Welcome to Get Active
WHY GET ACTIVE?
GET ACTIVE is the creation of Jim Bush and Steve Roelle, two Tri-State residents that are involved in the local event, ftness,
triathlon, and health scene.

We were tired of hearing about studies labeling us as the most obese area in the county. We were well aware of the numerous
groups, races, open spaces, and places to enjoy a fulflling active lifestyle. Our region has all the resources, but the problem is
that the information about these resources currently resides in hundreds if not thousands of separate locations.

Our frst goal with Get Active was to put
all of this information in one place and get
that information to everyone who needs it.
Our second goal was FREE. It needed to be
both free the public and free to be listed and
included inside.

We want to thank all of the advertisers who
believe in being active. Tose ads are what
allow this guide to be free and distributed.

Finally we want to thank all of the people who
provided articles, photos, and help along the
way. We could not have done it without you.

If you have an event or listing let us know and
we will make sure it is included in the next
issue. We strive to improve each and every
issue.
Stay Active -
Jim Bush & Steve Roelle

Get Active 2014 Spring/Summer www.GetActiveGuide.com
1. Not Enough Time
I
n a 2012 survey, the average American spent 2.8 hours watching
television and 45 minutes of socializing per day. Many use these
facets to wind down or deal with the stress of life. What if I told
you that exercising, especially in the morning, can physically and
psychologically set you up for less stressful day? Studies show that
if we exercise in the morning, many hormones are set up to help us
throughout the day. Tese endorphins can help us increase our sense
of well-being, put us in a better mood because more of the happy
hormones are released and that combination has been shown to
make us more likely to eat better. We tend to value ourselves more,
which leads to less self-destructive behaviors and even helps curb food
cravings. It also increases our alertness and provides for
better sleep. It was found in an April, 2013 study that 9
million Americans use prescription sleep aids. If you stop
and think about this, if you keep the body at minimal
activity most of the day, it has rested so much that day
that its need for sleep decreases. Our bodies are built to
be in motion most of the day. Another reason for sleep
deprivation is anxiety and stress. Te hormones released
during exercise helps to decrease cortisol levels (stress
hormones) that notoriously high in Americans and is a
big culprit in our problem with high blood pressure. So,
set your alarm to wake up an hour early to get that body
in motion so it can begin to prepare for the day-physically,
psychologically and mentally. Also, by exercising in the
morning, your metabolism is being set up to burn much
more efectively throughout the day. So, that means, fring up that oven
in the morning creates a lingering fame that can help burn of those
calories.
When it comes to healthy eating, many complain that they dont have
time to fx healthy meals. One of the best appliances you can invest
$20-30 in is a crockpot. On busy days, you just throw it all in there and
forget about it. To save even more time, spend an 1-2 on the weekend,
prepping meals for the week. Most fruits and vegetables need little or
no preparation. Just get them washed, cut, and bagged up, ready to go.
Studies show that the closer that the food is to its natural state, the more
nutritious it is. Also, many good for you meats, like chicken or fsh
can be made quickly. It only takes 7-10 minutes to broil a nice salmon
or 10-15 minutes to grill or pan sear a juicy chicken breast. Tere are
many websites, cookbooks and Pinterest has a ton of healthy crockpot
meals that you mix, place in large resalable bags to refrigerate or freeze
for the upcoming week. When you do cook, double the recipe to take
for lunches for the week. A couple of hours of meal planning and prep
can save you so much time in trying to fnd something healthy to eat (so
many will fall into the pit of convenience foods at this point), can lead
to increased snacking and fnally ordering out.

2. Too Expensive
F
irst, lets talk about how much more youre
already spending that you may not be
aware of. Since the majority of us, 2/3 of
the population or 70% of Americans are at
least 20lbs overweight, these costs pertain
to you too. Not just the obese. We spend
3.4 billion million more on gas for our autos
(938 million gallons) per year to transport
our heavier selves. Airline industry spends at
least 1 billion (350 million gallons) more for
their increased gasoline cost to fy our heavier
bodies around. So, as we complain about the cost of gasoline, let us
remember these statistics. You will also see your cost of prescription
105% higher than someone who maintains a normal weight. Tere is an
additional 190 billion dollars added medical costs spent on overweight
Americans every year. You pay those co-pays and out-of-pocket costs.
Tey will continue to rise as long as the majority of Americans ft this
20+lb profle. We simply cant sustain this expense. More insurances

