Piracy: A Silent Plague
on Ufology

To quote a Chinese Proverb: “When
someone shares something of value with you
and you benefit from it, you have a moral
obligation to share it with others”, which is
what I’ll try to do in this article.
I have been working closely with my
Webmaster, researcher Frank Warren,
www.theufochronicles.com and Aztec
researchers Scott and Suzanne Ramsey for the
past 12 years, on various UFO cases, highly
respecting them for their honesty and thorough
investigations. We have dealt with debunkers,
skeptics and critics of all sorts, and have even
welcomed their comments, if and when, the
information they presented was factually
worthy of review.
There is another, quieter element in
Ufology, aside from debunkers, skeptics, and
critics. They are the hucksters who use other
researcher’s work without doing their own;
those who take from other’s research, or
articles, and publish the work as their own
(plagiarism). Then there are still other
scoundrels who market or sell researchers’
works, such as DVDs of lectures, books, or
documentaries, without permission or financial
arrangements made with the researchers
(piracy). I have recently found that I am myself,
a victim of piracy, and this is what I feel a moral
obligation to share with my readers.
Until a few days ago, one could go to
UFOGuy.com, an online UFO store, with the
claim, “Discount Paranormal DVDs Direct
from Producer/Distributor,” and purchase an
impressive compendium DVD set “Aliens
Among Us: Stunning Secrets About UFOs and
Extraterrestrials”. Included in the set was my
own DVD from my lecture series, “The
Roswell Incident, Then and Now”. Let me be
clear: I had no agreements regarding the

distribution and sale of my copyrighted
material, nor had the owner of the site
UFOGuy.com, Wm.“Bill” Knell contacted me
for permission to include my lecture in his
compilation.
Bill Knell represents himself as a noted
Ufologist, with an impressive list of credentials
such as founding a UFO investigative
organization in Long Island, NY; had his own
cable TV show; claimed to be an advisor to the
X-Files television program; and published a
UFO newsletter. Knell’s also been a guest on
Coast-to-Coast, Paracast, and several other
Internet venues, and has several published
articles. It was one of these articles that first
brought Knell to the attention of investigator
Frank Warren, when in November of 2008; he’d
published an article by mainstream journalist,
Angelina Joiner, on his TheUFO Chronicles
web site. She notified Frank a few days later,
that it appeared Knell was plagiarizing her
article, copy-and-paste-style, in his own
published article.
Frank’s ensuing investigation into Knell
uncovered a decades-long history of
questionable activity, in which his plagiarism
paled in comparison to his other disreputable
deeds. In compiling the names of potential
victims of Knell’s DVD piracy (over a hundred
in question), Frank noticed that one of the
DVDs was a bootleg of the The Aztec Incident,
owned by friend Scott (Ramsey) & Co. Frank
then notified Scott of Knell’s activity and they
joined forces to inform other victims.
Being frustrated with the authorities not
doing anything with the many complaints that
had been filed, Frank Warren and Scott Ramsey
alerted many researchers to what Knell was
doing, and in fact, distributed a list of 80 names
taken from Knell’s website who were potential
victims of Knell’s tactics. Scott had discussed
this with me, so when I saw my name on the list
of victims, I checked Knell’s website, finding
my copyrighted lecture grouped in a 2-DVD set
with 6 other researcher’s presentations. I
notified them, requesting that they file
complaint forms with the IC3, a division of the
FBI. None of them had been aware, nor had
they authorized Knell to compile, distribute or
sell their work.
My next move was to complain directly
to Knell via email on Oct. 20, 2009, with a copy
to his website host Bravenet.com. Not receiving
a response from Knell within 24 hours as
required by Bravenet in order to begin an
investigation into my claim, I emailed a second
complaint to Knell on Oct. 21. Knell responded
with the same lame sob-story excuses he had
sent to others in the past: times were tough,
sales were not that great, terrible illness, etc.
Knell did remove the 2-DVD set from
his site, which according to Frank and Scott,
has been his method of operation in the past.
When someone complains to him about his
operation, he removes the DVDs in question,
then later, when he believes the pressure is off,
he re-posts the DVDs back on his site for sale.

Of more importance to me in his response was
his statement that, “most” of the DVDs he has
sold were his own; a seemingly tacit admission
of questionable activities.
We have been contacting the researchers
that are verified victims of Knell’s activities
(approaching at least 30 at this point), who were
not aware of what he was doing, nor had they
given him permission to compile, distribute or
sell their products.
A few of the law enforcement agencies
that have been notified about Knell’s
operations, and Bravenet’s unresponsiveness in
curtailing his activities, are the Lebanon,
Indiana Police Department, where Knell
resides, the Rowan County Sheriff Department
in North Carolina, FTC, USDA, VISA, State
Attorney Generals of Arizona and Indiana,
Western Union, Royal Canadian Mounted
Police, and others.
We are encouraging those victims
affected to file Complaint Referral Forms with
IC3, at http://www.ic3.gov/ I have written to
Amazon.com informing them that some of the
DVDs being sold on their website by Knell are
not authorized to be sold. Those DVDs are still
on Amazon’s website under a search for Bill
Knell, with approx. 50 DVD titles.
We have been in contact with many
websites that post articles by researchers on the
subject of Ufology, requesting that any articles
written by Knell should be removed, as another
means of removing him from circulation. Frank
had done this in the past with many removing
Knell’s articles after being informed of his
questionable ways. This will be expanded in the
future to more websites, radio hosts, and
researchers in our attempt to support what
Frank and Scott have made many of us aware
of, by joining together and not allowing these
types to get away with their activities.
All the researchers I have been affiliated
with over the years are in the same situation;
doing the best they can do with very little
income for their devotion to the subject of
Ufology. We don’t need scam artists that are
ripping off innocent researchers, or taking
advantage of innocent people that have been
buying his poor quality, unauthorized DVDs.
Bravenet’s responses to my complaints
were unacceptable, as they had been to other
researchers that complained to them, while
continuing to host Knell’s website after
numerous complaints had been filed. Finally,
after several emails to Bravenet informing them
that complaint forms had been submitted to
IC3, they informed me on Oct 26, 2009, that
Knell’s website has been suspended until their
legal department reviews the complaints. I have
requested a copy of their findings and assurance
that his website is permanently shut down.

IS THIS STRANGE
AND DEFORMED
SKULL PROOF THAT
ALIENS REALLY DO
EXIST?

