2 About Actifio CDS
Actifio CDS 6.0.3 Release Notes
About Actifio CDS
Actifio Copy Data Storage (CDS) is a purpose-built storage system designed to
manage the data protection and availability applications typically handled by siloed
data management point tools including backup, snapshot, disaster recovery, business
continuity, replication, de-duplication, and WAN optimization. Actifio virtualizes
these systems, integrating their common core functions Copy, Store, Move and
Restoreinto a single, fully optimized and efficient storage platform. Actifio
effectively decouples the management of data from its underlying infrastructure, just
as server virtualization does.
About Actifio Sky
Actifio Sky is a virtual appliance that provides many Actifio CDS capabilities in a
package that can be deployed on standard VMware ESX servers. It is designed as a
solution for edge locations with limited production application capacity - either for
enterprises' remote offices/branches or for service providers who have smaller
customers. A Sky virtual appliance must be joined with a physical CDS cluster though
replication can be bi-directional.

System Requirements for Actifio Sky
You need enough virtual storage for Actifio Sky: a 401GB LUN for the Primary
Pool and a 1.01TB LUN for the Dedup Pool.
You need the latest .OVA file from Actifio Support.
Deployment and Installation
Your Actifio field representative will help you in deploying the solution in your
environment.
Note: Actifio CDS requires DNS to be properly configured during the
installation process.
Important Instructions
On AIX host with Fibre Channel adapters configured in both in-band and out-of-band
configurations, to prevent long failover times when multiple paths are configured,
Actifio recommends you to change the default values of FC adapter attributes 'fast fail'
and 'dynamic tracking'.
1. To set the Fibre Channel SCSI I/O Controller Protocol Device event error
recovery policy to fast_fail for each Fibre Channel adapter.
#chdev -l fscsi0 -a fc_err_recov=fast_fail
2. To enable dynamic tracking for Fibre Channel device.
#chdev -l fscsi0 -a dyntrk=yes
Known Issues 7
Actifio CDS 6.0.3 Release Notes
Known Issues
Actifio CDS
Windows Server 2012 iSCSI initiator is not supported and its use might crash both
Actifio CDS nodes. [7969] Therefore:
- Windows Server 2012 on a physical server is supported only with Fibre Channel.
- Windows Server 2012 on a virtual server is supported with storage provided by
the ESX server over either Fibre Channel or iSCSI, as long as the iSCSI initiator
is not turned on in the guest OS.
During in-band restoration, the backup disk replaces the production disk, and new
data since the backup is lost. During out-of-band restoration, the backup data
replaces the same production data, but new data since the backup is ignored.
[10298]
Seed-In and Seed-Out operations launch sub-jobs to perform the data copying.
You may see a Success job status before the sub-job has finished successfully.
[13495]
Do not cancel a Seed-In or Seed-Out job. Aborting the operation causes the
sub-job to go into a loop that can only be stopped with help from Actifio Support.
[13494]
Workaround: Run #udstask seedout <image name or appid>to learn the jobid.
Then run udsinfo lsjobs to see if <jobid>is still running.
Seed-In and Seed-Out jobs can take a maximum of 9 objects per job. [13459]
Workaround: Run multiple jobs.
Spurious error message 724: If you run #sainfo lsservicestatus | grep err and see
error code 724 (indicating a bad network connection), it may be spurious. [8574]
Workaround: Verify connectivity, then run #udstask clearerrlog to clear the error
log.
Discovery of clustered applications (such as SQL Server and Microsoft
Exchange) on Virtual Machines with Windows OS may add cluster nodes as
physical hosts instead of VMs. In this case, backup of the discovered application
may fail. It may also result in backup staging disk getting mapped directly to VM
over iSCSI. [11234]
Workaround: To protect clustered applications within VMs, discover all cluster
nodes as VMs first and then discover applications on those VMs.
When using the Report Manager in the Actifio Desktop, reports cannot be
generated in CSV, Excel, and RichText format. [7644]
Workaround: Connect to the Report Server User Console (https://<IP address of
Report Server>), select the output type and run the report. The report output will
be downloaded to your computer.
Cannot open new session of Actifio Desktop after closing the Desktop in some
circumstances. If you open multiple instances of the Actifio Desktop and if you
8 Known Issues
Actifio CDS 6.0.3 Release Notes
close the most recent Desktop first and if you closed the window rather than exit
the Desktop from the Desktop menu, then you cannot open a new instance of the
Actifio Desktop. [8056]
Workaround: Close the process from the Task Manager. For best results when
using multiple Actifio Desktops, close each session from the Desktop menu.
In some situations when a Virtual Machine that is under protection is severely
damaged, as for example:
- one or more hard disks are accidentally deleted
- one or more data stores containing the disk are corrupted
- a virtual hardware component such as a memory controller was compromised
In some of these situations, a restore from a CDS backup may not work.
Alternatively, the restore from the CDS backup may complete, but the Virtual
Machine may still not boot.
This situation may also occur if the protected Virtual Machine was being restored,
and the restored was canceled or failed when a datastore went off-line or some
other reason.
