CitectSCADAPocketprovidesamobile,wirelessinterfacetoCitectHMI/
SCADAandCitectFacilities.DesignedtorunonahandheldPocketPC,it
enablesoperatorstomoveawayfromthecontrolroomandtendtodutieswithin
aplantorfactory,safeintheknowledgetheycanmonitortheSCADAsystem,be
alertedtoanyalarms,andrespondifrequired.
BeingacomplementarytooltoaCitectHMI/SCADAsystem,CitectSCADA
Pocketisdesignedtofocusonthecurrentplantstatus.Inviewofthis,youcan
readandwritevariabletagvalues,viewandacknowledgecurrentalarms,and
trenduptofourvariabletags.Configurationcapabilitieshaveintentionallybeen
kepttoaminimum,andCitectSCADAgraphicspagesarenotaccessible.
OncecommunicationhasbeenestablishedwiththehostCitectHMI/SCADA
system,anadministratorcandownloadalistoftheavailabletagsandselectto
displaythosethatanoperatorwillberequiredtomonitor.Different
combinationsoftrendsandvariablescanbesavedasFavourites,givingthe
operatoreasyaccesstotheinformationtheyrequire.

CommunicationbetweenthePocketPCandtheCitectHMI/SCADAsystem
takesplaceviaaWebService.Thisallowstheinformationsenttoandfromthe
PocketPCtobeHTMLbased,offeringahighlevelofflexibilitywiththe
transmissionmethodused(forexample,WirelessLANorGPRS).
Tofacilitatethis,therequiredarchitectureincludesaCitectSCADAPocket
ServerwithMicrosoftsWebServicesoftwareinstalled:IIS(InternetInformation
Services).ThePocketServercanbeanycomputer,aslongasitsharesthesame
networkdomainastheCitectSCADAsystemyouwouldliketoextract
informationfrom.
TheclientsoftwarerequiredbythePocketPCisinstalledseparately.

SecurityismanagedforCitectSCADAPocketviapasswordprotectedlogins.
Twotypeofloginsareused:
Administrator

OperateslocallytothePocketPCunitandcontrolstheconfigurationofthe
connectiontoCitect,thesamplefrequencyofthedevice,timeoutsettings,
andtheread/writecapabilityofthetagsviewedbyanoperator.
Operator
IsdefinedwithintheCitectHMI/SCADAproject.
WhenCitectSCADAPocketisstartedforthefirsttime,aloginscreenappears
withtheusernameAdministratorkeyedin.Theuserispromptedtoselectand
verifyapasswordfortheAdministratoraccount.Onsubsequentlogins,onlythe
passwordisrequired.OncetheAdministratorisloggedin,theyaretakentothe
Settingspage.ThisiswherethelinktotheCitectSCADAPocketServeris
configured.SeethetopicConfiguringtheconnectiontoCitectHMI/SCADAfor
moreinformation.
Note:TheAdministratoraccountcannotbeusedtoconnecttotheCitectSCADA
system,asthisrequiresverificationfromwithintheruntimeproject.For

TheCitectSCADAPocketServerisaWebservicethatmanagescommunication
betweenCitectHMI/SCADAandthePocketPCunit(s).Itcanbelocatedonthe
CitectHMI/SCADAServeryouwouldliketoextractinformationfrom,orany
computerthatsharesthesamenetworkdomain.
TherearetwostepsrequiredtosetupaCitectSCADAPocketServer:
1 InstallMicrosoftInternetInformationServices(IIS).

