LEVEL EYE
BULLETIN 1100-SB10-01
VALVES VESSELS SYSTEMS CONTROLS SERVICE BULLETIN

System drawings shown in this bulletin are for illustration purposes only. Refrigeration systems should only be serviced by a qualified technician.
Always observe proper safety procedures when servicing a refrigeration system. For more information see the latest revision of Phillips Safety
Bulletin SGRV.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Pressure Rating: 1000 psig/69 bar

Temperature Rating: -60F to 250F
(-51C to 121C)

The H.A. Phillips Level Eye is a reliable, industrial type sight
glass. The reflex lens indicates the true level of the liquid
present without requiring a second lens.

H.A. Phillips offers a wide variety of Level Eye configurations to
accommodate most refrigerant viewing situations. These
configurations are summarized in Table 1 and illustrated in
Figure 1.

APPLICATION NOTES

The Level Eye assemblies are suitable for ASME code vessels
such as receivers, intercoolers, suction accumulators, oil
separators, surge drums and oil pots.

The Series 1100 Level Eyes can also be used in refrigeration
columns or liquid line indicators, and other non-code
applications.

The Level Eye assemblies are suitable for ammonia, R-22 and
other accepted refrigerants.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. To weld: Housing can be welded into a 2 opening
or over a 1-9/16 opening. Remove glass and
gaskets before welding.

2. Verify proper assembly order as shown in exploded
drawing (see the next page).

3. Make sure the lens is installed flat against the
gaskets and all parts are clean and free of debris.

4. Tighten 1102SH retainer to 40 50 ft-lbs torque for
a Buna-N gasket. For a Teflon gasket, torque to 60
70 ft-lbs.

5. When installing the frost shield, a light coating of oil
on the O-ring and/or a soft, non-abrasive, thin
material (e.g., plastic straw, string) held over the O-
ring (allowing air to escape) while inserting will aid
installation. Withdraw thin material if used.
Important: Test for pressure tightness before
inserting frost shield.

SERVICE TIPS

1. In service, do monthly visual inspection of glass.
Replace immediately if any discoloration or physical
damage is found.

2. Do not use any type of metal or sharp object to
remove ice from the sight glass. Always use low
heat to slowly melt the frost.

3. Do not use a metal wire to install the frost shield.

4. When replacing the lens, look for any signs of
damage. If the new lens is damaged, do not use.

5. If the lens is dropped, do not reuse even if there no
visual damage.

6. Do not reuse gaskets. Whenever the glass is
replaced, replace both gaskets.

7. Always make sure the lens is flat against the
gaskets. Improper alignment could result in leaking
or damage to the lens.

8. Remove the lens and gaskets before welding the
housing into place. Keep the retainer in the housing
during welding to help prevent housing distortion
and protect the threads from damage due to welding
sparks.
