DECON STUDRAILS
1.0 EVALUATION SCOPE
Compliance with the following codes:
# 2006 International Building Code

(IBC)
# 1997 Uniform Building Code (UBC)
Properties evaluated:
Structural
2.0 USES
Decon Studrails are used as shear reinforcement in flat
concrete slabs to replace stirrups, drop panels or column
capitals in increasing the punching shear resistance of the
slabs.
3.0 DESCRIPTION
3.1 General:
Decon Studrails are large-head shear studs that are welded to
steel plates.
3.2 Materials:
3.2.1 Shear Studs: The shear studs are formed from ASTM
A 108 Grades 1010 through 1020 steel satisfying the following
physical requirements:
Yield strength: 51,000 psi (350 MPa), minimum.
Tensile strength: 65,000 psi (450 MPa), minimum.
Elongation: 20 percent in 2 inches (51 mm).
Reduction of area: 50 percent, minimum.
Dimensions of the shear studs are in Table 1.
3.2.2 Rails: The rails are formed from CSA 44W steel
satisfying the following requirements:
Yield strength: 44,000 psi (300 MPa), minimum.
Tensile strength: 65,000 psi (450 MPa), minimum.
Elongation: 20 percent in 8 inches (203 mm).
Dimensions of the rails are in Table 1.
3.2.3 Welding: The studs are welded to the rails in
conformance with AWS D1.1.
4.0 DESIGN AND INSTALLATION
4.1 General:
Installation of the stud/plate assemblies must comply with
Section 1912 of the IBC (Appendix D, ACI 318-05) or Section
1923.2 of the UBC, and the approved plans.
4.1.1 Design: General requirements for shear resistance
design are presented in Section 11 of ACI 318-05 for
recognition under the IBC, and Section 1911 of the UBC for
recognition under the UBC. Studrails must be designed in
accordance with ACI 421.1R-99 in place of Section 11.12 of
ACI 318-05 or Section 1911.12 of the UBC. ACI 421.1R-99
summarizes the design requirements as they apply to shear
stud reinforcement.
4.1.2 Design Considerations: The structural design must
determine and specify the following items, based on design
requirements in this report:
a. The number of studs per rail
b. Stud spacing (s)
c. Studrail height (OAH)
d. Rail length (OAL)
e. Distance between column face and first line of studs (s
o
)
f. Stud size
g. Stud/rail material specifications
h. Rail thickness, width and length
4.1.3 Earthquake Forces: The stud rail reinforcement may
be used at slab-to-column connections of structures where the
flat slab is used with primary lateral forceresisting elements,
such as shear walls under the following conditions:
Lateral forceresisting elements of the structure must be
designed using either the IBC or the UBC.
For applications in accordance with the IBC, the designs
must be in accordance with requirements of Chapter 16 and
19, Section 1910, the special provisions for seismic design
of Section 21 of ACI 318-05, and modifications to Section 21
of ACI 318-05 contained within IBC Sections 1908.1.2 to
1908.1.7. Equation 21-10 of ACI 318-05 must be modified
as follows:
V
n
= A
CV
(1.5/f
c
N + D
t
f

)
For applications in accordance with the UBC, the designs
must be in accordance with requirements of Chapter 16,
Division IV, and Chapter 19, including specific provisions of
Section 1921. Equation 21-6 of the UBC must be modified
as follows:
V
n
= A
CV
(1.5/f

Designs using the IBC or UBC must limit the story drift ratio
to a maximum of 1.5 percent.
Shear reinforcement is provided by the studrails.
4.2 Installation:
Installation must comply with Chapter 19 of the applicable
code, and the approved plans. To maintain required bottom
concrete cover, studrails are set on plastic chairs that are
clipped to the rail. The rails are then positioned and secured
to formwork by nailing through the preformed holes in the
chair legs. Figure 1 describes typical details.
4.3 Special Inspection:
Continuous special inspection is required according to Section
1704.4 of the IBC or Section 1701.5.1 of the UBC. The special
inspector is responsible for verifying identification of the
studrail and its condition, positioning, clearances, and
concrete cover.
5.0 CONDITIONS OF USE
The Decon Studrails described in this report comply with, or
are suitable alternatives to what is specified in, those codes
listed in Section 1.0 of this report, subject to the following
conditions:
5.1 The welded and fabricated shear stud reinforcement
plate assemblies must be designed in accordance with
Section 4.1 of this report.
5.2 The design for the finished assemblies must specify the
details described in Section 4.1.2.
5.3 Installation of the finished assemblies must be in
accordance with Section 4.2 of this report.
5.4 Special inspection must be provided in accordance with
Section 4.3 of this report.
5.5 The studrails are fabricated at the Continental Decon,
Inc., facility located in Ontario, Canada, with inspections
by Intertek Testing Services NA, Ltd.
6.0 EVIDENCE SUBMITTED
Reports of structural tests and analyses, reports of weld base
qualification tests, calculations, and a quality control manual.
7.0 IDENTIFICATION