ThecomputeryouchooseasyourPocketServermustberunningMicrosoft
IIS,acomponentoftheWindowsoperatingsystem.TocheckifIISis
installed,youcanlaunchInternetExplorerandtypeLocalhostintothe
addressbar.IfthelocalmachinehastheIISWebServiceinstalled,apage
willdisplayinformingyouthatitiscurrentlyrunning.Ifyouareredirected
toanyotherpage(forexample,youareredirectedtoaMicrosoftsearch
engine),youwillhavetoinstallIIS.Todothis,gototheStartmenu,and
selectSettings|ControlPanel|Add/RemovePrograms.SelecttheAdd/
RemoveWindowsComponentsicon,andlocatethelistingforInternet
InformationServices(IIS).SelecttheIISboxandworkyourwaythroughthe
WindowsComponentWizard.
Note:IfyouneedtoinstallIISonacomputer,ensurethecomputerdoesnot
haveMicrosofts.NETframeworkpreviouslyinstalled.Problemsmayoccur
ifyouinstallIISover.NET,however,theseproblemsdonotoccurifIIS
installedfirst.
2 InstalltheCitectSCADAPocketServersoftware.
PlacetheCitectSCADAProductOptionsinstallationCDintothecomputer
youwouldliketosetupasaCitectSCADAPocketServer,andrunthe
InstallationWizard.SelecttoinstallCitectSCADAPocketServer.
Note:YoucanselecttoinstalltheCitectSCADAPocketClientatthesame
timeasthePocketServer.However,thedestinationPocketPCmustbe
dockedtotheservermachinefortheinstallationtotakeplacesuccessfully.
OncethePocketServersoftwarehasbeeninstalledonthehostcomputer,you
canmoveontoinstallingtheclientsoftware,asanyfurtherconfigurationtakes
placeonthePocketPC.

InstallingtheclientsoftwareonthePocketPCinvolvestwosteps:
1 ConnectthePocketPCdevicetoacomputerviaitsdockingstation.
IfyouareyettosetuptheCitectSCADAPocketServer,youmaywantto
dockthePocketPCunittotheservercomputer,asthiswillallowyouto
installthesoftwareforbothatthesametime.
2 InstalltheCitectSCADAPocketClientsoftware.
LoadtheCitectSCADAProductOptionsCDintothePocketPCshost
computerandruntheInstallationWizard.SelectCitectSCADAPocket
Clientfromtheinstallationoptions,andworkyourwaythroughsteps
presentedbytheWizard.Theinstallerwillinformyouofanyproblems
communicatingwiththePocketPC.
Oncetheinstallationprocessiscomplete,aCitectSCADAPocketiconshould
appearonthePocketPCsProgramspage.Youcanusethisicontolaunch
CitectSCADA Pocket 8
CitectSCADAPocketandthenprogresstoConfiguringtheconnectionto
CitectSCADA.
Configuring the

CitectSCADA
ToconfiguretheconnectiontoCitectSCADA,youneedtologinto
CitectSCADAPocketasanAdministrator.(Seethetopiconsecurityforan
explanationoftheadministratoraccount.)Youthenneedtoidentifythe
CitectSCADAPocketServeryoudliketoextractdatafrom.
1 LoginasanAdministrator.
IfyouareusingCitectSCADAPocketforthefirsttime,youwillbe
promptedtodefineandverifyapasswordfortheAdministratoraccount.
2 GototheSettingspage.
3 IdentifytheCitectSCADAPocketServer.
IntheServerfield,typeintheIPAddressorcomputernameofthemachine
youhavesetupastheCitectSCADAPocketServer.SeePreparingthe
CitectSCADAPocketServerifyouhavenotalreadysetuptherequiredWeb
Service.
4 SettheSampleRatefrequencyfortheconnectiontothePocketServer.This
setsthelengthoftimebetweeneachautomaticrefreshofthePocketPC
display.NoteyouhavetoswitchCitectSCADAPockettoStartmodeto
initiateautomaticrefresh(seeNotebelow).Otherwise,thedatawillonlybe
updatedwhenyouselectGetValuesfromtheServermenu.
5 SettheWebMethodCallTimeout.Thisfieldindicatestheamountoftime
youwouldexpectittotakeforaresponsetobereturnedfromthePocket
Server,basedontheestimatednetworkspeed.Thedefaultis20seconds.Ifa
responseisnotreceivedwithinthistime,anewrequestwillbesent.
6 SettheServerDownTimeout.IfthePocketPCcannotcontactthePocket
Server,itwillstopmakingrequestsaftertheperiodoftimesetinthisfield.
Note:YoucanstopandstarttheconnectiontotheCitectSCADAPocket
ServerviatheServermenu.Bydefault,theconnectionissettoStop.Toinitiate
automateddataupdates,youneedtogototheServermenuandselectStart.If
youdonotrequireCitectSCADApockettomakerequestsforalarmdata,you
alsohavetheoptiontoDisableAlarmsontheSettingspage.
YouwillnowneedtodownloadthelistofrequiredtagsfromtheCitectSCADA
projecttothePocketPC.
Downloading tags to the
Pocket PC
ToviewcurrentinformationfromtheCitectSCADAruntimesystem,youneed
todownloadalistofthetagsyouwouldliketomonitor/controlontothePocket
PC.ThisistypicallyachievedbygoingtotheServermenuonthePocketPCand
selectingDownload.ThiswillcreatealistoftagsstoredonthePocketPCasan
XMLfile.