Your Guide to an Active Lifestyle in the Tri-State 5
are giving discounts for those who have a normal weight, exercise
regularly and do not participate in risky behaviors such as smoking,
etc. Some insurance companies or businesses even assist in paying
for gym memberships. Many companies already have workout rooms
set-up and are free for employees. You dont have to go out and buy the
newest gadget or trendy equipment. A good pair of shoes for walking
or running will do just fne. Also, there are many free smart apps
that can help with monitoring your daily calorie or exercise intake. A
Harvard study found that it only cost $1.50 more per day to eat healthy.
Tat is less than what many of us spend on those fancy cofee drinks or
that Coke out of the soda machine. If we really sat down and looked
at our budgets, we would realize how much we spend on stuf that has
little or no long term beneft. Health is an investment that pays out,
not only in short term dividends, but long-term in ourselves and our
families. We spend an additional 14.3 billion dollars to pay for our
childrens own obesity epidemic. So, how can we feed our families
good food on a budget? Check
out those grocery store sales
and build your weekly meals
around what is on sale. Try
to buy fruits and vegetables
in season. Buy frozen when
fresh isnt available. Fix and
freeze lefovers for your own
convenience foods. Did you
know that healthy food is
cheaper when you look at per
serving? Chips are more expensive per serving than carrots and you get
no nutritional beneft, while carrots gives you tons along with fber to
fll you up. Tats why it takes almost the whole bag to fll you up. Be
careful with coupons. Most of these are for convenience or processed
foods, so dont get caught up in the 50 cents you save on that box meal
when you know it is cheaper, healthier and more satisfying when you
fx it yourself. So, plan your shopping trips then your meals.
3. Spouses and Children
W
hen we live with other people, we have some considerations
to take into, but not to use as an excuse. Women, especially,
will say that they cant exercise because of the lack of childcare. Tis
is where we have to get creative. Make deals with family and friends.
Ofer to watch their kids in exchange for them to watch yours. Most
of the time, having other kids over allows for them to have some
social time that they enjoy also. Also, many exercise facilities ofers
childwatch for free or a minimal fee. Also, plan active dates with your
kiddos. Take them to the zoo, play in a park and while theyre in the
sandbox, jump rope or do some push-ups. Tey will get a kick out
of you playing also and makes for a more memorable experience
for all. Get the stroller out and go on scheduled walks. Te fresh air
can help kiddos settle down for a nap, decrease irritability and is free
entertainment for them as they take in their surroundings. Tey will
like it when you speed up a bit and pretend its a ride. Doing exercise
in front of your kids sets an example of a healthy lifestyle that can
afect what choices they make. Children whose parents do almost
no physical activity increases their risk of being unft by 50%. When
surveyed, 2/3 of children said that their parents were not active. Tis
can speak volumes. Studies show that children learn behaviors most
through observation than speech. So, do as you say, because they are
watching and will take cues
from you on what they believe
is good choices. Did you
also know that family meals
increase bonding, decrease
anxieties and can prevent
eating disorders? Te more
that the family comes together
to enjoy a healthy meal, the
more benefts it serves the
family. Also, relationships
between spouses can be afected positively through a healthy lifestyle.
Couples who engage in regular exercise are 43% more likely to stick
with it as compared to only 6% who go at it alone. So, getting that
spouse on board can do you both good. It also helps in relationship
building if done together. Couples report decreased anxiety, increased
problem-solving capabilities and increased feelings of attractiveness.
So, it can add a spark that may be missing.
When it comes to healthy eating, many will complain that my kids
wont eat this or my spouse wont eat it. Some suggestions are to begin
to wean them of of the junk. Gradually change the food options they
have and when theyre hungry, they will only have good things to
choose from. Ask your spouse or kids to help with meal planning. It
gives them more options and empowers them to be a bigger part of
what should be a family lifestyle change. Make the food look good.

