the things & bu%$ but -ust or the un o it! ,o 1 #as pleased to read that shopping is actuall%
good or %our brain! When scientists measured activit% in the brains o shoppers$ the% ound
a lot o activit% in the important bac( part o the brain in the t#o)and)a)hal seconds that it
too( them lo choose a product! &n other #ords$ it ires up the part o the brain used in ma(ing

+ravelling regularl% in :urope and ;orth America or m% #or( means that & spend relativel%
little time at home! +here*s a lot o hard #or( involved$ but one o the compensations o m%
-ob is sta%ing in ive)star hotels #here the urnishings are cool and modern and the
bathroom*s out o this #orld! 7ut %ou can get tired o all that! ,o #hen it came to m% o#n

#asn*t that & missed it! but 1 did #onder i & #ould be able to aord to cat some#here li(e

+he irst three %ears #ere ver% isolating! 7ut as m% #ie and & got used to the lie$ #e
became ver% interested in the countr%side and gre# to love it! & (no# nothing about
gardening and gro#ing things$ so taught m%sel b% reading boo(s! & no longer have to #aste
lime on commuting or long business lunches$ but m% business onl% brings in about t#o)
thirds o #hat 1 earned in m% previous salar%! 7ut then #e don*t need so much mone% to live
on! 3ur heaviest e'penses are the t#o cars$ because #e are so remote! 1 gro# all our o#n
ruit and vegetables and #e rear chic(ens to eat! We*re about => per cent sel)suicient in
summer!

+he cit% had been m% lie! & #or(ed or a public) relations compan% #hich specialised in art
e'hibitions and so m% evenings #ere devoted to social events! +hen #ithout #arning$ & #as
made redundant! +hat made me stop and reconsider mv priorities! & realised & #as read% or a
simpler$ more en-o%able lie and decided that #ith computers$ a'es and email & could #or(
rom home$ and didn*t even need to be near 6ondon! ;o# &*ve got t#o children and so & can
t #or( ull time$ but &*m doing some mar(et research or a local hotel! &*ve no regrets; it*s a

shouldn*t ind the same level o motivation!

those eelings came bac( to me! &t #as so une'pected$ and & realised that a part o me #as
coming out in the painting! &t reduced me to tears!

inal programme! +he idea #as that m% paintings #ould be sho#n in a galler% alongside lots

all part o the idea o the television programme! An%#a%$ & #as airl%
determined to prove that & could do it! &!ots o people #ere surprised #hen three out o our

e'perience$ but & didn*t li(e cit% lie$ so eventuall% & decided to go home and set up m% o#n

D/ Well$ & began #or(ing in a corner o an old actor%! 3ther cratsmen used the rest o the
building$ so it #as relativel% cheap! Actuall% &*ve spent m% entire adult lie #or(ing on m%
o#n in little rooms! & had a garden shed at one point$ then a little oice behind a shop$ and
m% current #or(shop is in a converted stable! iM% #or(space is made up o hundreds o little
dra#ers and each piece o e5uipment has its place ) so it*s not as untid% as it might appear!

D/ Hood e%esight$ sensitive hands and a lot o patience are essential! Cepairing a #oman*s

because the% #ere on good bus routes! &t #as onl% ater &*d moved in that & realised ho#

commuter route into the cit% centre! 7ut actuall%$ & bought it rom a riend$ #ho introduced

a problem! & li(ed the idea o being close to such nice people so & decided that$ although &*d
have li(ed bigger rooms$ it #as probabl% a good bu%! &t #as onl% later that
discovered ho# good the local shops are and that the bloc( itsel is #ell)maintained b%
the securit% guard #ho lives on the ground loor!

actuall% &*ve had no trouble using the space$ and the other residents turned out to be reall%

DC/ What are %ou most loo(ing or#ard to about the light. H/ +here*ll be so man%
e'periences in those ten da%s that it*s hard to (no# #hich #ill be the greatest moment! 7ut &
guess the launch is #hat &*m loo(ing or#ard to most! +here can*t be man% 6hings as
e'hilarating as being in a roc(et as it lies out o the atmosphere! +he irst e'perience o
#eightlessness and seeing the :arth rom outside the atmosphere/ those are going to be
incredible too$ but mavbe not 5uite so thrilling!

H/ 1 #ouldn*t be human i & didn*t! 7ecause &*m not a militar% pilot or even a proessional
test pilot B this isn*t something & do ever% da%$ %ou (no#! 7ut &*ve done months o training
alongside real astronauts$ so & hope &*m up to the challenge!
DC/ Will %ou have speciic responsibilities on the light. H/ Ker% much so! +he spaceship is
e'tremel% small and so ever% scat has a set o controls in ront o it! &*ll be handling the
s%stems that are controlled rom the right)hand seat/ or e'ample$ radio$ +K$ and some o the
navigation s%stems! +he light commander sits in the centre and can ta(e over rom me on
those unctions i necessar%$ but hopeull% &*ll be a ull%) unctioning member o the cre#!

H/ ,ome o the survival training$ %ou (no#$ #hen #e*re prepared or an une'pected landing
in the sea or in an e'treme #inter climate$ has been ph%sicall% ver% challenging! Much #orse
than the training or #eightlessness$ although that #as prett% tough too!
DC/ ,ome people are completel% against the idea o tourists going into space! 0o %ou see this
trip as a holida%.
H/ Actuall%$ 1 see it ver% much as a lie e'perience!
Deople use the term 1space tourism* to describe #hat &*m going to do! but actuall% it*s a bit
misleading!
&*ve been training lat)out or t#elve months and &*ll be #or(ing lat)out ever% da% that &*m
up there! ,o &*m going to need a real holida% #hen & come bac(!

H/ &*ll be loo(ing at dierent #a%s o measuring the energ% an astronaut uses during a space
light$ and ho# that aects the muscles! 7ut the astronauts all tell me that the one thing the%
#ished the%*d had more o up there is ree time! ,o &*m going to ma(e) sure that & have
some$ at least!
DC/ And #hat advice do %ou have or other people #ho anc% a trip into space.
H/ Well$ the price is a bit steep at the moment #hich cuts a lot o people out$ and then %ou*ve
got to go through months o training! & mean$ not ever%one*s up to that$ ph%sicall%$ nor can
the% spare the time$ and it can be rustrating or people! 1 mean! & #as ortunate because i
%ou don*t ma(e it through the training$ basicall% the% don*t let %ou go!

rec(on it*s going to be sooner than people thin(! &*m conident that #ith so man% companies

it might cost$ but &*m conident that #ithin ten %ears! &*ll be able to bu% a tic(et and l% up
there again #ithout having to go through such a complicated training procedure!