I remember the the day I first laid eyes
on the Starchild skull over a decade ago. I will
never forget the breathtaking moment when I
first held it in my hands and immediately knew
something was seriously “wrong” with it. It was
too light, much too light for a typical human
skull, even one with the slightly reduced size of
an average twelve-year-old. It felt more like a
dried gourd than a skull, and at first glance I
couldn’t see anything normal about it. It was
just plain weird.
Its owners, Ray and Melanie Young of
El Paso, Texas, had invited me to come to El
Paso specifically to examine it and tell them
what I thought. I had some expertise regarding
skulls due to my extensive research into the
truth about human origins and UFO related
issues, much of which I based on contrasting the
many differences between humans and so-
called “pre” human skulls. But I soon realized
Melanie knew even more than me. For many
years she had been a neonatal nurse, seeing a
wide range of human skull deformities and
keenly aware of the technical aspects of what
went into creating such aberrations.
The word that came to mind was
“impossible,” yet there it was, cradled in my
hands, so I had to settle for “incredible.” The
eye sockets were wildly different from normal.
My father was an optometrist, so I knew about
eyes. The neck opening, the foramen magnum,
was well out of place. The lower rear area was
without the small bump on every human’s head
(or chimp’s or gorilla’s, for that matter); it had
no inion. The entire rear area of its head was
flat, but there was no evidence of manipulated
flattening. No cradleboarding caused that
flatness, it had grown that way, as had the eyes,
neck, and inion.
A crease-like dent in the upper rear of
the head clinched it for me, just as it did for
Melanie and Ray. Humans do not exhibit that,
no question. Humans are rounded in that area.
However, something else does have such a
crease, something familiar to everyone in the
field of UFO and alien research. The so-called
“grey” aliens are reputed to have such a dent in
the top rear of their heads, giving them a
distinctive “heart” shape. Dented crown and a
bulbous cranium above a small upper face that
narrowed to a very small lower face.
I held in my hand the detached piece of
upper right jaw (maxilla) found separate from
the cranium (which was also minus its entire
lower jaw). It was the size of an infant, if that
large. This being clearly had an extra small
lower face, and the attachment points for its
chewing muscles bore that out, being greatly
reduced from where they normally were on a
human. I realized I might possibly be holding
the preserved skull of a grey alien. Anyone with
an understanding of basic human anatomy and
of how greys were supposed to look would
make the same staggering connection. They’d
have no choice.
It was all I could do to hold it steady in
my hands as I looked at Ray and Melanie and
told them what I thought, which in so many
words was that it could possibly be the skull of
a grey. It was so incredibly far from normal,
such a wild speculation was conceivable.
Nonetheless, I couldn’t initially make myself
believe it was, in fact, such a stupendous
discovery. I urged them to assume it was a
bizarre deformity, and to maintain that view
until they secured solid proof to the contrary. To
emphasize my doubt, I pegged the chances at
80% deformity and 20% alien, but that 20%
would remain huge until they could prove it
belonged on the 80% side of the ledger
On hearing that, they asked if I would
undertake to scientifically establish their weird
skull’s heritage, whether human or alien, which
began a decade-long quest that continues to this
day. Now, however, I can assure all fans of this
amazing relic that we are at last closing in on a
conclusive determination of its genetic origin. If
all goes as scheduled, in 2010 the skull’s DNA
will be analyzed with a new technique that was
unavailable when its DNA was recovered and
analyzed in 2003. This new test result lies at the
heart of what makes the Starchild skull so
special, and it will comprise the scientific core
of what should prove beyond doubt that the
skull is not entirely human.
Before I discuss the revolutionary test that will
occur this year, let’s revisit what happened in
2003. This is necessary to understand why the
Starchild stands on the threshold of making
history as big as history can be made.
The First Five Years
From 1999 through 2004 the Starchild
was put through a series of scientific tests that
are recounted in detail in The Starchild Skull, a
book published in 2007 (available on
Amazon.com). Recently, the most salient facts
became available in a highly compacted eBook,
Starchild Skull Essentials (available at
StarchildProject.com). Starting with surprising
radiographic X-rays, to the reassuring CAT-scan
results, to the Carbon-14 dating of death at 900
years ago, to the disaster of an initial forensic
DNA test, to the stunning results of a
clandestine analysis with a scanning electron
microscope . . . it’s all there in full detail that
need not be reviewed here. The bottom line is
that at every turn, after every valid test, the
results kept shifting my initial percentage of
doubt away from “human deformity” and
toward an “alien” interpretation
In 1999 there were only a half-dozen
labs that could analyze “ancient” DNA, which
was older than 50 years. At 900 years since
death, the Starchild more than qualified.
However, among those half-dozen labs none
would touch the Starchild with the proverbial
ten-foot-pole. They wanted nothing to do with a
skull that was being touted as potentially alien.
“Doing that,” one wrote to me, “would be bad
for business.” Facing such a stonewall, I
decided to take a chance on a much less
controlled forensic test designed for DNA less
than 50 years old. It was a complete botch that
left us in the lurch until 2003.
By 2003, when we were finally able to
arrange a comprehensive and reliable test for
the Starchild’s ancient DNA, my thinking was
that we were almost certainly looking at an alien
skull. I had swung completely around and now
believed it was a percentage split of 80% alien
and 20% deformity, which probably was being
conservative. I realized that an alien skull
falling into my hands was comparable to the
Dead Sea Scrolls being found by a goat herder.
Nonetheless, he did what he did and I was doing
what I was doing, finding out what I was finding
out, and I knew what the results meant.
Nothing was testing out as typically
human. The bone itself was too light and much
too durable to be purely human. It was more like
tooth enamel than bone. The brain’s volume was
entirely too large for the skull encasing it. Inside
the Starchild’s cranium was a brain 1/3 larger
than normal. Where did all that extra brain go?
How did it all fit in there? Better yet, with such
a high and steep rear angle canted toward the
spinal opening, how had the brain’s matter not
been squeezed out to distend the foramen
magnum? This list of physiological differences
was extensive, with over two dozen major
points. It skewed as far from a normal human
skull as did a chimp or gorilla.(Continued on

