OAKWOOD After its initial year
in business last summer, Auglaize
Canoe and Kayak is looking forward
to giving people the chance to drift
down the Auglaize River this summer.
Doug and Bonnie Weller, who
both retired from careers in sales and
teaching, had the dream for several
years to one day open a kayak busi-
ness. They along with their son,
Troy, his wife, Tammy, and their
three children, Leva, Amelia and
Payton took a giant leap of faith
last year and they have not looked
back.
Housed in the converted barn that
was built by Doug and some of his
FFA friends when they were in high
school, the facility serves as the
check-in point for those who seek
adventure on the Paulding County
waterways.

Feature Story
This is our retirement project.
It is what we do to keep ourselves
young, Doug said.
The livery is open from May 1 to
Oct. 1 and it has been everything the
Wellers had hoped it would be.
To be honest, last year was more
than we expected. But we are taking
it slow and we will add new features
to the facility from time to time. This
year, we will be offering paddle-
boards, Bonnie said.
Those who come out to experience
the water consist of all ages. From
preschool to those in their 80s, people
have enjoyed the variety of the trips
down the river.
Last season we had a group of
five ladies who came out to camp
and then went kayaking the following
day. It was their version of a girls
night out, Bonnie said.
The canoe and kayak facility has
welcomed couples, families, small
groups, as well as church youth
groups, boy scouts, school groups.
EMS/fire departments and law
enforcement groups.
We have had a wide variety of
people attend. We have even had
sports teams from local high schools
who use the facility as a form of team
building, Bonnie said.
Patrons from surrounding counties
have visited the Weller farm and to enjoy
the kayaking and canoeing as well.
We have had people visiting fam-
ily and friends in the area who were
from California and Florida who
came over and enjoyed the view
of the beautiful scenery offered by
canoeing down the Auglaize.
But, at the end of the day, its the
kids who are the best.
Everyone always has a good time.
People get wet and you hear a lot of
laughter when they finish their course
along the river, Doug said.
Auglaize Canoe provides 13 two-
person canoes, 22 two-person sit-
on-top kayaks, 12 twisters or single
kayaks and new this year are paddle-
boards.
We have something very unique
here. There is not much commer-
cialism around the river which adds
to the wide variety of outdoor life.
Often times you can witness eagles,
river otters, geese, ducks, owls, deer,
to name a few, Bonnie said.
The livery sits on the 100-year-
old family farm. It is located two
miles south of Ohio 613 on Paulding
County Road 263 (Paulding-Putnam
County line), then west on Road 207.
Hours of operation are from 9 a.m.-5
p.m. Monday-Saturday and from 1-5
p.m. Sunday.
We are open 6-1/2 days a week.
We are not open on Sunday morning
so our families can attend church,
Bonnie added.

