Kirtan Opening theHeart of Devotion
What i s Ki r tan? What i s thi s love affai r ? Ki r tan i s devoti on. Ki r tan i s si ngi ng
to the di vi ne. As we open our hear ts to si ng i n devoti on, we exper i ence the
sweetness of the di vi ne i n us. I t' becomes r ealour beloved i s present, ri ght

I n Ki r tan we ar e vi br ated to the cor e of our bei ng. The mantr as and sounds of
Ki r tan chants sti r and awaken spi r i tual quali ti es i n us. The ener gy li fts us
above the mi nd, where thoughts cant seem to r each us. Worry and str ess sli de
off. We touch the di vi ne wi thi n us and si t wi th i t. The di vi ne takes us. We feel
her hold us i n her arms for a whi le.

You can feel di ffer ent quali ti es of the di vi ne i nvoked by di ffer ent mantr as and
chants. How i s that possi ble? Si ngi ng to the dei ti es by name Shi va, Kri shna,
Ram, Hanuman, Si ta, Radha, Par vati , Kali , Dur ga, Lashmi , Sar aswati , on and

what about thi s beauty i s so spell-bi ndi ng? We ar e so attr acted to beauty
because i t remi nds us who we are. I t shows us the nature of our true self the
awe of endless beauty. Ki r tan awakens i n us the beauty of r emember i ng of

Bhakti Yoga, the path of devoti on, i s the j our ney to fi nd love fi r st fi ndi ng the
beloved wi thi n our own hear ts and then fi ndi ng the beloved i n all thi ngs and
people. Ki r tan and other devoti onal pr acti ces ar e the cor e of Bhakti Yoga. I n
Ki r tan a flood of love ar i ses and melts the di sti ncti on between me and you,
i nner and outer . Thi s i s the per fecti on of Bhakti Yoga. I t i s wr i tten and many
cur r ent spi r i tual master s asser t that at the dar kest ti me of the Kali Yuga (Age
of Darkness) Ki r tan wi ll become the most potent means for accessi ng and
br i ngi ng for th the di vi ne i n us.

My Li f el ong J our ney Si ngi ng Ki r t an

Si ngi ng Ki r tan has been a lifelong journey. I fi r st chanted Ki r tan at an ashr am
on Long I sland, New York, i n 1972. Si xteen year s old, I followed along wi th no
wr i tten wor ds, pi cki ng up the chants by ear . I t was completely wei r d. Yet,
after a whi le, mergi ng wi th the flow of the songs and the one flow of the group,
I suddenly felt homedoi ng the r i ght thi ng, somethi ng fami li ar and completely
sati sfyi ng. I began to si nk i nto a peace I had never felt befor e.

Govi nda J aya J aya Gopala J aya J aya Radha Ramana Har i Govi nda J aya J aya
was the fi r st chant I ever sang. I have no i dea what I was actually si ngi ng or
thi nki ng, but I loved i t week after week i t j ust got better and better .

At my fi r st weekend r etr eat i n Connecti cut a couple of months later , we
gather ed for yoga, medi tati on, and a spi r i tual talk i n the mor ni ng. I n the
afternoon, leaders told us we would chant for si x hour s and then si t for
medi tati on. Si x hours of Ki rtan! How would thi s be possi ble? I n di sbeli ef, I
also felt exci ted. People fr om all over New England wer e doi ng the same thi ng!
Here was some ki nd of spi ri tual movement, a spiri tual family, I had j oi ned.

The spi r i t of oneness i n that Ki r tan was pr ofound, celesti al, as though we had
enter ed another di mensi on. I t was the coolest thi ng I d ever exper i enced. At
one poi nt when the chanti ng got i ncr edi bly vi br ant, the chandeli er fell fr om the
cei li ng, cr ashi ng down i nto the gr oup but hi tti ng no one. I was amazed.

After si x hour s of Ki r tan, we sat to medi tate. I closed my eyes and r epeated my
mantr a. I hear d my mantr a echo acr oss the empty expanse of space. I had
found what I had been longi ng forI was home. Sati sfacti on bubbled up
wi thi n me.

I was hooked and i n a few weeks j oi ned hundr eds of follower s at the 1972
nati onal r etr eat i n Hutchi nson, Kansas. Ther e wer e I ndi an monks, or ange
everywhere, the works: Talks about karma, samskar a, medi tati on, and the
spi r i tual master . Four hour s of medi tati on each day, knees falli ng off,
ever yone getti ng si ck. Spontaneous chanti ng ci r cles on the lawn. Kar ma
burni ng, people freaki ng out, food runni ng out. We were new at thi s. But all
along, the peace was profound. I was wi de-eyed, looki ng at all thi s wi th such
amazement.