DNA 101
No matter how many physiological
differences we came up with, experts from
mainstream science could thwart us at every
turn simply by quoting their Darwinist mantra
that when it came to nature, absolutely anything
was possible. Therefore, we couldn’t show them
any physical variation that they couldn’t explain
by calling upon the unlimited power they
themselves had assigned to nature. It was like
trying to argue with religious zealots. No, it
might have been worse. We certainly couldn’t
find any room for flexibility, so in the end it all
came down to DNA analysis, the premier tool of
scientific certainty. People ended up on death
row because of DNA evidence, just as it saved
others from wrongful convictions. DNA was the
weapon of choice for those wishing to make a
case against closed minds and cowardly spirits.
DNA has two basic types: mitochondrial
and nuclear. In nearly every cell in an animal’s
body, which can amount to trillions, there is a
small core, called the nucleus, surrounded by a
jelly-like substance called cytoplasm. Imagine a
baseball with its cork core, its twine
surrounding, and its durable “skin.” This
analogizes a living cell perfectly: nucleus,
cytoplasm, and outer wall.
Floating around in the cytoplasm like
raisins in pudding are mitochondria, which are
small packets of what are called “base pairs,”
the smallest units of matter that make up genes,
which combine to form the chromosomes. Each
mitochondrion contains about 16,000 base
pairs. Keep that number in mind.
Inside the cell nucleus is the entire
genome of the individual, containing all the
chromosomes given to it by its parents. In
humans that is 23 from Dad and 23 from Mom,
a total of 46. Incredibly, our closest genetic
relatives, chimps and apes, with whom we
supposedly share a very close biological
“descent” from a remote common ancestor,
have 48 chromosomes. This is beyond bizarre,
and I discuss it extensively in my work
regarding human origins, though it plays only a
peripheral role in the Starchild’s case.
The total genome of a typical human is
made up of those 46 chromosomes comprised of
roughly 25,000 genes, which are subdivided
into roughly 3.0 billion (that’s billion with a
“b”) base pairs. So remember that number, too,
and compare it with the 16,000 base pairs in
each mitochondria floating in the cytoplasm
outside the cell’s nucleus. The floating
mitochondria are like tiny grains of sand in
relation to the basketball-sized nucleus.
Mitochondria are passed down intact
from generation to generation solely by
females. They change only slightly over the
centuries, with a mutation here and a mutation
there, but by and large staying the same.
Whether you are male or female, you have
essentially the same mitochondria possessed by
100 or more generations in your family line,
back to the first female in your line. Thus, they
are easy to track throughout the course of
genetic testing.
The DNA inside the nucleus of cells is
much harder to recover intact than the DNA
inside mitochondria because it is much larger
and far more fragile, and because there is so
incredibly much more of it to degrade. Also,
because it comes from both parents it is never
the same in any two individuals. There will
always be a large amount of mixing and
matching of the base pairs and genes and
chromosomes between couples who produce
offspring. Each new mating is unique, and even
identical twins will exhibit subtle variations.
The Starchild’s Mitochondrial DNA
We took the Starchild to Trace Genetics
in Davis, California, in the middle of 2003. The
first thing we discovered was how hard and
dense its bone was. The geneticists had to
struggle to cut it with a high-speed Dremel
blade that sawed through normal human bone
with relative ease. The next step was to dissolve
a shard of the Starchild’s bone in a standard
solvent called EDTA. It was put into a test tube
in a rocker arm, and after one week it should
have been dissolved. It wasn’t, not even slightly.
A powerful detergent had to be added to break it
down, something never needed with normal
human bone.
Once the Starchild’s DNA was
recoverable, the geneticists went through their
processes with it. They found the DNA was well
preserved and quite easy to recover from the
solution it was dissolved in. Its 900 years buried
in a mine tunnel had left it in almost pristine
condition. It was never oxidized by a scorching
sun, or leached by rainwater soaking it. It was
much like a relatively fresh burial, as opposed to
what the geneticists normally had to deal with.
(Our geneticists had worked on the famous
Kennewick Man, the 9,000-year-old skeleton
discovered in the U.S. in 1996. They found that
all of its DNA was hopelessly degraded by
exposure to the elements.)
The Starchild’s mitochondrial DNA was
easily recovered and came up bright and clear in
the gel sheets used to reveal its makeup. It
turned out to have a human mother from what is
known as Haplogroup C, which is a type of
Amerindian common to both North and South
America. Nothing unusual about it. However,
this discovery ruled out a couple of key
assumptions we had made about the Starchild
and its genetic heritage.
We knew the Starchild died 900 years
earlier and seemed to be buried by a human
female who then lay down beside its grave and
committed suicide. Their skeletons were found
and their skulls recovered by a girl exploring a
mine tunnel in Mexico around 1930. We made
the natural assumption that the human female
had a very close relationship to it, probably its
mother, whether natural or adoptive. We could
think of no other relationship they might have
had that would warrant the ultimate sacrifice of
her own life.
When the human female’s DNA was
recovered and her mitochondrial DNA was
tested, it was found to be from Haplogroup A,
another common type of Amerindian. That
meant the Starchild and the woman who chose
to commit suicide and die beside it were not
genetically related. Perhaps she was an adoptive
mother, or a close friend or caretaker, or lover,
or even its partner in life. We had no way to
answer those questions, or any number of
others.
Finding out that the Starchild had a
human mother also forced us to drop the idea
that it might be a pure “grey” alien. Now the
most we could assume was that it might be a
hybrid with a human mother and an alien father.
This led to another assumption. If it was a
human-alien hybrid, it was in all likelihood the
result of genetic engineering rather than a
normal sexual union.
If such a program is occurring now, then

Following the revelations of the
Starchild’s mitochondrial DNA would be the
analysis of its nuclear DNA, which could easily
be the end of the line for us. Five years of effort
would be riding on this one make-or break test.
With the Starchild’s mother unquestionably a
typical Amerindian, if the father’s DNA showed
up in the search for the nuclear DNA we would
close our case. The Starchild would have two
human parents and that would be the end of it.
No matter how unusual its physiological traits
might be, if its genes showed two human
parents, then turn out the lights, the party’s over.
The Starchild’s Nuclear DNA
To secure the recovery of DNA in 2003,
geneticists had only one technique available—
the use of “primers.” Primers were previously
coded strings of base pairs that were common to
all humans. Those strings could go on for
hundreds or a few thousand base pairs, and were
like keys that would fit precisely into locks. The
soup of dissolved DNA could be imagined as an
accumulation of those locks. The primer keys
would be swirled into the soup to find their
specific corollary locks, and when they did that,
those lock-and-key alignments could then be
extracted and analyzed by putting them into
“gel sheets.” Everyone has seen those small
bars that are created to represent someone’s

When the Starchild’s nuclear DNA was
filled with primer keys, those keys went looking
for locks that were combinations of both its
mother and father. By that point those of us
inside the Starchild Project were soundly rattled
by the mother turning out to be human. Half of
what we were betting—that it might be a pure
grey alien—was now off the table. So with
baited breath we awaited the first test result . . .
and it was nothing, nada, no recovery. Not even
a whisper of a recovery, which could mean one
of two things: (1) the Starchild’s nuclear DNA
was too degraded to permit a recovery; or (2)
the recovery couldn’t occur because the father
was not entirely human.
We felt we could rule out the first
possibility based on the ease with which the
human’s mitochondrial DNA and nuclear DNA
had been recovered. Her locks-and-keys were
bright and clear in her gel sheets, indicating she
hadn’t degraded much, which—as noted
earlier—was logical for bones entombed in a
mine tunnel for 900 years. No wind, no rain, no
sun bleaching. And the same was true for the
Starchild. Its mitochondrial DNA had come up
very easily on the first attempt to recover it. So
the odds had suddenly swung in our direction. If

with delusions of godhood.
Emmerich is prepping his new disaster
movie 2012 for release on Friday. This time he's
basing his world-smashing destruction on a
bunch of theories floating around the
blogosphere and the nutosphere that state that
the world will end sometime during late 2012,
around the time of the winter solstice in the
Northern Hemisphere.
So, in light of Emmerich's new plot to
destroy the world, and with tinfoil hats firmly in
place, we thought it'd be worthwhile to look
over 15 end-of-the-world prophecies from the
past 1800 years or so and see how they turned
out. (Emmerich's 2012 opened Nov. 13,
ensuring at minimum three years of box office

million bonus.

Letter to American Teachers of History.
Cranking out analysis of cultural trends that
would do Hari Seldon proud, he uses a model
based on the dissipation of energy to figure out
the four stages of human civilization—the
religious, the mechanical, the electrical and the
ethereal—and nails with certainty that the end
will come in 1921. No calculations are made on
the dissipation of energy expended by the
disseminating of crackpot theories, which may
have thrown off Adams' results.

Jupiter Effect"
Prophet: John Gribbin and Stephen Plagemann
Details: In their best-selling 1974 book The
Jupiter Effect, respected astronomer Gribbin
and his co-author Plagemann predict that the
March 10, 1982, alignment of seven planets
would lead to global upheavals that would be
the envy of Irwin Allen, with the San Andreas
fault flattening California, massive storms, a
change in the speed of Earth's rotation, etc.
Gribbin eventually recants, maybe after
thinking about what happened to Porta. The
high tide on the predicted doomsday does turn
out to be a less-than-tsunami-like .04

astronomer Dennis Rawlins tells The New York
Times that day that any undue gravitational pull

decides that 1967 is more accurate. So, that
would place 2007 as the end of the world.

