What are storage devices?
Storage Devices are the data storage devices that are used in the
computers to store the data. The computer has many types of data
storage devices. Some of them can be classified as the removable
data storage devices and the others as the non removable data
storage devices.
The memory of storage devices are
of two types:
Primary memory :This memory is either volatile or non-
violate. Volatile memory is the kind of the memory that the
content is erasable while non volatile memory is the one
where the contents cannot be erased

Secondary memory :is used to store the
data permanently in the computer.

Floppy discs

A Floppy Disk Drive, or FDD or FD for short, is a computer disk drive that
enables a user to save data to removable diskettes. Although 8" disk drives
were first made available in 1971, the first real disk drives used were the 5
1/4" floppy disk drives, which were later replaced with 3 1/2" floppy disk
drives. Floppy disks are read and written by a floppy disk drive.

CD-ROM

Short for Compact Disc-Read Only Memory, CD-ROM drives
or optical drives are CD players inside computers that can have
speeds in the range from 1x and beyond, and have the capability of
playing audio CDs and computer data CDs.

Below is a picture of the front and back of
a standard CD-ROM drive.

Fixed hard discs

A hard disk drive is the device used to store large amounts of digital
information in computers and related equipment like iPods and games
consoles such as the Xbox 360 and PS3.Hard disk drives are used to
store operating systems, software and working data. These are suitable

reading and writing to. These are suitable for any application which
requires very fast access to data for both reading and writing to.
However, Hard disk drives may not be suitable for applications which
need portability. Almost all computers used a fixed hard disc.

CD-R
CD-R referred to as a cd writer, CD-WO (Write once), WORM
(Write Once Read Many) drive. CD-R is short for CD-Recordable
and is a writable disc and drive that is capable of having information
written to the disc once and then having that disc read many times after
that.

Jump drive

Alternatively referred to as a USB flash drive, data
stick, pen drive, key chain drive and thumb drive,a jump
drive is a portable drive that is often the size of your
thumb that connects to the computer USB port.
Today, flash drives are available in sizes such as
256MB, 512MB, 1GB, 5GB, and 16GB and are an
easy way to transfer and store information.

Flash memory cards

A memory card or flash memory card is a solid-state electronic flash memory data storage
device used with digital cameras, handheld and Mobile computers, telephones, music players,
video game consoles, and other electronics.
Nowadays, most new PCs have built-in slots for a variety of memory cards; Memory Stick,
CompactFlash, SD, etc. Some digital gadgets support more than one memory card to ensure
compatibility.

Tape

A magnetically thin coated piece plastic wrapped around wheels
capable of storing data. Tape is much less expensive than other
storage mediums but commonly a much slower solution that is
commonly used for backup

Portable hard discs

Portable hard discs are data that can be taken all
over the place and transfer information, programs,
pictures and so on between computers.