In such a situation, delete the protected VM entirely, and then perform a clone
operation from the VDP backup. A clone operation does not depend on an existing
VM, and will not be affected by the previously damaged VM.
There are some differences between a cloned VM and the original VM in terms of
network and USB device configurations that you will need to adjust after the
clone operation completes. [3322]
Unix hosts only: The \act\mnt folder is reserved for Actifio CDS. Applications
stored in \act\mnt will not be discovered. [10291]
LUN expansion process fails if there are any existing snapshots. It also breaks the
mirroring operations. [4991]
Workaround: Do not proceed with the LUN expansion if there are any existing
snapshots or delete all the snapshots before proceeding with LUN expansion.
Do not use the CLI to Unmap disks belonging to a mounted image. If you do, you
will not be able to unmount the image. [2966]
Snapshot on a VMware virtual machine configured as shared cluster fails. [3481]
Description: Snapshot creation on VMware virtual machine fails with shared disk
(VMDK shared between two or more VMs for cluster configuration).
No Workaround: This particular use case is not supported by VMware.
(CLI only) In some cases, an upgrade from the CLI may appear to fail with a
socket recv failed error at the command line and in psrv.log. [7523]
Description: This is a communication error only; the install succeeds normally.
No Workaround: This error can be safely ignored.
Due to a known bug in RHEL 5, out-of-band application backups may result in
kernel panic intermittently. This behavior is also noticed when performing in-band
mount and clone operations. [5253]
Known Issues 9
Actifio CDS 6.0.3 Release Notes
Workaround: Upgrade RHEL version from 5.x to 6.1 or higher.
After completion of Windows Virtual Machine backup jobs, you may notice
windows system log events with event id 57 and 137. [6783]
Workaround: This is a known issue with VMware tools.
The scheduler is triggering jobs based on the last executed (scheduled or
on-demand) job for a policy instead of triggering with respect to latest scheduled
job. [7874]
Some warning messages are seen on the console during the patch upgrade process
(when upgrading from Actifio CDS 5.0.3 to Actifio CDS 6.0). [8066]
Workaround: You can safely ignore these messages.
While restoring files from a mounted image, the file browse window displays
incorrect folder size (always 1 Kb). [4393]
Workaround: Ignore safely as the content sizes of the folder shows correctly.
Mounting a backup image to a RHEL 5.x/SLES 10 VM fails to scan for new SCSI
controller/LUNs on the PCI bus. [8226]
Workaround: In order to scan for new SCSI controller, RHEL 5.x/SLES 10 VM
must be running the latest VMware tools on the VM. The VMware tools provide a
way to rescan the PCI bus of the mounted VM, so that the LUNs attached to the
SCSI controller can be discovered.
Monthly garbage collection (GC) schedule runs 24 hours earlier than the
scheduled date. [8306]
Description: If the GC policy is configured to run monthly using the Actifio
Desktop, it runs 24 hours earlier than the scheduled date. This issue is noticed
only with Actifio Desktop for GC settings and specific to Monthly re-occurrence.
Workaround: Use the Command Line Interface (CLI) to set the GC policy
settings, use udstask setgcschedule command.
Unable to add HP-UX host with QLogic HBA using Fibre Channel connectivity.
[9270]
Workaround 1: Force-create the host object with the correct WWPNs.
Workaround 2: Assign a vDisk to the host and rescan on the HP-UX host to
verify the LUN visibility. Use lsfabric command to verify node visibility.
If Actifio CDS is deployed in an environment containing IBM SVC, it is possible
for the IBM SVC and Actifio CDS to see each other as candidate nodes, but the
addnode operation always fails. The node(s) may stay in adding state forever.
[10211,10469]
Workaround: Use rmnode to remove the other node.
When performing a Microsoft Exchange database restore, the restore operation is
successful, but some log error messages are noticed in the event viewer, these are
just like warning messages. [9948]
Workaround: Safely ignore these messages.
10 Known Issues
Actifio CDS 6.0.3 Release Notes
The snapshot operation fails with an error message [UDSAgent: backup failed
with VSS snapshot freeze timeout] if any Microsoft SQL database with Double
byte characters in the name. [8761]
Workaround: None.
Dedup-Async operation fails whenever the associated resource profile is changed.
[10582]
Workaround: Un-protect and re-protect the application using modified resource
profile.
The svctask mksyslogserver command does not work with Actifio CDS. [12095]
Workaround: None.
Email notifications to non-IP address based email server fails on a CLU node.
[12139]
Workaround: None.
LiveClone of a DedupAsync image fails with error When attaching a live clone,
the parent must be a flashcopy, when a LiveClone operation is performed after a
failed DedupAsync job. [12286]
Workaround: Wait until another successful dedupasync job completes, and
perform a LiveClone operation.
When fetching MDisk details of an image mode VDisk from All VDisks tab, all
MDisk details within the MDisk group are displayed instead of displaying a
specific MDisk information. This issue is specific to Actifio CDS GUI only.