Prophet: Shoko Asahara
Details: In 1987, Chizuo Matsumoto renames
himself Shoko Asahara and mashes together

Christianity, science fiction, Hinduism, anime
and yoga into Aum Shinrikyo ("Supreme
Truth"), an Armageddon-focused cult based in
Japan, with tens of thousands of members
worldwide. After proclaiming himself a new
Ends: Christ, traveling to the year 2006 and talking to
the survivors of World War III (so he claims),
Asahara preps his followers for a Final War
against the enemies of Japan. After a few
botched attempts at initiating germ warfare,

and injuring thousands in March 1995. After an
eight-year trial, Asahara is convicted and
sentenced to death.

Prophet: Nostradamus
Details: Nostradamus, writing in 1555, predicts
the end of the world for the year 1999. Maybe.
Or he predicts a meteor strike that will kill
millions and throw the world into political
chaos. Maybe. Or it could be an asteroid.
Maybe. Or it could be a UFO with attendant
alien invasion. Maybe. Or it could be, as some
believe, that he predicts the plane crash that kills
John F. Kennedy Jr. Maybe. It all depends on
how you choose to read his murky and cryptic
predictions. Personally, I choose to believe that
he refers to the success of Michael Bay's
Armageddon, which was released on July 1,
1998, and was just one year off in his forecast.

Isn’t it the government’s job to keep the

There are many objectives of
government, but they do not include keeping the
population at ease. My experience is that
sometimes parts of the government do just the
opposite, as in the frequent references to various
terrorist threats or warnings about driving
accidents on long holiday weekends, which are
no more dangerous than any other time. There is
a long history of associating bad things with
political opponents (older readers will
remember the “missile gap” in the 1960
election, younger ones will note the many
current references to who is or is not keeping
the U.S. safe from terrorists). Further, social
scientists have pointed out that many of our
concepts of public panic are the product of
Hollywood, while in the real world people have
a good record of helping each other in a time of
danger. I think everyone also recognizes that
keeping bad news secret usually backfires,
making the issue even worse when the facts
finally come out. And in the case of Nibiru,
these facts would come out very soon indeed.
Even if they wanted to, the government
could not keep Nibiru a secret. If it were real, it
would be tracked by thousands of astronomers,
amateurs as well a professional. These
astronomers are spread all over the world. I
know the astronomy community, and these
scientists would not keep a secret even if
ordered to. You just can’t hide a planet on its
way to the inner solar system!
9. Why does the Mayan calendar say the
world will end in 2012? I have heard that
they have been pretty accurate in the past
with other planetary predictions. How can

developed a very complex calendar. Ancient
calendars are interesting to historians, but of
they cannot match the ability we have today to
keep track of time, or the precision of the
calendars currently in use. The main point,
however, is that calendars, whether
contemporary or ancient, cannot predict the
future of our planet or warn of things to happen
on a specific date such as 2012.
I note that my desk calendar ends much
sooner, on December 31 2009, but I do not
interpret this as a prediction of Armageddon. It
is just the beginning of a new year.

doesn’t cause any harm to life on Earth. A
magnetic reversal is very unlikely to happen in
the next few millennia, anyway. But they falsely
claim that a magnetic reversal is coming soon
(in 2012) and that this is the same as, or will
trigger, a reversal of rotational poles. The
bottom line is: (a) Rotation direction and
magnetic polarity are not related. (b) There is no
reason to expect a reversal of magnetic polarity
any time soon, or to anticipate any bad effects
on life when it does eventually happen. © A
sudden shift in rotational pole with disastrous
consequences is impossible. Also, none of this
has anything to do with the galactic equator or
any of the other nonsense about alignments that
appears on many of the conspiracy theory
websites.
11. When most of the planets align in 2012
and planet Earth is in the center of the Milky
Way, what will the effects of this be on planet
Earth? Could it cause a pole shift, and if so
what could we expect?
There is no planet alignment in 2012 or
any other time in the next several decades. As to
the Earth being in the center of the Milky Way,
I don’t know what this phrase means. If you are
referring to the Milky Way Galaxy, we are
rather far toward the edge of this spiral galaxy,
some 30,000 light years from the center. We
circle the galactic center in a period of 225-250
million years, always keeping approximately
the same distance. Concerning a pole shift, I
also don’t know what this means. If it means
some sudden change in the position of the pole
(that is, the rotation axis of the Earth), then that
is impossible, as noted in the answer to
Question 10. What many websites do discuss is
the alignment of the Earth and Sun with the
center of the Milky Way in the constellation of
Sagittarius. This happens every December, with
no bad consequences, and there is no reason to
expect 2012 to be different from any other year.
12. When the sun and the Earth line up on
the galactic plane at the same time with the
black whole being in the center couldn’t that
cause something to happen, due to the fact
that the black hole has such a strong
gravitational pull.
There is a giant black hole in the center
of our Milky Way galaxy, and like any
concentration of mass it exerts gravitational
force on the rest of the Galaxy. However, the
galactic center is very far away, approximately
30,000 light years, so it has negligible effects on
the solar system or the Earth. There are no
special forces from the galactic plane or the
galactic center. The only important force that
acts on the Earth is the gravitation of the Sun
and Moon. As far as the influence of the galactic
plane, there is nothing special about this
location. The last time the Earth was in the
galactic plane was several million years ago.
Claims that we are about to cross the galactic
plane are untrue.
13. I am scared about the fact that the Earth
will enter the Dark Rift in the Milky Way.
What will this do? Will the Earth be
swallowed up?
The “dark rift” is a popular name for the
broad and diffuse dust clouds in the inner arm of
the Milky Way Galaxy, which block our view of
the galactic center. The entire “galactic
alignment” scare is pretty crazy. Late in
December the Sun is always approximately in
the direction of the center of the Galaxy as seen
from the Earth, but so what? Apparently the
con-men who are trying to scare you have
decided to use these meaningless phrases about
“alignments” and the “dark rift” and “photon
belt” precisely because they are not understood
by the public. It is too bad, but there is no law
against lying on the Internet or anywhere else
except in a court of law. As far as the safety of
the Earth is concerned, the important threats are
from global warming and loss of biological
diversity, and perhaps someday from collision
with an asteroid or comet, not the
pseudoscientific claims about 2012.