However,beforeyouattemptadownload,youneedtoconsiderwhichtagsyou
wouldliketotransferandtheimpactthiswillhaveonperformance.We
recommendyouhavelessthan500tagsonyourPocketPC.Ifyourequiremore
than5000tags,theeasiestwaytoloadthetagsonthePocketPCistomanually
createtheXMLfile.Thisavoidsalengthydownloadtime,improves
performance,andincreasesusabilitybyallowingyoutocreateasubsetofthe
runtimetagstoonlythoserequiredbytheoperatorusingthePocketPC.
TomanuallycreatethetaglistasanXMLfile:
1 LocatetheCitectSCADAPocketXMLtaglistincludedasapartoftheCit
ectSCADAExampleproject(C:ProgramFiles/Citect/CitectSCADA/User/
Example/PocketPCExample.XML).
2 OpenthefileinasimpletexteditorsuchasMicrosoftNotepad.
3 EdittheXMLfilereplacingthelistedtagswiththenamesofthosefromyour
CitectSCADAruntimeproject.
4 SavethefilebacktothePocketPCasConfig.XMLinthedirectoryMy
Device/MyDocuments.
OncethislistofrequiredtagsarelocatedonthePocketPC,youcanloginasan
Operatorandloadthisfile.
Logging in as an
Operator
TologintoCitectSCADAPocketasanoperator,youneedverificationfromthe
CitectHMI/SCADAprojectyouaretryingtoconnectto.Todothis:
1 ObtainacurrentoperatorloginandpasswordfromyourCitectHMI/
SCADAadministrator.
2 YouthenhavetogototheLoginpage.Thisappearswhenyoustartup
CitectSCADAPocket,oryoucanselectLoginfromtheFilemenu.
3 KeyintheusernameandpasswordandclickOK.
OnceyouareloggedinasanOperator,youcan:

PerhapsthemostimportantfunctionalityofferedbyCitectSCADAPocketisits
abilitytonotifyanoperatorofanyalarmconditionswithintheCitectsystem.It
doesthisbyprovidinganaudiblealertonthePocketPCsspeaker,andupdating
thecurrentalarmdisplaytoprovidedetails.LocatedontheAlarmtab,thispage
displaysallalarmsinthefollowingstates:

