bellefs, behavlors and pollcy preferences Lhrough a serles of naLlonal surveys. We observed a sharp decllne
ln publlc engagemenL from Lhe fall of 2008 Lo !anuary 2010, and a gradual rebound sLarLlng ln !une 2010. ln
our mosL recenL survey ln SepLember 2012, we found LhaL Lhe rebound ln publlc engagemenL has conLlnued:
Lhe AlotmeJ, coocetoeJ and cootloos audlence segmenLs once agaln comprlse 70 percenL of Lhe Amerlcan
publlc, as Lhey dld ln Lhe fall of 2008. Moreover, Lhere was boLh slgnlflcanL growLh ln Lhe slze of Lhe AlotmeJ

Changes |n the S|ze of Segments

When Lhe audlence segmenLs were flrsL ldenLlfled ln Lhe fall of 2008, [usL over half Lhe u.S.
populaLlon fell lnLo Lhe Lwo mosL concerned segmenLs Lhe AlotmeJ and coocetoeJ. 8y !anuary 2010, Lhe
proporLlon ln Lhese Lwo segmenLs had decreased by 11 percenLage polnLs, and Lhe proporLlon ln Lhe leasL
concerned segmenL, Lhe ulsmlsslve, had more Lhan doubled from 7 Lo 16 percenL of Lhe populaLlon.
1hese changes were conslsLenL wlLh mulLlple naLlonal polls showlng slmllar shlfLs ln publlc oplnlon aL
LhaL Llme, and are llkely Lhe resulL of several facLors, lncludlng Lhe recesslon, decreases ln medla coverage,
cllmaLegaLe, and cues from political elites.
8y !une of 2010, however, Lhe AlotmeJ had rebounded by 3 percenLage polnLs, whlle Lhe ulsmlsslve
shrank by 4 percenL. ln 2011 Lhere was llLLle change ln Lhe segmenL slzes, beyond a furLher decrease ln Lhe
ulsmlsslve and a correspondlng growLh ln Lhe uoobtfol.
ln 2012 Lhere was a gradual lncrease ln Lhe slzes of Lhe more concerned segmenLs: ln Aprll we found
an lncrease of 3 percenLage polnLs ln Lhe cootloos, and a decllne ln Lhe ulseoqoqeJ. 8y SepLember, Lhe
AlotmeJ had lncreased Lo 16 percenL and Lhe coocetoeJ Lo 29 percenL, whlle Lhe ulsmlsslve (8), uoobtfol