14. I have heard that the Earth’s magnetic field
will flip in 2012 just when the strongest level of
solar storms in history is predicted to take
place. Will this kill us or destroy our
civilization?
Near solar maximum (which happens
every 11 years approximately), there are many
more solar flares and coronal mass ejections than
near solar minimum. Flares and mass ejections are
no danger for humans or other life on Earth. They
could endanger astronauts in deep space or on the
Moon, and this is something that NASA must
learn to deal with, but it is not a problem for you
or me. Large outbursts can interrupt radio
transmission, cause bright displays of the aurora
(Northern and Southern Lights), and damage the
electronics of some satellites in space. Today
many satellites are designed to deal with this
possibility, for example by switching off some of
their more delicate circuits and going into a “safe”
mode for a few hours. In extreme cases solar
activity can also disrupt electrical transmissions
on the ground, possibly leading to electrical
blackouts, but this is rare.
The last solar maximum occurred in 2001,
so the next one was predicted for around 2012, 11
years later. However, the most recent solar
minimum was unusual, with a period of a couple
of years with almost no sunspots or other
indications of solar activity, so scientists now
guess that the next maximum will be delayed,
perhaps to 2013. However, the details of the solar
cycle remain basically unpredictable.
You are correct that the Earth’s magnetic
field protects us by creating a large region in
space, called the Earth’s magnetosphere, within
which most of the material ejected from the Sun is
captured or deflected, but there is no reason to
expect a reversal of magnetic polarity any time
soon. These magnetic reversals happen only once
in 400,000 years on average.
15. I am confused about a report on the Fox
News website that in 2012 a “Powerful Solar
Storm Could Shut Down U.S. for Months”.
They referred to a report from the National
Academy of Sciences that was commissioned
and paid for by NASA. If nothing is going to
happen as a result of the event in 2012, why
would NASA allow such nonsense to be
reported?
NASA is pleased with the National
Research Council report on heliophysics. As you
note, this report includes a worst-case analysis of
what could happen today if there were a repetition
of the biggest solar storm ever recorded (in 1859).
The problem is the way such information can be
used out of context. There is no reason to expect
such a large solar storm in the near future,
certainly not in 2012 specifically. Your reference
to “the event in 2012” illustrates this problem.
There is no prediction of an “event in 2012”. We
don’t even know if the next solar maximum will
take place in that year. The whole 2012 disaster
scenario is a hoax, fueled by ads for the
Hollywood science-fiction disaster film “2012”. I
can only hope that most people are able to
distinguish Hollywood film plots from reality.
16. All my school friends are telling me that we
are all going to die in the year 2012 due to a
meteor hitting earth. Is this true?
Your friends are wrong. The Earth has
always been subject to impacts by comets and
asteroids, although big hits are very rare. The last
big impact was 65 million years ago, and that led
to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Today NASA
astronomers are carrying out a survey called the
Spaceguard Survey to find any large near-Earth
asteroids long before they hit. We have already
determined that there are no threatening asteroids
as large as the one that killed the dinosaurs. All
this work is done openly with the discoveries
posted every day on the NASA NEO Program
Office website (neo.jpl.nasa.gov), so you can see
for yourself that nothing is predicted to hit in
2012.
17. If Nibiru is a hoax, why doesn’t NASA issue
a denial? How can you permit these stores to
circulate and frighten people? Why doesn’t the
U.S. government do something about it!
If you go to the NASA home page,
nasa.gov, you will see many stories that expose
the Nibiru-2012 hoax. Try searching nasa.com
under “Nibiru” or “2012”. There is not much more
that NASA can do. These hoaxes have nothing to
do with NASA and are not based on NASA data,
so we as an agency are not directly involved. But
scientists, both within NASA and outside,
recognize that this hoax with its effort to frighten
people is a distraction from more important
science concerns, such as global warming and loss
of biological diversity. We live in a country where
there is freedom of speech, and that includes
freedom to lie. You should be glad there are no
censors. But if you will just use common sense I
am sure you can recognize the lies. As we
approach 2012, the lies will be come even more
obvious.
18. Can you prove to me that Nibiru is a hoax?
There are so many reports that something
terrible will happen in 2012. I need proof
because the government and NASA are
keeping so much from us.
It is not logical to ask for proof that the
2012 doomsday is a hoax. Your questions should
be to the doomsday advocates to prove that what
they are saying is true, not to NASA to prove it is
false. If someone claimed on the Internet that
there were 50-foot tall purple elephants walking
through Cleveland, would anyone expect NASA
to prove this wrong? The burden of proof falls on
those who make wild claims. Remember the
often-quoted comment from Carl Sagan that
extraordinary claims demand extraordinary levels
of evidence if they are to be believed.
However, I think that astronomers have
reached the point where we can offer extremely
strong arguments that Nibiru does not exist. A
large planet (or a brown dwarf) in our solar system
would have been known to astronomers for many
years, both indirectly from its gravitational
perturbations on other objects and by direct
detection in the infrared. The NASA Infrared
Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) carried out the first
all-sky survey in 1983, and several subsequent
surveys would also have seen Nibiru if it were
there. Further, if a large mass passed through the
inner solar system every 3600 years, we would see
its disruptive effects on the orbits of the inner
planets, and we don’t.
You don’t need to take my word for it. Just
use common sense. Have you seen Nibiru? In
2008 many websites said it would be visible to the

naked eye in spring 2009. If a large planet or
brown dwarf were headed for the inner solar
system in 2012, it would already be tracked by
hundreds of thousands of astronomers,
professional and amateur, all over the world. Do
you know any amateur astronomers who are
watching it? Have you seen any photos or
discussion of it in the big popular astronomy
magazines like Sky & Telescope? Just think about
it. No one could hide Nibiru if it existed.
19. What about the scary ads for the new film
2012? They tell us to look at these Internet sites to
verify the doomsday threat.
The pseudoscientific claims about Nibiru
and a doomsday in 2012, together with distrust of
the government, are being amplified by publicity
for the new film from Columbia Pictures titled
2012, to be released in November 2009. The
film’s trailer, appearing in theaters and on their
website , shows a tidal wave breaking over the
Himalayas, with only the following words: “How
would the governments of our planet prepare 6
billion people for the end of the world? [long
pause] They wouldn’t. [long pause] Find out the
Truth. Google search 2012”.
The film publicity includes creation of a
faux scientific website
(www.instituteforhumancontinuity.org/) for “The
Institute for Human Continuity”, which is entirely
fictitious. According to this website, the IHC is
dedicated to scientific research and public
preparedness. Its mission is the survival of
mankind. The website explains that the Institute
was founded 1978 by international leaders of
government, business, and science. They say that
in 2004, IHC scientists confirmed with 94%
certainty that the world would be destroyed in
2012. This website encourages people to register
for a lottery to select those who will be saved; a
colleague submitted the name of her cat, which
was accepted. I learned from Wikipedia that
creating this sort of fake website is a new
advertising technique called “Viral Marketing”,
by analogy with computer viruses.
20. Is it possible that the influx of questions you
describe is part of some kind of campaign for a
book or movie, in the hopes that the volume of
denials is taken as more “evidence” that there
is a conspiracy?
I ask myself the same questions every day,
as the volume of mail I receive about Nibiru
(along with various alignments and pole shifts)
keeps increasing — now more than 20 per week.
Clearly there is money to be made from people’s
fear about an approaching doomsday. Some of
this hype is apparently advertising for the science
fiction disaster movie 2012 (see Question 19).
Many websites are selling books and tapes about
Nibiru or even “survival kits”. It is all very sad,
that with so many real issues (such as global
warming and financial collapse) people are being
taken in by these lies. In the final chapter of a new
astronomy book (The Hunt for Planet X) by
Govert Shilling, he writes: “There is plenty to do
for the debunkers – the archaeologists and
astronomers who take a long and skeptical look at
the tidal wave of Nibiru nonsense and explain
with scientific precision what is wrong with this
cosmic fairy-tale. They will have their work cut
out in the next few years. And on December 22,
2012 there will be a new pseudoscientific cock-
and-bull story doing the rounds and the whole
circus will start all over again.

