An open-web joist can be selected with the aid of the standard load tables (SJI,
1994), one of which is reproduced in Figure 5.40. For each combination of span and joist,
a pair of load values is given. The top number is the total service load capacity in pounds
per foot, and the bottom number is the service live load per foot that will produce a
deflection of 1/3w of the span length. (Although the loads in the tables are service load
capacities, the tables can easily be adapted for use with the LRFD ap proach, which we
demonstrate presently.) The first number in the designation is the nominal depth in
inches. The table also gives the approximate weight in pounds per foot of length. Steel
fabricators who furnish open-web steel joists must certify that a particular joist of a given
designation, such as a IOKI of span length 20 feet, will have a safe load capacity of at
least the value given in the table. Different manufacturers' IOKI joists may have different
member cross sections, but they all must have a nominal depth of 10 inches and, for a span
length of 20 feet, a service load capacity of at least 199 pounds per foot.
The open-web steel joists that are designed to function as floor or roof joists (in
contrast to girders) are available as open-web steel joists (K-series, both standard and
