The door to the world of epic, emotion and creation
September 11th 1714 , El Born quarter was the scene of an epic battle. After
a bloody siege, Barcelona was siezed by the Bourbon troops of Felipe V.
Today Born CC presents this historic heritage, becoming exceptional not only
for its architectural value, but also for what it contains: the archaeological
remains of the neighbourhood destroyed by Felipe V during the War of
Succession. Where once used to be the old Born market, you will now nd
the epicentre of this episode, a symbol of the heroic struggle of the citizens
to defend their freedom. It is a prime archaeological site, which is very well
conserved and is unique in Europe not only for its size (8,000 square meters),
but also for the historical sequence it testies.
The Born Cultural
Centre
One-of-a-kind heritage
site in Europe
Visit this site and take an emotional trip to Barcelona of the XVIII century.
Stroll through the streets, get into some of the houses and admire the
jewellery, china or pipes used by the citizens back in those times. More than
3,000 objects that were discovered during the excavation works are now
displayed in the exhibition Barcelona 1700. From stones to people.
A cultural centre of the XXI century
The Born CC offers visitors a unique journey and the opportunity to enjoy an
extraordinary heritage. You can see a beautiful perspective of the old town
and admire the architectural complex of the old market, a cathedral made of
iron and glass designed in 1873 by Catalan architect Josep Fontser.
Walk around the Born CC and visit its exhibitions, take part in the guided
urban routes around the Centre and the Ribera neighbourhood. Participate
in various cultural events and high quality programs that are offered to the
public every day: concerts, lms, dance shows, theatre, games, and shows. Or
just have a good time tasting the best of Catalan cuisine in the dining space
El 300 del Born or buy books and souvenirs in the shop.
One of the most interesting attractions for visitors coming to Barcelona is
wandering through the heart of the city and getting trapped by one of the
most cosmopolitan neighbourhoods, La Ribera, in the district of El Born.
Take a stroll through the narrow streets and get seduced by the inviting
design, fashion and leisure el Born offers. Wander through the medieval
center among museums, galleries and artisans and discover one of the most
dynamic scenarios in the area, the Born Cultural Centre.

Shopping
in Barcelona
Discover the life of the city while you are shopping
In recent years Barcelona has been hailed as one of the worlds top tourist
destinations where an increasing amount of purchases by visitors is
becoming a signicant attraction.
Citys commerce, supported by large international rms (located in the centre
of the city), as well as new and emerging local proposals (driven in various
neighbourhoods like El Born or Grcia), could transform a shopping day
into a whole incentive to discover the stylish, vanguardist and cool side of
Barcelona.
There are about 35,000 stores, allowing you to discover the life of the city
while youre shopping. The city is a major commercial hub divided into
different areas, some pedestrian, so you could peacefully shop while you
enjoy the ride.
In the area known due to the importance of its brands and stores as Quadrat
dOr (Golden Square) you could admire the modernist Barcelona and all
major international rms (this area is delimited by Aribau street and Passeig
de Sant Joan, and runs along Passeig de Grcia).
9 8
The historical Barcelona also offers many options for shopping, hundreds of
interesting stores are spread along the Ramblas, the quarter of Raval and
Plaza Catalunya. A whole shopping tour to enjoy the most romantic part of
the city scattered with small shops full of personality and totally exclusive
goods.
There are other less touristic but interesting shopping areas like Grcia
quarter. We recommend you to wander around its narrow streets and
squares to discover its typical neighbourhood stores mixed with some
emergent designers shops.
In Glories you will nd the Mercat dels Encants. It is one of the oldest markets
in Europe, which began in the XIV century. Now it is a big ea market with
a very bizarre mixture of items. You could nd: antiques, DVDs, bicycles,
furniture, clothes, tools, home appliances, almost everything. Carelessly
organised in stalls, though recently moved to a super modern construction,
which looks a bit contradictory.
There is even a tourist route called Barcelona Shopping Line that guides
you around the main commercial hubs. Here you will nd various options for
shopping in different areas of the city, from the most popular to the most
classy. More information: http://www.barcelonashoppingline.com/

In Barcelona, you can enjoy tapas and Mediterranean cuisine in more than
5,000 restaurants. You can also have tapas while visiting Barcelona markets:
la Boquera, named Best Market of the World (awarded at the World
Congress of Markets in Washington in 2005), or Santa Caterina (in the Born
district). In any of them you can have breakfast, lunch or dinner and make
your own tapas tour to nd these specialities among some of its most
distinctive bars. The tradition of eating tapas has spread throughout Spain.
The idea was born in the 18th century, when customerswine glasses were
covered by a small plate with some food on it. Do you fancy trying some?
The most typical tapa of Catalunya
Pa amb tomquet, (literally in English: Bread with tomato) is a simple old
recipe from Catalonia, Majorca and Valencia. It is made from toasted slices
of pa de pags (peasants bread), a typical round piece of wheat bread.
Classic Pa amb tomquet consists of toasted bread with garlic rubbed over
its surface, then the same is done with very mature tomatoes, all is nally
seasoned with olive oil and salt. The dish is served with different sorts of
sausages (cured botifarres, xorio, fuet, etc.), ham, cheeses, anchovies or
other marinated sh, or grilled vegetables like escalivada. The origin of this
dish is discussed, as tomato is relatively new to Catalan cuisine (it came
from America only after the 15th century).