Nutshell

Ancient texts do not discuss the existence of a
tenth planet.
Zechariah Sitchin bases his entire theory
of the existence of a tenth planet on ancient
texts, including Sumerian and biblical writings.
However, he is known to misinterpret
Sumerian, sometimes grossly. His key finding is
based on a seal that shows a diagram that looks
like the solar system, with the Sun at the center.
It appears to have eleven planets around it.
Since Sumerians counted the Sun and Moon as
planets, Sitchin says the extra one must be some
unknown planet. He also says it has aliens on it
who communicated with the ancient Sumerians.
But there are two major problems with this.
Well, three, if you count having alien visitations
as a problem (and I certainly do). But ignoring
that, there are still two biggies. Sitchin claims
that the picture shows Uranus, Neptune and
Pluto. But the Sumerians didn't have telescopes,
and therefore could only have known of them if
aliens told them about their existence. But if
aliens told them about those planets, why not
about the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, or
Saturn's rings? The seal doesn't show any of
these features. And the Sumerians thought the
Moon and Sun were planets, when they aren't.
Certainly aliens would know that the Sun and
Moon are not planets! Sitchin is picking and
choosing things in the picture to support his
arguments, and ignoring things that don't
support it. That isn't science, it's fantasy. It's also
wrong.
Worse, his interpretation of the picture is
wrong. The Sumerians have an unambiguous
symbol for the Sun: a circle with four triangles
around it like rays, and squiggly lines between
the triangles. That is emphatically not the
symbol in the seal. The symbol used is that of a
bright star, but not the Sun. So even Sitchin's
basic premise is wrong. Michael Heiser, a
Sumerian scholar, outlines all this on his
website.
Conclusion: Sitchin's ideas are wrong,
and so there is no reason to even introduce the
idea of a tenth planet that passes by the Earth.
There is no astronomical indication of the
existence of another large planet in the inner
solar system.
In my opinion, this is the biggest
problem with the Planet X myth. Simply put:
where is it? We don't see it optically, and we
don't see any effects gravitationally.
Look at Jupiter. Literally! It's about ten
times the diameter of the Earth, and it's on
average about 750 million kilometers (450
million miles) away. It is easily visible to the
naked eye, and in fact is usually the fourth or
fifth brightest object in the sky (the Sun, Moon,
and Venus are brighter, and Mars can sometimes
be brighter than Jupiter).
Yet, for Planet X to be here in less then
a decade, it can't be farther than a billion or so
kilometers away. Even at that distance, it would
be one of the brightest objects in the sky. Even
if it were too faint to be seen with the naked eye,
it would still be seen easily even if it were
billions of kilometers away. Remember, tiny
Pluto is 5 billion kilometers out, and can be
easily detected using modern equipment, and
Pluto is way smaller than Planet X is supposed
to be. There is simply no way a big planet so
close to Earth could have escaped astronomers'
detection-- even amateur astronomers, who
even Lieder and Hazlewood must realize have
no reason to lie-- all these decades.
Also, a giant planet has giant gravity.
Neptune was discovered because of its
gravitational effects on Saturn and Uranus.
Planet X, if it were anywhere near the inner
solar system (and in truth, even a long way out),
would pull on those planets. This pull would
affect their orbits, and we'd see that. We don't.
Some of the Planet X proponents talk about how
the outer planets' orbits are indeed affected, but
they are relying on very old data. In fact, the
planets are exactly where they should be given
the nine planets we know about.
A lot of PXPs talk about a couple of
scientific papers published which talk about
perturbations in comet orbits indicating a
possible tenth planet. I have read both papers,
and found them to be interesting, but unlikely.
They are more speculation than hard science, in
my opinion. But even if they are correct, they
would indicate a planet that is way, way farther
out than Hazlewood and Lieder claim for Planet
X, and in fact would indicate there is no massive
planet closer to the inner solar system. As usual,
by pointing out scientific evidence they think
supports their position, the PXPs are actually
highlighting evidence against them.
Another favorite claim of Mark
Hazlewood is that NASA found the tenth planet
back in 1983, and even announced it. This is
patently untrue. What really happened was that
a satellite used to make astronomical
observations in infrared light found several
objects that were previously unidentified.
During a press conference, the astronomers
made a list of potential sources, including (but
not limited to) a tenth planet. Of course, the
headline in the Washington Post zeroed in on
the planet possibility, but science is generally
not done by headlines. Sure enough, follow-up
observations made later showed clearly that
most of the objects were distant galaxies, and
another was a gas cloud in our own Galaxy. No
planet.
Of course, Hazlewood and his ilk claim
that NASA got wise and quickly covered up the
discovery of the tenth planet, but let's face it,
that claim is pretty dumb. This was a NASA
press conference in the first place, and if they
were this ultra-competent super-secret
organization that Hazlewood makes them out to
be, or even if they were middling-competent
bureaucrats, the press conference wouldn't have
been held in the first place! And at the very
least, the astronomers involved would have
been briefed not to reveal anything secret. The
PXPs want it both ways: they want NASA to be
so good they can change journal articles, web
pages, astronomical catalogs and more with
iron-clad authority, but so bumbling they
couldn't keep two astronomers and a DC
reporter shut up. Puhleeze!

Conclusion: Planet X has no physical
effects, has never been seen, and therefore
doesn't exist.
The Sun is not acting in any way abnormally.
The PXPs love to scream every time the
Sun undergoes an eruption, whether it's a flare
or coronal mass ejection (or CME for short).
They say that the peak in the 11 year solar cycle
was two to three years ago, and therefore the
Sun should be quiet now. Any eruption is
therefore evidence of effects from Planet X.
This is wrong. The Sun did indeed peak
in the year 2000, but these peaks are not sudden;
they grow and fade slowly, over years. In fact,
each peak actually has two sub-peaks; solar
activity rises, then declines, then rises again a
year or so later, as can be seen in the plot shown
(click on it to bring up a bigger version of the
image). We are just now finishing up the second
peak, and as you can see we should expect
plenty of activity on the Sun. I talked to a couple
of solar astronomers, and they both told me that
the flares and CMEs in the second peak tend to
be more violent than in the first, so we actually
expect more energetic activity in the second
peak, that is, now.
The PXPs neglect to mention the history
of the Sun, and just want you to think about
what's happening right now. By doing that, it
makes it seem like the Sun is undergoing all
sorts of undulations, when in fact it's doing
exactly what is expected of it. The Sun is in no
way acting abnormally, despite their claims.
Conclusion: the Sun is acting normally,
and its behavior does not support the existence
of Planet X.
There are not more earthquakes than
normal.
This claim is similar to the one about the
Sun. The PXPs say that earthquakes are on the
rise, which indicates effects by Planet X. Every
time there is a large earthquake, the PXPs say
this is evidence for Planet X.
This is wrong.
If Planet X is nearly here, then you'd
expect to see an increase of major earthquake
activity over time, with 2002 having the most.
Surprise! It doesn't. In fact, 2002 is usually
average or even below average in the number of
major earthquakes for a given magnitude that
occurred.
You may notice that the actual total
number of earthquakes does appear to increase
with time, but that is not because there are more
earthquakes. It's because we're getting better at
detecting them! As instruments become more
sensitive, more earthquakes are detected. Note
that the increase is mostly in the number of
small quakes, which are usually harder to
detect. Better instrumentation naturally detects
smaller quakes more easily, increasing the total
number found without changing the number of
big quakes found, because those are easy to
detect and we catch them all with less sensitive
equipment. Supporting this is the last line of the
graph, which shows only a few very weak
earthquakes in the 0-1 range.