Thefieldsdisplayedforeachalarmincludethenameofthealarmtag,a
descriptionofthealarm,thealarmstatus,thealarmtype,andthetimethealarm
triggered.
Whenanalarmsounds,youcanimmediatelysilenceitbyclickingonthe
Acknowledgebutton.However,thealarmwillstillrequireproper
acknowledgementtoremoveitfromthelistofcurrentalarms.Todothis:
1 ClickontheAlarmtab.
2 Scrollverticallydownthelistofalarmsandlocateanycurrentalarms.
3 Selectacurrentalarm,thenclickontheAcknowledgebutton.
Onceanalarmisacknowledged,thedisplaywillrefreshandtheacknowledged
alarmwillberemovedfromthelist.
Note:Youcanstopthenotificationofalarmsfromaparticularalarmcategoryif
theyareanuisanceandirrelevanttotheoperator.Todothis,gototheSettings
tabandlocatetheExcludeAlarmCategoriesfield.Thealarmcategoriesyou
wouldliketoexcludecanbekeyedinascommaseparatedvalues(forexample:
4,5,6,2124,4856).
IfyoudonotwantCitectSCADAPockettorequestanyalarmdata,youhavethe
optiontoDisableAlarmsontheSettingspage.
Youcanalsosetalimitonthenumberofcurrentalarmsthatappearonthe
Alarmspage.Bydefault,amaximumoftenalarmscanappearsimultaneously.If
youwouldliketochangethislimit,gototheSettingstabandadjusttheMax
NumberofAlarmsfield.
Configuring and
viewing tag variables
TheVariablespageallowsthelistoftagsdownloadedtothePocketPCtobe
arrangedanddisplayedinadirectorystructureappropriatetotheneedsofthe
operator.Thepanetothetopofthepageiswherethedirectoryappears,
displayedasahierarchyoffolderswithselectedtagsincluded.Thepanebelow
displaysinformationabouttheitemcurrentlyselectedabove:ifitisafolder,it
willlisttheincludedtagsandanysubdirectories;ifitisatag,itwillshowits
nameandcurrentvalueorstate.
TheVariablespageissetupundertheadministratorloginandsavedasapartof
theconfigurationfile.Theoperatorcanaddtagstoanyofthedirectoriescreated
bytheadministrator,buttheywillbereadonly.
TocreateafolderbaseddirectorystructureontheVariablespage:
1 LoginasAdministratorandgototheVariablespage.
2 Pointandholdthepenonthetoppaneofthepageuntilamenuappears.
Thismenuallowsyoutoadd,editordeleteitemswithinthedirectory
structure.

3 SelectNewtoaddanitemtotherootdirectoryinthiscaseafolder.This
willtakeyoutotheDeviceControlpage.
4 GivethefolderaNameandselectOK.IfatagisnotselectedontheDevice
Controlpage,theapplicationpresumesafolderisrequired.
Tocreateafolderwithinthisfolderasasubdirectory,simplyselectthe
parentfolderandrepeattheprocessofselectingNewandgivingthe
subdirectoryaName.Toaddasecondfoldertotherootdirectory,youwill
firstlyhavetochooseDeselectfromtheclickandholdmenu,thencallup
themenuagainandselectNew.Thiswillcreateafolderalongsidethefirst,
notwithinit.
Onceyouhavecreatedadirectorystructure,youcanbeginpopulatingitwith
therequiredtags.Notethatthefollowingstepscanbeperformedbyeitherthe
AdministratororanOperator.
Toaddatagtoyourdirectorystructure:
1 Selectthefolderyouwouldliketoaddatagto,thenpointandholdyour
penwithinthedirectorypanel.SelectNewfromthemenuthatappearstogo
totheDeviceControlpage.
2 ClickontheTagfield;adropdownlistofthetagscurrentlyloadedonthe
PocketPCwillappear.Selecttherequiredtagfromthislist.
3 GivethetagaName.Thisishowthetagwillbeidentifiedwhendisplayed
ontheVariablespage.Typicallyyouwouldusetheactualnameofthetag,
however,youcanuseanamethatismoreintuitivetotheoperatorif
required.
4 Youthenneedtoindicateifthetagisadigitaltagorananalogtagby
selectingtheappropriateradiobutton.Notethatifyouareaddingadigital
tag,youcanselectthetextthatisdisplayedforthetagstrueandfalsestates.
IntheDisplayValuefield,youcankeyinthewordthatrepresentsthetrue
stateforthedigitaltagnexttothegreencheckmark,suchasonoropen,
andyoucansetthetextforthefalsestatenexttotheredcross,forexample,
offorclosed.
5 ClickOKtoaddthetagtoselectedfolder.Repeattheprocessuntilallthe
requiredtagsareadded.
Note:YoucanadjustthesizeofthedirectorypanebyselectingMaximise,
MinimiseorRestorefromthepointandholdmenu.Maximiseincreasesthe
directorypanetofullscreensize,Minimisereducesit,andRestorereturnsitto
itsdefaultsize.
Atthispointyouwillneedtodecideifthereareanytagsanoperatorwillneed
towriteto.Ifthisisthecase,theAdministratormustconfigurethiscapability
intothestructureoftheVariablespage.SeeMakingatagwriteable.

