Part II: Annas Illnesses

Illnesses Effect
on System (if
applicable)

Diabetes Sickle Cell
Anemia
Heart Disease Urinary Tract
Infection
Cardiovascular -High Lipids
-High Blood
Pressure
This caused her
cardiovascular
system to
deteriorate faster
because her
blood vessels
began to stiffen
up. Another
thing that
happened to
Anna with
stiffened blood
vessels was the
buildup of plaque
With Anna
having sickle
cell anemia it
caused her
main tissues
and muscles
in the body to
recieve less
oxygen
Having Heart
disease
caused Anna
to have
blockages in
her main
coronary
ateries which
caused a lack
of blood flow
to certain
areas in her
body
None
Digestive With Anna having
Gastroparesis
she endured
many stomach
problems that
caused damage
to nerves such as
Bilirubin
gallstones -
sickle cells die
in 20 days;
liver breaks
down the
bilirubin; extra
Having Heart
disease
caused fluid
retention
affecting the
liver and some
parts of the

the vagus which
was caused from
her high blood
sugar
bilirubin can
become a
gallstone in the
gallbladder

(bilirubin forms
bile)

abdomen
Immune Diabetes for Anna
caused for insulin
not to be
recognized
because the
receptor sites
were not
working. This
caused her to
receive no insulin
from the
pancreas
With the
sickling of
Annas red
blood cells it
causes a
major
problem for
blood flow
and will
decrease the
amount of
oxygen,
immune cells
and platelets
that get to the
rest of her
body
Heart disease
can be at an
increased risk
if your immune
system is weak
because if
your immune
system is weak
your heart will
be weak as
well

Increased
production of
lymphocytes (B
& T cells) and
antibodies
against the
bacteria;
Inflammatory
response (may
increase
additional UTI
and/or damage
to urinary tract
structures.
Nervous In the nervous
system Anna had
Diabetic
Neuropathy
which can cause
numbness, pain
and tingling in all
parts of the body.
Silent
cerebral
infarcts occur
as well as a
more frequent
risk for
strokes
None None
Respiratory -Shortness of
Breath because
less oxygen is
getting to her
entire body
-Also difficult to
breathe because
the blood vessels
in her lungs stop
the process of
working
Anna having
acute chest
syndrome
with this her
cellular
resperation
decreases

-Shortness of
breath
-dyspnea can -
Heart
disease can
make it more
difficult to
breathe
None

Urinary When there is
more glucose in
the blood than
needed the liver
will filter it out so
that you will
excrete whatever
your body
doesn't need
through urine

None None -Painful
urination
-Frequent
urination
-Small
amounts of
urine
