
panels - Kingspan core product - contribute
to sustainability and energy efciency in a variety
of ways.
Energy efciency. Insulated panels have a core
of continuous, rigid insulation for industry leading
R- and U-values with superior airtightness
performance, thereby preventing unnecessary
heat transfer.
Recycled and recyclable. The exterior skins
contain a substantial amount of recycled content,
and the panels themselves are recyclable.
Life cycle benets. Insulated panels last as long
as the service life of a typical commercial building,
and continue to provide excellent thermal performance
throughout the buildings operational lifetime, which
is a key requirement for any sustainable solution.

Let the Sunshine in

The development of sources of renewable energy is a crucial part of the strategy
to cut carbon emissions.
One of the key aspects for the success of integrating sources of renewable energy into
construction programmes is the ease with which they can be incorporated into building design.
Kingspan has a number of solutions which meet this criterion, starting with the building envelope itself.
STEP
TWO
Renewable Energy
Kingspan designs, manufactures and supplies approximately
20 million m
2
of insulated roof, wall and faade panels per
annum and works in close conjunction with leading building
investors, owners, developers, designers and construction
teams for the property market.
This capability has enabled us to introduce a range of fully
integrated solar photovoltaic solutions for roofs, walls and
faades from a single, trusted provider, eliminating multi-
sourcing, installation and building envelope integration risks.
Photovoltaic (PV) systems generate clean, ination proof
electricity, reduce energy costs and can generate electricity
to be fed into the national grid or used within the building
itself. Even if the sky is overcast, PV is proven to produce
electricity.
Every kW produced has zero-carbon emissions,
which signicantly reduces the carbon footprint. It limits
dependency on fossil or nuclear fuels and facilitates meeting
corporate social responsibility needs. Such an investment
could increase the saleable / rentable value of the building
and would enhance the buildings energy ratings.
Kingspan EnergiPanel is an innovative insulated solar
air heating system designed for roof and wall applica-
tions as a supplement to the main heating system.
Proled hollows beneath the crowns allow air move-
ment up through the panel and the air is warmed by
the simple process of using the outer steel skin as
a solar energy absorber. The darker the external colour
of the panel the greater the solar absorption.
Because it is a single component system, Kingspan
EnergiPanel allows fast track construction, so the over-
all carbon footprint associated with the instal lation is
minimised. The system integrates seamlessly with other
panel systems from the Kingspan range and is available
in a range of colours.
The Kingspan EnergiPanel combines Kingspans
existing state of the art insulated panel techno-
logy with a tested and proven solar air heating
capability.
The EnergiPanel Solar Air Heating System has
the exibility of being either integrated with the existing
HVAC system or utilised in a standalone heating capac-
ity. It is available with the Kingspan Total Guarantee
covering both the thermal and structural performance.
46 Kingspan Daylighting Systems
The nal step is to be efcient with our remaining resources where fossil fuels have to make up
the shortfall in energy supply, this should be done as cleanly and as sparingly as possible.
The aim of safeguarding the natural resources has led Kingspan to develop a range of solutions that
instead of consuming fossil-depleting energy, capitalize on the most natural of resources sunlight.
STEP
THREE
Reduce demand
The simplest way to save the energy is just to turn off the
lights.
This vision has compelled Kingspan to introduce a range of
products that bring the natural light into the buildings, thus
reducing the need for articial, energy-consuming lighting.

The Kingspan Polycarb Rooight is designed for use with
the KS1000 RW insulated panel system.
Made from polycarbonate a lightweight, high perform-
ance, durable plastic, which will not discolour over time.
Provides excellent light transmission, which makes it
possible to fully exploit the benets of natural light.
Allows for efcient light diffusion, which helps avoid
hot spots and disperse light evenly in sections between
rooights.
The economy of using the Kingspan Polycarb Rooights is
amplied by savings on lifecycle costs once installed, the
rooights do not require spare parts or vigilant maintenance.
The Kingspan Polycarb Rooight is 100% recyclable and has
a scrap value, potentially rendering the process of removing
and disposing of the panel at end of life cost neutral/positive.
Harvesting daylight
We could reduce our demand for electricity by thou-
sands of megawatts just by opening up our buildings to
daylight and the Kingspan Wall-Lite, a translucent wall
panel, does exactly that.
A novel concept in sandwich panel faades, the
Kingspan Wall-Lite presents designers with a freedom
to create energy efcient buildings of distinction. It is
simple to x, light and durable, features superior light
transmission and diffusion combined with excellent
insulation properties.
The Kingspan Wall-Lite provides a brilliant alternative to
traditional vertical daylighting systems. It is suitable for
both horizontal and vertical application on all types of
buildings, and integrates fully with Kingspan Architec-
tural Wall panels, Kingspan Optimo
TM
, and Kingspans
range of complete wall and facade systems.
Fully recyclable, the Kingspan Wall-Lite helps lower
both energy operating costs and CO
2
emissions, whilst
allowing the buildings occupants to enjoy and benet
from high levels of daylight.
Research has shown that increased levels of daylight can
aid health, facilitate learning and increase productivity.

Vision
Energy Ef cient Buildings
The research found that demolition results
in the insulation generally going to landll whether
it be PUR, PIR, rock bre or glass bre. In the light
of this conclusion, Kingspan Insulated Panels continues
to actively explore ways of stimulating the end-of-life
management of its panels, including an on-going
reduction in the environmental footprint of new
products to reduce the future legacy.