CitectSCADAPocketcanbeconfiguredtoallowanoperatortousethePocket
PCtowritetoatagwithintheCitectSCADAproject.Thisisenabledbythe
AdministratorduringtheprocessofsettinguptheVariablespage.
Forexample,youmaywanttogiveanoperatortheabilitytoswitchPump1on
oroff.YouwouldfirstlyneedtoplaceatagwithintheVariablesdirectorythat
allowsthecurrentstatusofthepumptobeviewed.Forexample,youcould
placethedigitaltagPump1_STATUSinafoldernamedPumps.Youcould
evensimplifytheinterfacebychangingthenametojustPump1,andapplying
thetextonandofftothetrueandfalsedisplayvalues(seeConfiguringand
viewingvariabletags).
Tothenallowtheoperatortocontrolthepump,youneedtoprovidewriteaccess
tothecommandtagthatswitchesthepumponandoff;thiscouldbethetag
Pump1_CMD,where1isonand0isoff.Itisimportanttonoteherethatthe
tagthatmonitorsthepumpisdifferenttothecommandtagthatcontrolsthe
pump,however,forthepurposesofmonitoringandcontrollingapumpfroma
PocketPC,thetwoarebestdefinedasasingleentitywithintheVariables
directory.
Forthisreason,theDeviceControlpageisrequiredtoallowyoutodefinewrite
accesstoadifferenttagtotheonebeingmonitoredwithinthedirectory
structure.
Tomakeatagwriteable:
1 Locateandselectthetagthatyouwouldliketheoperatortomanipulate.In
theexampleabove,thiswouldbethetagPump1inthePumpsfolder.
2 ClickandholdyourpenwithinthedirectorypaneandselectEditfromthe
menuthatappears.ThiswilltakeyoutotheDeviceControlpageforthe
currentlyselectedtag.
3 LocatetotheWriteValueToTagfield.Usethedropdownlisttoselectthe
commandtagthatcontrolsthestateofthetagbeingmonitored.Ifitisa
digitaltag,youwillhavetoincludeatagandrelevantvaluefortruestate
(markedbythegreentick)andfalsestate(markedbytheredcross).For
example,youwouldplacePump1_CMDwithavalueof1inthetruestate,
andPump1_CMDwithavalueof0inthefalsestate.
4 ClickOK.
WhenanoperatorlogsinandviewstheconfiguredtagontheVariablespage,
theywillnowhavetheabilitytochangeitsvalue.Ifthetagisanalog,the
operatorwillbeabletotypeinanewvalue(withintheconfinesofthetags
range).Ifthetagisdigital,radiobuttonswillappearallowingatrueorfalsestate
tobeselected.