You know when you see the vegetable or fruit trays in the store, they
look so much more appealing. So, make your own. Have a plate of
cut-up fruit or veggies that looks pretty. Also, set them out while
youre making dinner and you would be surprised how many times
they walk by and grab a carrot or grape. Many websites and smart apps
have healthy recipes along with reviews. Tis can help in knowing that
the majority of the people who tried it, liked it. Tis can save time,
money and frustration when the family snubs your new recipe. So,
in the beginning, pick popular recipes until you get a feel for cooking
healthy meals and know what your family likes.
4. Boredom
O
ne of the main reasons why so many end up quitting exercise
routines is boredom. Tey get tired of doing the same routine
and many times will reach a plateau on weight loss also if they dont
advance it. So, make sure that if your goal is weight loss, that you
increase the challenge of it every 2-4 weeks.
Your body only changes when it is adapt-
ing to a stressor. So, by exercising, you are
telling your body that the muscles have to
get stronger, heart and lungs have to be
capable of using oxygen more efectively
and your mind will begin to crave exer-
cise for its hormone stabilizing abilities to
keep your spirits up and stress down. So,
one way to do this is mix up your routines
or try diferent classes. Many times, you
can try a class for free to see if you like it
before paying. Also, look at fun activities
like bowling, swimming or dancing. An-
other avenue is the variety of Wii or X-box
programs like Zumba, Wii Fit or other videos. Tese do require more
willpower to make sure you do them instead of cleaning the house or
reading that good book on your nightstand. Another way to increase
your compliance while making it fun is to use that social time with
others as active times. Grab a friend or coworker and hit the pave-
ment. Go for a run afer work or meet at the gym for a good, sweaty
time together. We all feel good when we can hang out with friends
and talk, so just do it another way that is benefcial to both. What bet-
ter way to show that you care about that other person than to help get
them moving, reaching their goals and supporting them on a health
seeking journey. Another fun thing to do is sign up for charity walks
and races. You are more motivated if you have something to train
for. Also, many races are becoming more of a festival like event. You
can do color runs, obstacle races or even adventure races with whole
families.
5. I Dont Know How
W
ith 72 million Americans on some kind of diet and 40 billion
dollars spent on diet products per year, we know that some of
us are really trying. Te problem is that we listen to the commercials
about how this pill or powder will help you lose weight without having
to exercise or this exercise will burn of so many calories that you can
still eat whatever you want. Lets stop fooling ourselves. Te science
is simple. You must burn of more calories than you take in. Te
problem is that our food choices are so poor that it is easy to take in
so many calories without getting
full because our American diets
are so lacking in nutrients and
fber, but full of fats and sugars.
Tat combined with our lack of
exercise is a recipe for the pounds
to continually pack on. We have
to put an end to this cycle, but
how? First, talk to your physician.
He/she already knows that youre
overweight, so its no secret here.
He/she is a reliable and safe frst
step in fnding out where to start.
He can refer you to a dietician that
can begin to teach you healthy
eating habits. Tis is especially important if you have diseases such
as diabetes. Tere are also certifed nutritionist out there that can
assist if you do not have complications such as diabetes that can help
with meal planning. You want to make sure that who you talk to is
educated in nutrition and not just a diet product. Studies continually
show that eating whole foods that have been minimally processed in
the right proportions along with healthy snacking is the way to long-
term weight loss. Many diet products sold will get you quick weight
loss, but the majority of the time, within a year, they have gained it
COVER STORY
Your Guide to an Active Lifestyle in the Tri-State 7
all back and then some. Our bodies are not meant to be fed artifcial
foods that mimic nutrients that can only be properly utilized in real
food. Even if the product contains minerals and nutrients, there are
no scientifc studies showing their absorption rates, health benefts
and that they promote healthy, prolonged weight loss. It is time to
quit fooling ourselves. We know what we should be doing, but are not
doing it. It is time to start taking responsibility for our health. We
have more tools now than ever. You can sign up for weekly meal plans
that can be delivered to you via email or text that can help you learn to
prepare meals. You can join your local YMCA where staf is trained in
exercise knowledge and safety. If you need that accountability or more
guidance in what kind of exercise to do, hire a certifed personal trainer.
Making sure that they are certifed is important because he/she has been
educated in exercise, safety and has the knowledge to help you stay on
track, while preventing injuries. You can join running groups, other
exercise groups or create your own with family, friends or coworkers
who share in the same goal of getting ft and healthy. Share recipes,
ideas, childwatch duties so others can exercise and most importantly,
you gain that support group that can get you through the rough patches.
You also share in accountability. It is a lot easier to get up early and
meet that person for a workout than going at it alone. Sign-up for apps
like Fitness Pal that help you keep track of calories and even has a social
network of friends so others can cheer you on. Te most important is
to frst speak with your doctor and get clearance for activity, referrals
if needed and the medical advice you may need to make sure you stay
healthy on this journey. Ten look for educated, reliable resource
people to guide you in nutrition and activity. Speak with family and
friends about your desire to make better choices and ask for their
support. Set-up accountability programs like apps that keep track of
your calories and exercise. Join groups or fnd a workout buddy who
wont let you sleep in or a trainer that will be waiting for you with a
smile on and supportive advice. Talk to your kids about how they can
help. Get everyone around you on board as much as possible. Tey say
it takes a village to raise a child. Tis kind of lifestyle change can be one
that needs the same type of support for successful development. Te,
you can inspire someone else. So, lets not only stop the cycle of obesity,
but create a new cycle of health for us and the future.

