Algebraic expression
an expression built up from constants, variables, and a nite number of
algebraic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and
exponentiation)
4+3(x-1), x+x+(x+1), a+b, ab, 2(m+n),
s
t
, a

are all algebraic
expression.
Example
The price for entering a garden is: 10 for each adult, 5 for each child
(1) there are x adults and y children in a tour group, how much should
they pay for the entrance fee?
(2) if they have 37 adults and 15 children, how much should they pay?

Exercise (use algebraic expression to express all the followings)
(1) Dans running speed is x m/s and his walking speed is y m/s, then
the distance is after he ran 10 seconds and walked 5 seconds.
(2) the units digits of a number is a and the tens digit is b, then the value
of this number is .
(3) the summation of a and its one fourth equals to .
(4) a classroom have 2 gates and 4 windows, if our school has n
classrooms, then totally our school has gates and
windows.
