Ayakashi 02: Terms and History

As the show takes place during the Edo period, some terms are fairly hard to equate to modern terms. This .pdf serves as a
guide for these terms, as well as to provide some background information regarding certain aspects of the show.
Haori
Haori is a traditional coat that is worn over a Kimono.

Legend of Oiwa
What Nanboku talks about in his narration is one of the many versions about the legend of Oiwa. In this version, Yotsuya
Samon is a wealthy lord, but he has no male heir to inherit his fortune. His only daughter, Oiwa, contracted smallpox and a
large lump grew near her right eye. Her face became badly scarred and her hair began to fall out. In order for Samon to
retire early, he offered money to a man to marry his daughter and take up his family name. The person who answered that
request was Iemon, a Ronin.
Itou Kihei, in this version, was an ill-mannered Samurai who had two lovers, one of them named Ohana. Ohana was
pregnant with his child, but Kihei wanted to do away with Ohana before the baby was born. At this point, Iemon has been
married to Oiwa for a year, but because he married her for her money, they did not have a good relationship and Iemon
came to hate her because of her ugliness. Kihei came to know about Iemons problem with Oiwa, and they formed a plan.
Oiwa was falsely told that Iemon had started gambling, womanizing, and had accumulated a large debt. Iemon then
started stealing from Oiwas family and due to the constant thefts, Oiwa's family became poor. One day, Kihei visited Oiwa,
and advised her to tell her husband to change his ways.
When Iemon returned, before Oiwa could say anything, Iemon attacked her and left. After that, Oiwa went to Kihei for
advice and Kihei advised her to divorce Iemon. Listening to Kiheis advice, Oiwa divorced Iemon and left the house. Iemon
divorced Oiwa and married Ohana.
Eventually, Oiwa came to know of Kihei and Iemons trickery. Her face turned even uglier in anger, and she ran out of her
house, never to appear again. A few years later, Iemon and Kiheis family start to die due to mysterious reasons and
eventually, every one of them dies.

Ohaguro
Ohaguro, also known as Kane, is a traditional practice, where the teeth are stained with a black dye made of iron shavings
that are melted in vinegar then mixed with powdered gallnuts. Married woman during the Edo period were required to
have their teeth dyed black.

Shinto Wedding
During a traditional Shinto wedding, a priest would chant a Norito (prayer) to god to bless the couple. Since the marriage
between Iemon and Oume was impromptu, Akiyama serves as the witness to the marriage and performs the ceremony.

Namo Amida Butsu
Namo Amida Butsu is the Japanese variant of the Amida Sutra from Buddhism. The usage of the Amida Sutra is to remove
bad karma.