Who am I?
A 130-year-old mystery, can-
nibalism, modern day murders
and even an appearance by Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle the writ-
ing duo of Douglas Preston and
Lincoln Child certainly know
how to pack their most recent
collaboration, White Fire,
full of thrills. This is the pairs
19th novel together and the 13th
book of their FBI Special Agent
Aloysius Pendergast series.
White Fire begins with
an actual meeting between Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle, Oscar
Wilde, and the managing editor
of Lippincotts Magazine, Joseph
Stoddart, in August of 1889. The
gathering was called at the behest
of Stoddart who wanted the men
to pen stories for his magazine.
The result in real life was Doyles
second Sherlock Holmes story,
The Sign of Four, and Wildes
The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Preston and Child take the
facts of the true meeting and stand
them on their heads. During a lull
in conversation in White Fire,
Wilde proceeds to tell Doyle
about a story from his recent
trip to the American West that so
upsets and frightens the doctor, he
becomes ill and the memory of
the tale haunts him until his death.
Fast forward to the present day
and the reader is introduced to
college student Corrie Swanson.
Swanson is attempting to win the
Rosewell Prize for the outstand-
ing thesis at the John Jay College
of Criminal Justice. She decides
upon performing an analysis on
the skeletons of eight miners who
were killed by a grizzly bear in
historic Colorado, research that
could prove invaluable to forensic
laboratories across the country
when victim
remains have
been decimated
by wild ani-
mals. With the
thought of the
prize well with-
in her reach,
Swanson flies
west after leav-
ing a letter for
her benefactor,
Pendergast.
The rela-
tionship between Swanson and
Pendergast is a holdover from
previous books. While the back
story connection between the
two is handled admirably by the
authors, it is helpful to know
Pendergast took Swanson under
his wing and is helping to finance
her college studies. He was drawn
to her because he saw promise in
the very smart but often volatile
young woman who had started
life with a less than ideal child-
hood.
That fiery temperament
soon lands Swanson in trouble
in Colorado. In the course of
just a few days, she manages
to infuriate the matriarch of the
wealthiest family in town and
the de facto community leader.
Swanson loses access to the min-
ers remains and then ends up in
jail. Pendergast rides into town
and with the young womans
help, along with a
long lost Doyle
ma nus c r i pt
written after
the tale from
Wilde, man-
ages to solve
the old mys-
tery as well as
a current series
of sadistic
murders by an
arsonist.
Swanson is
intended to share billing as a co-
protagonist in the novel and the
character does carry her weight
in the action well. She proves
to be resourceful, intelligent and
unafraid - even when her life is
literally put on the line. She has
also been given enough faults
her temper, most noticeably to
make her interesting. It would not
be surprising to see the authors
start a series in the future just
for her.
However, this novel still pri-
marily belongs to Pendergast.
Much like Holmes to Doyle, the
FBI agent
is the ulti-
mate crime
solver for
Preston and
Child. His
unbelievable
intellect about even the most
arcane knowledge and his astute
observational skills certainly are
reminiscent of Holmes while his
idiosyncrasies Southern drawl,
penchant for only the finest of
foods and clothing, and seem-
ing inability to relate to normal
people are more fodder for a
readers appetites.
So while the characters are
intriguing and Preston and Child
pull off the dual writing chores
like a pair of in-sync partners,
White Fire still stumbles as a
story. This reader discovered the
answer to the old mystery before
the halfway point of the book
and did the same with the cur-
rent day murderer/arsonist before
the end as well. Although the tie
between the two sets of crimes
was unknown until Pendergast
revealed it, the authors chose to
gloss over the reason, making the
ending slightly anti-climatic.
White Fire is still a well-
written thriller with characters
that a reader can cheer for to win.
While it may not be the best novel
you read this year, it is a solid
effort that will certainly entertain.

Keeping
it Reel
BY ERIN
COX
Sometimes I just want a character to be evil,
but cursing an innocent baby
to die is a little hard to accept
without an explanation.
Maleficent finally gave me
the reasoning I needed from
the Disney classic Sleeping
Beauty and thats about it.
Besides the stunning
look of Angelina Jolie as
Maleficent, the film lacks the
visual spectacle I was hoping
to see. With the animalistic
look of the evil goddess, I
expected her to come from
a fairyworld with bright colors and beauti-
ful creatures. Instead, the fairyland created on
screen was an earth-centric world with earth
tones. I liked seeing the trees
and roots and everything
come to life but it wasnt
as thrilling as I expected
to see of the world from
which the magically evil
Maleficent came.
Jolie made it easy to
focus on her and remem-
ber this movie is all about
Maleficent. From the high
cheekbones to the top of
her horns to the forceful
gliding of her walk, Jolies
composure throughout the film captivates the
audience and Id rather watch her than see
Aurora frolicking
through the forest.
The three fairy
godmothers are sup-
pose to add a bit of
humor but they really
dont add to the story
at all, which moves at
quite a slow pace anyway. There wasnt enough
to the story to keep me interested.
Maleficent lacks a compelling story-
line with building action and climax. The
most exciting part happens at the beginning
with the reason given for why Maleficent
would curse the newborn Aurora so I
wont give that away so you still have a
reason to see it if you wish.
