Prlogo

Foreword
The travel and tourism industry has been consolidating itself as one of the fastest-growing productive
sectors in the world economy. This dynamism is explained, on the one hand, by the change in the prole
of tourists, and on the other, by the use of new information and communications media.
Indeed, social progress and the use of new technologies that facilitate access to information have boosted
interest in travel over other ways of spending leisure time. New technologies have had an impact on
both service providers and nal consumers of tourism products. Their use has allowed providers to
improve their operations and distribution channels, as well as to increase their communication with their
customers, and has facilitated the access of consumers to the exchange of information and experiences.
Considering the importance of this phenomenon, the Regional Programme for the Americas of the World
Tourism Organization (UNWTO) organized a technical seminar on tourism and new technologies in the
context of the 55th meeting of the Commission for the Americas, held in the city of San Jose, Costa Rica.
The seminar, which was attended by distinguished experts and specialists, was structured into four
panels.
The rst panel, on Internet and social media marketing applied to tourism, discussed how the
development of the Internet and social media has revolutionized tourism marketing and how tourism
destinations and organizations that have invested in an online presence are experiencing a boost to their
competitiveness, presence and brand image.
The second panel, on Tourism and mobile marketing, was aimed at analyzing how communication
and the ow of information have increased on mobile devices relative to traditional media. Mobile
platforms also propel the opportunity to develop on location marketing, leading to the personalization
of products and thus creating a richer experience for users.
The third panel, on New technologies applied to travel facilitation (airport controls and visa issuance),
demonstrated the fact that destinations that have improved their visa-issuance policies and criteria as
well as their border-crossing procedures have seen increases in their tourism ows.
The fourth panel, Tourism across the screens, explored how to best use television and media-rich
content to promote destinations in an ever-changing media landscape.
To close the seminar, the study The Social Traveller 2013 A Global Review produced by NH Hotels
was presented.
The subjects addressed by the different experts have been collected in this publication with a view to
providing a valuable resource that we hope will be useful for exploring the evolution and impact of
technology in tourism, so as to generate the most suitable and comfortable conditions for tourists and
travellers of the future.

39 Panel 1
Five Travel Trends that Matter
Sam Thompson
Commercial Director for the Americas, TripAdvisor, United States of America
The tourism landscape has been dramatically altered by the adoption of the internet and mobile devices.
With more than 200 million users every month, over 100 million reviews and opinions, and 2.5 million
businesses listed, TripAdvisor is uniquely positioned to track and understand traveler behavior. The
following is intended to give hotels an outline for succeeding in this new environment by identifying 5
important trends occurring in the travel space.
Overall Reputation Management does affect the bottom line Fundamentally business has not
changed. Reputation Management has always driven revenue and prots, and will continue to do so in
this new digital environment. Independent studies have shown that higher online reputations directly
help a hotel charge higher rates without any impact to occupancy. Given this, hotels must develop a
plan for managing their online reputation, and they should leverage online tools, like those found in
TripAdvisor, to assist with the effort.
Reviews are Highly Inuential 93% of travelers say that online reviews affect their hotel booking
decision. 96% of hotels say that their online reputation affects bookings. Further, 98% of travelers nd
TripAdvisor reviews to be accurate of their hotel stay. Hotels should recognize the nancial benets of
online reviews and encourage guests to write reviews after their visit.
The Wisdom of Friends is most Valuable Facebook has provided high trafc for many businesses,
including TripAdvisor (35% of new reviews posted on TripAdvisor come from Facebookconnected
users). The driving force behind Facebook: 92% of people trust recommendations from people they
know. Facebook gives people access to their friends regardless of location, time of day, or last contact.
Hotels need to incorporate this medium in their overall strategy.
Mobile is Unstoppable Mobile devices are versatile, inexpensive, and powerful, lending to their wide
adoption and integration with travel. In the United States of America, 98% of all travelers own a mobile
phone. 72% of travelers around the world nd making travel plans through their mobile device useful.
By 2014, mobile bookings will generate over US$ 25 billion in the United States of America. Hotels
must develop a plan for embracing mobile devices.
Deals, deals, deals Hotel shoppers are increasingly looking for good deals. The rst step to designing a
good deal is to know what will resonate with your clientele. Hotels should develop a plan to provide the
right offers to their guests to keep them coming back. TripAdvisors Business Listing product leverages
a Special Offer feature to assist hotels with getting their deal in front of millions of prospective clients
every month.

45 Panel 1
For tourists who already have a destination in mind, it is important to provide practical subsidies so that
the experience begins to materialize in order to be denitely marketed:
Youtube: A differential is the preparation of itineraries according to the user prole, presenting results
through videos
For tourists who are already motivated and considering to travel to another destination, a tool that helps
to purchase is a process facilitator:
TripPlanner: Providing trade with a space to promote products and services to the followers of Brazil
The interaction with users of social networks will occur during all the moments of the trip. This enables
the access to the real content of tourists sharing their experiences, which gives more credibility to the
information: Facebook and Twitter.
Souvenir is an App for mobile phones destined to provide information about tourist destinations and
attractions, focusing on the memories of the experience. Souvenir is the moment in which tourists share
their experiences and make other tourists consider the possibility to travel to that same destination.

Las plataformas mviles en el marketing turstico
Tourism and mobile marketing
The evolution of technological developments demonstrates clearly that communication, and particularly
the internet, is going mobile. A plethora of different devices are emerging to serve consumers on the go.
Social media are now accessed more on smartphones than desktop computers. Mobile platforms also
propel the opportunity to develop on location and context based marketing leading to personalization
and individualization of products and hence creating a more rich experience for users.

51 Panel 2
Turismo y las aplicaciones mviles
Enrique Stellabatti
Vicepresidente, Proexport (Colombia)

Panel 3
Las tecnologas aplicadas
a la facilitacin de los viajes
(controles aeroportuarios, procesos migratorios)
New technologies applied to travel facilitation
(airport controls and visa issuance)
trmites y procesos.
According to a report presented by Tourism Economics in the T20 Ministerial meeting, G20 economies
could increase their international tourist numbers, generate additional revenues in tourism exports and
create over ve million additional jobs by 2015 by improving their visa processes. This will also be
applicable to any destination around the world, as existing case studies show substantial, and in some
cases, dramatic increases in visitation when visa-related policies and processes are improved. Despite
the improvements made in recent decades in terms of visa facilitation by a good number of countries,
there is still room for considerable progress, namely considering the possibilities offered by technology.
This panel will explore this eld and will look into how the existing technology could become an
important tool to improve those processes.