TheTrendstaballowsanoperatortoviewatimebased,graphical
representationofuptofourCitectSCADAvariables.Thedisplayisdynamic,
withthepresentedchartupdatedatascanratesetbytheadministrator.
Toselectthetagsdisplayedasatrend:
1 GototheTrendstab.Thedisplayshouldautomaticallybescrollingtothe
leftinsynchwiththescanratesetbytheAdministrator.
2 Gotothefirstselectionfieldbelowthedisplaywindow,flaggedbya
colouredboxtotheleft.Thearrowtotherightofthisfieldcallsupadrop
downlistofavailabletags.Scrollthroughthislistandselecttherequired
tag.Alternatively,youcantaponthefieldtwicetoselectit,usethekeypad
tojumpstraighttothetagsbeginningwithaparticularletter,andthenselect
fromthelist.
Onceaselectionhasbeenmade,thedisplaywillstartmappingthecurrentvalue
fortheselectedtag.Notethatthetrendpenmatchesthecolouroftheboxinthe
selectionfield.
Ifrequired,repeattheabovestepsforeachoftheremainingselectionfields.
Oncetherequiredtagshavebeenselected,youwillnoticethatasmallgreen
triangleappearsinthecornerofthecolouredboxforthecurrentlyselectedpen.
Theverticalaxisofthegraphwillautoscaletothemaximumandminimum

Using Favorites
FavoritesareavailableontheTrendandVariabledisplays.Theyallowtheuser
tosaveacurrentconfigurationofCitectSCADAPocketdisplayforeasyaccessat
alaterdate.
Favoritesarememoryresident.Tosaveone,simplyselectSavefromthefile
menuandNametheFavoriteleavingtheNamefieldblankisnotaccepted.It
canthenbereloadedfromtheFavoritefieldontheTrendorVariabledisplay
pagebyselectingtherelevantfavouritenamefromthedropdownlistthat
appears.
Favoritescanbecreatedbyanadministrator,orbyanoperator.Ifthe
AdministratorcreatestheFavorite,thenitcannotbedeletedbyanoperator.If
theoperatorcreatesafavourite,theycanalsodeleteit.

Localising the interface
TheCitectSCADAPocketClienthastheabilitytodisplayitsmenus,buttons,
tabsandtextlabelsinavarietyoflanguages.
Tolocalisetheinterfacesothatitdisplaysaparticularlanguage:
1 GototheSettingstabandlocatetheLanguagefield.
2 Selectthelanguageyouwouldliketousefromthedropdownmenutothe
rightofthefield.Thelanguageyouselectwillbeimplementedstraight
away.
Ifthereisaparticularlanguageyouwouldliketousethatisnotincludedinthe
defaultlist,youalsohavetheoptiontotranslatetherequiredcontentandadda
languagetotheavailableoptions.Thisisachievedbymanuallyeditingthe.XML
filethatdefinesthetextusedontheinterfaceandthelanguageoptions.Todo
this:
1 LocatethefilecalledLanguage.XMLonthePocketPCunderthedirectory
MyDevice/ProgramFiles/PocketSCADA.
2 CopythisfiletoadirectoryonthehostPCandopenitinanappropriate
editorforexample,NotepadorFrontPage.
3 Copythecontentincludedbetweenthe<English></English>tags(including
thetagsthemselves),andpasteitdirectlyaftertheclosing</English>tag.
Makesurethecontentiswithintheclosing</language>tag.
4 Changethecopied<English></English>tagstothenameofthelanguage
youwouldliketouse,andtranslateallthecontentthatappearsbetween
identifyingtags.Forexample:

Saving the current
configuration
YoucansavethePocketclientscurrentconfigurationsettingsasan.XMLfilefor
retrievalatalaterdate.Thismayproveusefulif,forexample,anumberof
CitectSCADAoperatorsuseacommonPocketPCfordifferentpurposes.Each
operatorcouldsavetheirSCADAPocketsettingswhentheyhandoverthe
device,andthenpickupexactlywheretheyleftoffbysimplyreloadingtheir
savedconfigurationwhenthedeviceisreturnedtothem.

TheinformationsavedincludesthePocketServerconnectionsettings,the
currentlyselectedtrendsandvariabletags,thelistofdownloadedtags,any