A Bicycle Friendly Community Benefts More Tan Cyclists
O
n February 4, 2014, Evansville submitted an application to the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) in hopes of
becoming the 10th Indiana community to earn a coveted designation. Just as important will be LABs feedback specifc
to Evansvilles needs, providing guidance on how to become a more bicycle friendly community.
Te LAB feedback will address fve areas, Engineering, Education, Enforcement, Encouragement, and Evaluation and
Planning. LAB feedback will also be determined based upon how it impacts the 60+% of the community that would like to
bike more, but do not.

Te most crucial aspect of the LAB feedback will be how to address those concerns. LAB will suggest ways to impact systems
change policies, procedures, laws, etc. that can have the long term impact necessary to transform Evansville into a Bicycle
Friendly Community.

Examples of LAB feedback might be:
Creating a comprehensive bicycle plan to create more bicycle routes, parking, and Complete Streets
Bicycle lanes are more clearly marked on the street
Policies and laws are created and enforced to promote cycling
Better bicycle education for adults and children, cyclists and non-cyclists
More bicycle events
More engaged law enforcement through training and involvement
Ongoing assessment of progress

Te best part is that this systems change approach will not only impact that 60+% that want to bike more, but do not but
also the smaller percentage of fearless, confdent cyclists as well. It will even beneft those in the community that do not want
to bike at all.
More access to bicycle friendly routes and increased safety benefts everyone in the community. Look at that picture of
Oak Hill Road, a local example of a Complete Street. On a Complete Street, there continues to be a place for motorists,
but there are also places for cyclists and pedestrians as well. If this street led to your destination, you would have more safe
transportation choices.
Becoming a Bicycle Friendly Community is great opportunity to rebrand
Evansville as an attractive destination to live, work, play, and visit.
From the Cover
Your Guide to an Active Lifestyle in the Tri-State 19
Even a dedicated bicycle lane along a road without sidewalks would provide pedestrians and runners a safer route. Motorists
will feel less stress driving on roads with bicycle lanes as any ambiguity as to where cyclists should be, real or perceived, is
removed.
Other infrastructure projects, like Road diets, (transforming 4 lane roads to three with a dedicated turn-only center lane) have
many benefts as well. Pedestrians no longer have to cross four lanes of trafc at once, cyclists are not contending with lane-
changing motorists, and motorists experience less stress without an impact to their commute times.
A Bicycle Friendly Community designation will also beneft the city itself. In addition to improved access and safety, research
shows bicycle friendly communities positively impact economic development, public health, the environment, and real estate
value, just to name a few.
More research can be found at: http://www.evansville-areatrailscoalition.org/?page_id=430
Cities can promote a Bicycle Friendly designation to attract new businesses. Businesses can promote a Bicycle Friendly
designation to attract new talent. Colleges and Universities can promote a Bicycle Friendly designation to expand enrollment.
We are in competition with other cities for these, as well as our current residents, students, and businesses -- whether we want
to be or not.
Becoming a Bicycle Friendly Community is great opportunity to re brand Evansville as an attractive destination to live, work,
play, and visit.

THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT
A quick look at the Greater Henderson Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan
Te entire 43 page plan which was put together by the Evansville Metropolitan Planning Organization can be read here
http://www.evansvillempo.com - it is under Henderson 2014 Bicycle Pedestrian Plan
Te Greater Henderson Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan is a planning efort
to make the Henderson area more bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly.

It is full of great resource and information. It includes details on the history, the
present conditions, and the future plans for Henderson. It goes into detail on routes,
costs, timetables, bike lane design, and more. It looks like some great improvement
are coming to Henderson soon. Te plan includes proposed networks of 10 miles
of bike lanes, 11 miles of shared lanes and approximately 100 miles of signed routes
For those looking to explore Henderson right now there are several great Easter Eggs in
this plan. It not only lets you know about the current trails already in use, but it maps out
around 100 miles of great rural riding around Henderson.