The r etr eat ended, and on the car ri de home i t fi nally hi t me how tr anscended
we all became over the two weeks. Somethi ng i n me had shi fted. The wor ld
was a di ffer ent place now. Nothi ng r eally matter ed, except thi s bli ssful
connecti on I was exper i enci ng.

I fell i n love wi th Ki rtan more and more, taking my gui tar to r etr eats and
lear ni ng new chants. One day, I took a cour ageous leap and took out my
gui tar dur i ng Ki r tan and star ted playi ng along, j azz chor ds and all. I t felt
gr eat. Then the Ki r tan poli ce came over and stopped me. I guess i t was too

r adi cal at that ti me. But I got home and star ted playi ng gui tar to my own
chanti ng and the li ttle bhakti gr oup we had at college. I dr opped out of college,
but stayed ar ound and would play Ki r tan i n the hallways at the dor m.

I n 1975 I was off to I ndi a to see my Gur u Anandamur ti j i and stay at hi s
ashram i n Varanasi . After a few months there, returni ng to the US, I tr avel ed
acr oss the countr y chanti ng i n the Ananda Mar ga ashr ams and r etr eats.

Settli ng i n Color ado, I took on the challenges of mar r i age, r ai si ng chi ldr en,
and car eer . Responsi bi li ti es took pr i or i ty over the wander i ng bhakti . The
1980's seemed li ke a spi r i tual lull for ever yone I knew. So many spi r i tual
master s wer e leavi ng the body. The 1990's seemed to br i ng a spi r i tual
spr i ngti me. At a medi tati on r etr eat wi th Oceana, I hear d a woman si ngi ng a
devoti onal song. Somethi ng welled up i n me, and I r eali zed how long i t had
been si nce I had that deep feeli ng of love of God i n my hear t. I had been dr y,
and I could feel the year s of not chanti ng. I got home, took out my gui tar , and
sang. I t felt gr eat to r etur n to the hear t of devoti on.

Later i n the 1990's my fri end Pamela Wi lson had me li sten to a CD of a Ki rtan
walla named Kri shna Das. The transmi ssi on of Neem Karoli Baba came
thr ough that r ecor di ng of Kr i shna Das, and Ki r tan took on a deeper meani ng.

I was chanti ng at Ni r mala's r etr eat i n Ojo Cali ente when a gr oup of my fr i ends
hear d me and deci ded we should star t a r egular Ki r tan gr oup i n Boulder .
Thanks to them, that was the begi nni ng of the Sunday ni ght Boulder Ki r tan
that conti nues sti ll.

I n 2003 I met my gur u, Ma J aya Sati Bhagavati Ma J aya, and by her gr ace and
gui dance, Ki r tan took on a mor e r eal and deeper meani ng for me. My path

takes me now to Flor i da to be wi th Ma J aya. I 'll mi ss the ni ghts of sheer bli ss,

I ts an i ncr edi ble gi ft to be abl e to si ng Ki rtan. I hope thi s songbook and the

Ganesha

Lord Ganesha is the remover of obstacles. The friend of all spiritual seekers and
finders, he guides and protects us on our way.

We sing to Ganesha at the beginning of Kirtan to open our hearts and be shown
our beloved. We bask in our beloved all through Kirtan.

The essence of Kirtan is singing to that which we love most, to unite in love with
our Beloved. We can ask Ganesha to show us who or what it is that we love most in
this life.

Divine Mother

The entire Universe IS the Divine Mother. Her Bliss-Body comprises all
of creation.

We sing to the Mother that we may realize the divinity in all of creation,
the joyous and the painful equally.

The compassionate protector of her creation, she removes all suffering
and brings beauty, abundance, and the wisdom to realize the truth of
being.

Shiva and Parvati

Lord Shiva and Parvati represent the completion of Shiva and Shakti --
the union of divine masculine and feminine energy.

Shiva is pure consciousness and Shakti is the force of creation in union.

The realization of Shiva -- pure consciousness -- is the realization of our eternal
nature as infinite and immortal, never born or dying.

The union of Shakti is the realization that the world and consciousness, matter
and spirit, are the one Shiva transformed into many by Shakti.

Radha and Krishna

Krishna and Radha are the Lord and Goddess of Divine Love.
In them, we celebrate the ecstasy of love for God.

Through divine relationship they show us the oneness of lover
and beloved. God lives in the heart of the devotee, and the devotee lives in the
heart of God. There can be no separation in the purity of love - only oneness.

Puja means devotional worship.

There is a longing in human beings -- known or unknown-- to worship the
greatness that we are part of. In puja we celebrate and affirm our oneness with all
being.

Lord Hanuman represents the perfection of devotion -- Humility and Service to
Humanity.