There were two big earthquakes in
January 2003, both over 7 on the Richter scale.
The PXPs went nuts about them. But look at the
plot! Two magnitude 7 earthquakes in one
month means you'd expect 24 in a year, right?
Well, you can see that 24 magnitude 7
earthquakes per year is just about right given the
earthquake history. So once again, by bringing
this data to everyone's attention, the Planet X
people are shooting themselves in the foot.
Conclusion: there no more earthquakes
than usual, and therefore earthquakes cannot be
used to support the existence of Planet X.
There has been a lot of weird weather lately.
Another big claim is that there has been
a lot of unusual weather going on; tornadoes,
droughts, storms, etc. Like earthquakes and
solar flares, every time it rains it seems like it
must be due to Planet X.
First off, surprise! The weather isn't all
that weird. We are coming off of an El Nino,
which is a weather pattern that disrupts climates
across the world. Also, we are now into
springtime, when things like tornadoes are
common. Seeing tornadoes in Texas and
Oklahoma is not only not unusual, but is
expected!
There have been some records broken
this year, but there are weather records broken
every year. This is exactly the same sort of bad
logic used in the earthquake argument, and is
just as wrong. Even a cursory web search yields
lots of pages about the odd weather we get as El
Nino departs.
And even if it were true, how could the
weather possibly be to tied to an incoming
planet? If you assume electromagnetic forces,
we'd see huge changes in our aurora before we'd
see changes in the weather, and we see no such
changes. If it were gravitational, then there
would be countless other, far larger effects.
Long before the weather were disrupted, we'd
see changes in the Moon's orbit that were so big
they would be unmistakable. They would
certainly throw off the timings of eclipses, and
we'll see on May 15th that there will be a lunar
eclipse right on schedule.
Conclusion: the weather isn't any
weirder than it usually is at the end of an El
Nino, so the claims of weird weather are wrong.
Brown dwarfs are not at all the way Planet X
people describe.
A brown dwarf is an object that is
something bigger than a planet, but smaller than
a star. An object with more than about 0.077
times the Sun's mass (about 80 times Jupiter's
mass) will ignite nuclear fusion in the core,
making it a full-blown star. The lower mass
limit is somewhat less clear, but we can safely
say that Jupiter is below it. Even if we call
Jupiter a brown dwarf, it is still far larger than
what Nancy Lieder and Mark Hazlewood say is
the mass and diameter of Planet X. Nancy says
it's 4 times the radius of Earth (Jupiter is 11
times Earth's radius) and about 20 times as
massive (Jupiter is 310 times as massive as the
Earth). Hazlewood's claims are similar. Neither
of them describe anything even close to a brown
dwarf.
Also, even an old, dim brown dwarf puts
out light. A typical dim brown dwarf would still
be a very bright object if it were anywhere near
the inner solar system, or even located way out
beyond Pluto. I even show my math! Remember
too that a brown dwarf will still reflect sunlight
(like Jupiter and the other planets do), making it
even brighter. So if Planet X were a brown
dwarf, it would have been obvious in the sky
years ago.
Using the term to describe Planet X is
simply wrong. I suspect they might use the term
to sound more scientific, but again, as always,
they wind up making themselves look foolish.
Conclusion: Nancy Lieder and Mark
Hazlewood do not understand brown dwarfs at
all, and saying Planet X is a brown dwarf is
actually further evidence that they don't know
what they are talking about, and that Planet X
doesn't exist.
Observatories are not being closed
suspiciously.
Many of the PXPs (notably Mr.
Hazlewood) have been claiming that
observatories around the world are being closed
"suspiciously" (ever noticed how nothing can
just happen in a conspiracy theory?). They
claim to have a long list of them, though I have
yet to see them actually post such a list. They do
mention such observatories as Griffith in Los
Angeles. Why are they closing? Because, claim
the PXPs, they don't want the public to see
Planet X through these observatories. If the
public demands to see this planet through the
powerful telescopes, then the jig, as they say, is
up. So the government is closing them down.
But this makes no sense whatsoever. First, as I
have shown, Planet X, if it existed, would be a
pretty bright object. If we believe Nancy Lieder,
then it should be so bright it would be visible
even if you wear sunglasses. Mark Hazlewood
claims it's still far away, but even if it were years
away, it would be easily spotted in a telescope
of very modest size; certainly in the range of
thousands of amateur instruments. So closing
public observatories makes no sense.
Moreover, the only way to keep this
quiet would be to close all telescopes with
public access. Every single one. Yet there are
hundreds of observatories still open. I recently
used some 'scopes at the Buehler Observatory in
Fort Lauderdale, for example, when it was open
for public night. Chabot Space and Science
Center in Oakland, California, has several
telescopes the public can use. The list goes on
for hundreds of observatories that are not only
open, but actively showing the skies to the
public.
I expect PXPs will then claim that the
observatories remaining open simply won't
show Planet X to the public. Then why close
any at all? Again, it makes no sense. Either all
observatories get closed, or none does. They
might claim that only observatories with big
enough 'scopes were shut down, but that's not

true. Plenty of observatories with pretty big
'scopes remain open.
Conclusion: Observatories are indeed
closing, but only for renovation. Plenty of
observatories with public access and large
telescopes remain open. Therefore there is no
government conspiracy to close telescopes
down to prevent people from seeing Planet X.
I am not a government disinformation agent.
Just about every purveyor of Planet X
has said at some time that I am a liar, or
deluded, or a paid NASA or NSA or CIA
disinformation agent. James McCanney told a
bare-faced lie on the radio, saying I have a
"mansion" and a "luxurious office" (it's a lie
because he doesn't know what kind of home or
office I have, therefore he knows he cannot
make any conclusions about them, and therefore
he lied). I laughed out loud when I first heard
him say this; I was sitting in my "luxurious"
10x12 foot office that I shared with a coworker.
It was so cramped we couldn't both push our
chairs back at the same time.
The assertion that I am some kind of
spook is silly. Think about it: I am a
professional astronomer, with a traceable
history of doing relatively good science (I have
a dozen or so journal articles with my name on
them). How much money do you think I could
make if I started a cult about Planet X? I could
make as much money just as easily by writing a
book and getting on talk shows. I could name
my price to Fox TV. So there is no monetary
incentive for me to debunk Planet X, unless I
truly believe it isn't real. If you think the
government would give me more money than
Fox TV, then you are beyond any logic I can
provide you.
Ironically, and in fact, all the Planet X
purveyors are known liars, or at least deceptive.
Since they have no evidence I am a
disinformation agent, and yet they still call me
that, they are knowingly lying. They may
believe it's true, but they have no evidence of it,
and so cannot honestly state that claim as truth.
Hazlewood has claimed on many
occasions that I spend time fighting him
because he is "on to something". That's a silly
statement. Imagine yelling a racial slur at
someone on the street. Don't you think they
would get angry, and perhaps even argue about
it? Wouldn't you, if someone attacked
something you loved for no reason and without
any merit to their arguments?
The claims that I am deluded are just as
silly. I actually have evidence that what I say is
correct, and also show exactly where Lieder and
the others are wrong. All they can do against me
is cry about a government conspiracy with no
evidence whatsoever. So do you agree with
someone with lots of evidence, or someone with
none whatsoever, just hearsay, deception, and/or
outright lies?
Conclusion: There is no evidence that I
am anything but who I say I am: a professional
astronomer who loves astronomy, and doesn't
like hearing the Planet X purveyors misleading
others about it. Slurs (and let's face it, slander)
against me do not support the existence of
Planet X.

