1-Individual Reflection/Portfolio
(a)Reflection on the topic
i. Briefly explain what you learned today
There were two major things that I have learned today which is constructivist learning environment and
instrument development to assess constructivist teaching and learning. For the constructivist-learning
environment, I learned that education works best when it concentrates on thinking and understanding,
rather than on rote memorization. Constructivism concentrates on learning how to think and understand.
If we looked at Cikgu Jamilahs teaching we can see that students were taught which is to memorize the
information given by Cikgu Jamilah. Students were not encouraged or urge to think or to build knowledge
through any activities done in Cikgu Jamilahs lesson. There were many activities prepared by Cikgu
Jamilah, however those activities promote rote memorization as well. Based on todays lesson, I also
learned that constructivism promotes social and communication skills by creating a classroom
environment that emphasize collaboration and exchange of ideas. In order to make this happen, teacher
should play an important role to guide the students to learn how to articulate their ideas clearly as well as
to collaborate on tasks effectively by sharing in their group projects. Students must therefore be directed
or guided on how they can exchange ideas and so must learn to "negotiate" with others and to evaluate
their contributions in a socially acceptable manner. This is essential to success in the real world, since
they will always be exposed to a variety of experiences in which they will have to cooperate and navigate
among the ideas of others.

ii. What was the most important thing you learned in todays session?
The most important thing I learned in todays lesson is that in the constructivist classroom, the focus
tends to shift from the teacher to the students. I also learnt that the classroom is no longer a place where
the teacher pours knowledge into passive students, who wait like empty vessels to be filled. In the
constructivist model, teacher should urge the students to be actively involved in their own process of
learning. The teacher functions more as a facilitator who coaches, mediates, prompts, and helps students
develop and assess their understanding, and thereby their learning. One of the teacher's biggest jobs
becomes asking good question. Moreover, I also believed that scaffolding will allows students to perform
tasks independently without that assistance and guidance from the teacher. Appropriate teacher support
can allow students to function at the cutting edge of their individual development. Scaffolding is therefore
an important characteristic of constructivist learning and teaching.

iii. What questions or enquiry do you have from todays session that remains unanswered?
I believed that all questions, enquiry or doubt were all answered.

(b) Reflection on the learning process
i. Describe your role in the group discussion and how you felt about it?
In this group discussion, my role is a team leader and acted as a chairperson. As a chairperson of this PBL
session for my group, I have to lead the group through the process. At the same time I have to encourage
all members to participate in the discussion. I also have to make sure everybody have something to say
and to contribute ideas. It is very important for me to keep group dynamics and make sure we discuss
everything within the time limit. I also have to make sure each member to keep to task in hand. Never let
them astray from the main topic. And what most important is that I also have to make sure that scribe can
keep up and make an accurate record of our discussion. Based on this experience, I think being a team
leader/chairperson is a challenging responsibility. However, it is a very good practice for me to learn to
manage and organize a group discussion like this. Holding a responsibility as a leader actually gave me
numerous benefits. For instance, I get an opportunity to practice my communication and leadership skills.
I feel really motivated as I realized that I have to play an integral role in driving the success of my groups.
I also have to have a strong work ethics that is to commit to the goals and objective and is keen to abide
by the laid down ground rules and guideline. Overall, I feel satisfy with my team members entire
cooperation throughout the session.

ii. Does your group collaborate well? All members contribute equally during discussions? Elaborate
your responses.
Overall, my group members collaborated well and committed in the group discussion in class or online.
All members contributed fairly and equally and all of us are aware of each and everyones tasks and
assignment. Since we have agreed to the ground rules of our group, working cooperatively in group are
well beneficial. I think by working together in group discussion collaboratively, it was effectively
enhance our understanding in the topic given. We learn from each other and benefits from activities that
require us to articulate and test our understanding throughout the PBL session. Our group work provided
opportunities for each one of us to clarify and refine our understanding of the constructivist learning
environment concept through discussion and presentation. I value the development of group work and
working with my groups also motivates me to do better and understand the concept deeper. By working
collaboratively, I think my colleagues have also develop more sense of responsibility. I felt that because
when we are working in a group, it is not possible to slack off or to put things off. Each one of us has to
keep working and committing otherwise we would be letting each other people down. Last but not least, I
found that working collaboratively with my group members, we learned how to utilize our time
effectively. Having to do group work has change the way I worked, as I have to be more organized and
efficient and punctuality is the very important.

2- Group reflection
Brief descriptions of what was the main ideas discussed in todays group discussion. What were the
suggestions? What decision were made and why? Do reflect on these decisions. Were there good ones?
Why or why not? What reservations does your group have?
Two main aspects that have been discussed were the constructivist learning environment concept and
development of the instrument that suitable to assess or evaluate teaching. Through the PBL session, We
have outlined a number of ideas such as teacher-centred, teacher poses Lower Order Thinking Skills type
of questions, lesson based on repetition and memorization as well as teacher doesnt elicit students prior
knowledge. Based on each idea we generated learning issues that are focusing on development of the
instrument which was the main task given in the scenario/ situation. Among the learning issues we come
out with were the components that involved in constructivist teaching and learning process, how
constructivist learning is implemented in class, how to measure & assess constructivist approach, the
differences between constructivist learning from traditional method and the implication of using
constructivism method in teaching. After having discussions and based on our readings and research, we
come to an agreement that we decided to use Constructivist Learning Environment Survey to assess
Cikgu Jamilahs teaching. Once we have the result, we come out with suggestions regarding to our task
about constructivist learning. Our suggestions as that Cikgu Jamilah must apply constructivist approach in
her science lesson.. Constructivist approaches support much on student-centred activities rather than
teacher-centred curriculum and instruction. Moreover, the best way to plan teacher worksheets, lesson
plans, and study skills for the students, is to create a curriculum which allows each student to solve
problems while the teacher monitors and flexibly guides the students to the correct answer, while
encouraging critical thinking. The classroom experience should be an invitation for a myriad of different
backgrounds and the learning experience which allows the different backgrounds to come together and
observe and analyze information and ideas. Hands-on activities are the best for the classroom applications

of constructivism, critical thinking and learning. In addition, constructivist learning is an active process,
and alternative assessment celebrates this active process. Instead of testing for the presence or absence of
discrete bits of information, alternative assessment instead provides a means to understand whether
students organize, structure, and use information in context to solve complex problems.
The constructivist teacher must as well help the students through problem-solving and inquiry-based
learning activities with which students formulate and test their ideas, draw conclusions and inferences,
and pool and convey their knowledge in a collaborative learning environment. Teacher should ask
questions and listen carefully to students interpretations of the data. The teacher must push students to
think as clearly as they can about their ideas. The students, not the teacher, are responsible for defending,
proving, justifying, and communicating their ideas to the classroom. These types of tasks place a very
high cognitive demand on the students. Students are asked to take on more responsibility for task
management than in conventional instruction. This shift of responsibility is necessary if students are to
become autonomous thinkers and learners; yet, many students are not used to managing their own
learning. In conclusion, we have been delighted with our outcomes and suggestions during the period of
completing our task on constructivist learning and tools evaluation. We are looking forward to apply these
in future.
