Segment:a line with two end points
zebra crossing, bicycle spoke are all segments
Ray or Half line: extend a segment innitely on one direction
ash light, sunlight are half lines
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 6 Bilingual Math Graph and its position 3 / 16
Line: extend a segment on both direction
There is no end points for a line
Questions:think and try
how many lines can you draw from one point?
how many lines can you draw from two points?
how many nails do you need to x a stick?
Two points determine a line
From one point, there are innitely many lines; From two points, there is
only one line
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 6 Bilingual Math Graph and its position 4 / 16
Example
1
use two ways to describe the two lines
2
give one example to show that two points determine a line
3
how many lines can you totally draw from three points?

Distance of two points: distance of the segment between the two
points
Among all curves connecting two points, segment is the shortest one.
Use ruler and compasses to compare the length of two segments
Use a ruler to measure the segment length and compare the values
Move them to the same line to compare
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 6 Bilingual Math Graph and its position 6 / 16
Exercise
(1) Which segment is the longest/shortest?
(2) A,B and C are three points in order on line l, AC=4cm, BC=3 cm. If
point O is the middle point of segment AC. Find the length of
segment OB.
(3) Use a compasses to compare the segment AB and AC, AB and BC

Angles in real life
Can you give more examples of angles in your daily life?
Angle:graph formed by two half lines with a common end point
Vertex: the common end point of this two half lines
ABC: angle ABC
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 6 Bilingual Math Graph and its position 8 / 16
Exercise (Use correct way to express the angles)
Protractor: tool to measure the size of angles
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 6 Bilingual Math Graph and its position 9 / 16
Two special angles:at/right angle
1 Degree(1

):
1
180
of at angle(180

)
1 minute(1):
1
60
of 1 degree
1 second(1):
1
60
of 1 minute
Calculation
(1) 1.45 degree= minutes= seconds
(2) 1800 seconds= minutes= degrees

Dierent angles
Acute angle: 0

< < 90

Right angle: = 90

Obtuse angle: 90

< < 180

Flat angle: = 180

Angular bisector:a ray from the vertex of the angle

this ray will split the angle into two equal angles. As in the graph,
BOD = AOD
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 6 Bilingual Math Graph and its position 11 / 16
1. As in the graph, AOC and BOD are both right angle. If
DOC = 28

, nd the size of angleAOB

2. As in the graph, BAC = 90

, B = 45

, AD is the angular bisector

of BAC, nd all pairs of angles which are equal.

Parallel lines: on the same plane, two lines never meet
If line AB is parallel to line CD, we label AB CD.
If line l is parallel to line m, we label l m.
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 6 Bilingual Math Graph and its position 13 / 16
Try and think
(1) through point C, you can draw how many lines which is parallel to line
AB
(2) through point D, draw a line which is parallel to line AB. Is this line
parallel to the line you get from (1)?
Through one point outside a line, you can get only one parallel line
If two lines are both parallel to the third line, these two lines are
parallel
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 6 Bilingual Math Graph and its position 14 / 16
Vertical/Perpenticular: if the angle between two lines is 90

, then
they are vertical/perpendicular to each each
If AB is perpendicular to CD, we denote AB CD. The intersection
point O is the foot of perpendicular.
Try:draw a line which is vertical to line l from point A/C
On a plane, through one point, you can only get one vertical line to a given
line
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 6 Bilingual Math Graph and its position 15 / 16
Vertical/Perpendiculr line segment:PO
The line segment between given point and the foot of perpendicular.
Perpendicular line segment is the shortest
Among all segments connecting a outside point and a point on a line, the
perpendicular line segment is the shortest one.
As in the graph, PO is the shortest one.
