Builders are now obligated under BCA 2010
provisions to achieve a minimum 6 Star
Energy Efciency rating when constructing
new dwellings or major renovations.
In order to adhere with these provisions, builders must
provide U-Value and SHGC. But what are they and what
does it mean for you?
U-Value
In simple terms, U-Value measures the thermal insulation
properties of a glazing system. It is a common term used
within the glazing industry. Whether youre trying to keep
the heat out or in, the lower the value the better, regardless
of climate zone.
SHGC
The SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefcient) refers to the amount
of solar energy transmittance entering a building through
the glazing as heat gain. SHGC can be translated as a
percentage of the suns total energy (heat) allowed to enter.
For example:
An SHGC of 0.86 equates to 86% therefore 86% of the
suns total direct heat is being let in through the glass.
In warm climates a lower SHGC is usually desirable
keeping unwanted solar heat out, while in cool climates a
higher SHGC provides natural warmth during winter.
Remember, U-Value measures insulation, while SHGC
measures heat via sunlight.