[12339]
Workaround: None.
The iSCSI test operation is not supported on Microsoft Windows 2012. [12363]
Workaround: None.
(Out-of-Band backups only) Applications backed up from AIX or Linux hosts in
Actifio CDS 6.0.2 or 6.0.3 cannot be mounted back to hosts with an earlier
version of the Actifio Connector. The mount will appear to succeed, but the mount
point cannot be discovered. This affects applications discovered by the 6.0.2 or
6.0.3 Connector, or applications that grew in size after that Connector was
installed. The backup created by the 6.0.2 or 6.0.3 Connector is built on top of a
Logical Volume Group, which earlier versions of the connector do not support.
Applications backed up from HP-UX hosts in Actifio CDS 6.0.3 cannot be
mounted back to hosts with a 6.0.2 or earlier version of the Actifio Connector.
Applications backed up with an older connector can be successfully mounted to a
host with an Actifio CDS 6.0.2 or 6.0.3 Connector.
On IBM AIX 5.3 pSeries platform (Technology levels <TL12), Actifio connector
may fail to start the services and throws the following error: [12681]
exec(): 0509-036 Cannot load program /act/bin/udsagent because of the following
errors:
0509-130 Symbol resolution failed for /usr/lib/libc.a(posix_aio.o)
Workaround:
Limitations and Restrictions 11
Actifio CDS 6.0.3 Release Notes
Perform the following steps to start the Actifio Connector services:
a. Check whether the bos.rte.aio fileset is installed on the host:
#lslpp l bos.rte.aio
b. Configure posix_aio0 device:
#cfgmgr l posix_aio0
c. Change the autoconfig attribute to available state:
#chdev l posix_aio0 P a autoconfig=available
d. Ensure that posix_aio0 is in available state:
#lsdev C l posix_aio0
posix_aio0 Available Posix Asynchronous I/O
Actifio Sky user interface does not display remote applications if the Sky instance
is configured as a remote target using Actifio CDS. [12761]
Actifio CDS does not support in-band Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) file system.
[13132]
Replicated consistency group from v6.0.3 to earlier versions of CDS is not
supported in Actifio Desktop GUI. [13358]
Workaround: Upgrade to v6.0.3 to allow the remote consistency group to be
available in the Actifio Desktop.
Actifio Sky
Actifio Sky can be used for backup of applications from the Actifio CDS Dedup
pool, but they do not appear in the Sky interface because the Sky interface
displays only VMs. [12761]
Limitations and Restrictions
The following are the limitations and restrictions in Actifio CDS Release 6.0.2
Installation of Actifio Desktop requires Adobe Air Player to be pre-installed. A
separate link is provided on the Actifio Desktop home page, reachable by a
browser at https://<cluster IP address>. [5382]
MS-SQL Server application restore using SQL VSS Writer. [7726]
When a consistency group is configured with both MS-SQL and other-type of
applications (File System, Exchange etc.), then the restore is performed without
using the MS-SQL Server VSS Writer.
If the consistency group is configured only with MS-SQL server databases, then
the restore is performed using the VSS Writer.
Actifio recommends not combining MS-SQL Server databases and other
applications such as File System or Exchange database in a consistency group.
12 Resolved Issues
Actifio CDS 6.0.3 Release Notes
Actifio Connector fails to auto-configure iSCSI ports of the Third Party ISCSI
initiator on Windows. [7784]
Square brackets ([ ]) or forward slash (/) in the datastore name are not
supported.[8872]
The enhanced scripts introduced in 6.0 release are not supported for In-band
Dedup Async jobs. [10220]
Actifio CDS is not supported for the backup operation, if Oracle database started
using pfile from a non-default location. [12698]
Actifio CDS does not support in-band CSV file system applications. [13132]
Limitation in LDAP usage with Actifio CDS:
Support of referral by default feature is ignored. However, you can optionally turn
on this feature by changing the ldap.referral.support parameter value to true.
For Active Directory, the Domain Users group is not supported in this release. It
does not appear in the list of mappings.
HPUX 11.23 considerations
HPUX PV Links on 11.23 will only allow 8 paths per volume group. Due to this
restriction, it is important that the SAN zoning is configured to have no more than
8 paths per staging LUN and\or in-band disks. For best results, have separate
zones configured for the Host-to-CDS and CDS-to-Storage.
Resolved Issues
The following issues are resolved in Actifio CDS 6.0.3 release.
In rare cases after the failure of a CDS node, CDS may fail to restart properly. If
the front panel of the cluster shows no errors, contact Support. [12405]
Snapshot operation of generic application fails when VDisk name is changed.
[10626]
While deploying the OVA during installation, vCenter permits you to enter a static
IP address, but the static IP address is not honored. Ignore that page and get the
assigned IP address from the VM console after the VM has been deployed.
[11316]
After the OVA has been deployed, open the installer from
http://<IP address>/installer [10926]
When you first connect to the Actifio Sky Desktop, you are not shown the
Dashboard. You can select any Desktop service from the buttons at the bottom of
the screen. [11500]
