/e the focus of our first day here2
,nce you6#e )earned ho' to rea)ign

it6s important that you ta"e notes. and

practice 'hat 'e discuss here today
/efore the next session2 A)) the concepts
that you6)) /e )earning are re)ati#e)y
simp)e and easy to understand2 But
you6)) find the /enefits of app)ying them
to extreme)y profound2 !o it6s important
to practice2
To get started. 56d )i"e to c)arify 'hat
/ody energy is2 For our purposes. you
can start off /y thin"ing of /ody energy
as emotions and fee)ings2 But it a)so
inc)udes a p)ethora of other sensations
that you might not yet /e a'are of2 A))
these emotions. fee)ings. and sensations
exist essentia))y as energies 'ithin the
/ody2 We use )anguage to p)ace )a/e)s
on energies 7 )i"e ;happy;. ;sad;. angry.
ner#ous. cra#ing. stressed. anxious. and
many others2 But these are <ust )a/e)s or
sym/o)s of the actua) energies2 For the
=
duration of this course. 56d )i"e you to
thin" of emotions and fee)ings as the
energy or essence under)ying those
'ords2 *sing )a/e)s or 'ords to
sym/o)i4e emotiona) energy is usefu) for
communicating 'ith other peop)e. /ut
you connect 'ith yourse)f /y direct)y
experiencing the pure )a/e)7)ess energies
'ithin2 (our re)ationship 'ith yourse)f
is a unique one. in that you6re the on)y
person 'hose inner 'or)d you can e#ery

"ey to your re)ationship 'ith yourse)f.
and the "ey to your persona) po'er2 3ot
surprising)y then. most of our rea)
trou/)es /egin 'hen 'e )ose connection
'ith our inner energies. usua))y as a
resu)t of a#oidance. distraction.
suppression. or fear2 Peop)e ha#e an
instincti#e tendency to a#oid pain.

'hether physica) or emotiona)2 But on
an emotiona) )e#e). such a#oidance can
/ecome a se)f defeating /eha#ior2 A
mu)ti7/i))ion do))ar pharmaceutica)
industry no' caters to our desire to
a#oid emotiona) discomfort2 But you6re
a/out to )earn that the secret to fee)ing
/etter is to first fee) 'hate#er you fee)2
And this is a s"i)) that fe' ha#e
mastered2 We )i#e on an emotiona)
pendu)um2 Loss. )one)iness. anger. gui)t.
stress. anxiety. fear222 these are some of
the fee)ings that 'e try to a#oid2 But
once these fee)ings enter our experience.
the "ey to mo#ing /eyond them is to go
through them. not to a#oid them2
To i))ustrate the )in" to /ody energy
a#oidance. consider anxiety and stress2
These conditions arise 'hen 'e 'ant to
a#oid some rea) or imagined situation
?
/ecause of a certain emotion or /ody
energy that 'e thin" it 'i)) cause2 E#en
if the 'orry is of something simp)e. )i"e
/eing )ate for an appointment or
performing poor)y on a test. it6s not
actua))y the e#ent itse)f causing the
stress 7 it6s fear of the fee)ing that 'e
associate 'ith the e#ent6s occurrence2
Whether )ogica) or i))ogica). our mind
percei#es these feared possi/i)ities as

possi/i)ity that 'e 'ant to a#oid. that 'e
generate a se)f defeating )e#e) of stress2
Whi)e 'e6d typica))y try to que)) that
stress /y a#oiding or contro))ing the
e#ent in some 'ay. the most direct route
to getting stress and anxiety under

you associate 'ith the e#ent2 ,nce you

And 'e continue using either for the

and a good 'ay to /urn ca)ories. the
'ea" )in" in 'eight management usua))y
comes on the other side of the equation.
in the form of o#ereating2 The tendency
to o#ereat might deri#e from sur#i#a)
instinct. it might come from chi)dhood
messages a/out finishing e#erything on
our p)ates. it might ha#e an emotiona))y
soothing or comforting effect. or it
might come from associating food 'ith

it6s pure hunger. or some menta)

that2 And it6s usua))y this simp)e fact that
causes us to gain 'eight2 5f you can

'hat one person experiences as fear.