The Great 2012
Doomsday Scare
This guest article on 2012 was written
by E. C. Krupp, Director of Griffith
Observatory in Los Angeles and is

The year 2012 is acting like a badly
behaved celebrity. Frightful rumors and gossip
are spreading. Already more than a half dozen
books are marketing, to eager fans,
astronomical fears about 2012 End Times.
Opening in theaters on Friday, Nov. 13, will be
2012, a $200-million disaster movie that seems
designed to break all records for disaster
spectacles -- with cracking continents, plunging
asteroids, burning cities, and a tsunami
throwing an aircraft carrier through the White
House. The movie's ominous slogan: "Find out
the truth." Two other major movies about the
2012 doomsday are also reported to be in the
works.
Anyone who cruises the internet or all-
night talk radio knows why. The ancient Maya
of Mexico and Guatemala kept a calendar that is
about to roll up the red carpet of time, swing the
solar system into transcendental alignment with
the heart of the Milky Way, and turn Earth into
a bowling pin for a rogue planet heading down
our alley for a strike.
None of it is true. People you know,
however, are likely becoming a bit afraid that
modern astronomy and Maya secrets are indeed
conspiring to bring our doom. If people know
you’re an astronomer, they will soon be asking
you all about it.
Here is what you need to know.
Birth of a Notion
We"ve had similar scares in the recent
past, but none quite like this. The last time the
world got all worked up over the mystical
turning of a calendar was the false Millennium
of Jan. 1, 2000. Never mind the actual Y2K
computer-date bug. True-believer authors (and
their imitators) published scary and/or hopeful
books about the moment's prophetic potential to
catch an immense cosmic wave and change
everything for either good or ill. Borrowing a
forecast from Nostradamus, the 16th-century
French riddler, author Charles Berlitz predicted
catastrophe in his 1981 book Doomsday 1999.
Berlitz (fresh off books on Atlantis and the
Bermuda Triangle), warned that 1999 could
inflict flood, famine, pollution and a shift of
Earth's magnetic poles. He also spotlighted the
planetary alignment of May 5, 2000, and
warned that it could bring solar flares, severe
earthquakes, "land changes" and "seismic
explosions."
In the 1990s an entire "Earth Changes"
movement swelled into being as the end of the
century neared, with all sorts of Millennial
expectations -- earthquakes, plagues, polar axis
shifts, continents sliding into the sea, Atlantis
rising and more. In England, the Sun tabloid

predicted a "marvelous millennium of joy,
peace, prosperity."
When Jan. 1, 2000, came and went with
nothing worse than ski-lift passes printing the
date as 1900, the focus shifted to "5/5/2000"
several months later. Most believers in the
power of planetary alignments forgot the failure
of earlier lineups to induce disaster. The "Jupiter
Effect" cataclysm predicted for March 10, 1982
(named for the 1974 book about it by John
Gribbin and Stephen Plagemann) commanded
headlines but never materialized.
Throughout history, end-of-the-world
movements missing their mark number in the
"hundreds of thousands at the very least, says
Richard Landes, historian at Boston University
and director of its Center for Millennial Studies.
But people eager for the world to end are not to
be denied, and this time, of course, all will be
different.
The Rollover
What exactly is the Maya calendar about
to do? On Dec. 21, 2012, it will display the
equivalent of a string of zeros, like the odometer
turning over on your car, with the close of
something like a millennium. In Maya
calendrics, however, it's not the end of a
thousand years. It's the end of Baktun 13. The
Maya calendar was based on multiple cycles of
time, and the baktun was one of them. A baktun
is 144,000 days: a little more than 394 years.
Scholars have deciphered how the Maya
calendar worked from historical texts and
ancient inscriptions, and they have accurately
correlated so-called Maya Long Count dates
with the equivalent dates in our calendar. Just as
we number our years counting from a
historically and culturally significant event (the
presumed birth year of Christ), Maya times
were numbered from a date endowed with
religious and cosmic significance: the creation
date of the present world order. A Long Count
date is the tally of days from that mythic startup.
Most experts think the start point corresponds to
Aug. 11, 3114 B.C.
Most of the Maya calendar intervals
accumulate as multiples of 20. An interval of
7,200 days (360 × 20) was known as a katun. It
takes 20 katuns to complete a baktun (20 ×
7,200 = 144,000 days). Although some ancient
inscriptions turn 13 baktuns into an important
reset milestone, others imply that the calendar
simply keeps running. For instance, it takes 20
baktuns to make a pictun.
No one paid much attention to the end of
Baktun 13 until fairly recently. In 1975 Frank
Waters, a romantic and speculative author,
devoted a brief section to the subject in his book
Mexico Mystique. He identified the 13-baktun
interval as a "Mayan Great Cycle,"
overestimated its duration as 5,200 years, and
equated five such cycles with five legendary
eras, each of which ends in the world’s
destruction and rebirth. There is no genuine
Maya tradition behind any of this.
Waters also miscalculated the date when
the calendar would supposedly pull down the
shades. "The end of the Great Cycle . . . will
occur Dec. 24, 2011 A.D.," he announced, when
the world "will be destroyed by catastrophic
earthquakes." Exact date aside, the doomsday
ball was now rolling.
Another book in 1975 also spotlighted
the Maya calendric roundup. Dennis and
Terence McKenna discussed it in The Invisible
Landscape: Mind, Hallucinogens, and the I
Ching. That book at least got the Baktun-13 end
date right: Dec. 21, 2012. It also noted that the
date is the winter solstice, when the Sun will be
"in the constellation Sagittarius, only about 3
degrees from the Galactic Center, which, also
coincidentally, is within 2 degrees of the
ecliptic." The McKennas continued, "Because
the winter solstice node is precessing, it is
moving closer and closer to the point on the
ecliptic where it will eclipse the galactic center."
In reality this event will never happen, but it
hardly matters. The McKennas linked the whole
arrangement with the concept of renewal and
called 2012 a moment of "potential
transformative opportunity."
Broader interest in 2012 caught on
beginning in 1987. In The Mayan Factor: Path
Beyond Technology, José Argüelles (an "artist,
poet, and visionary historian" according to the
dust jacket) linked the 13-baktun period with an
impalpable "beam" from the center of the Milky
Way Galaxy. According to Argüelles, the Maya
knew when we entered this beam and when we
would leave it, and set their 13-baktun cycle to
mark our passage through it accordingly. The
beam, he asserted, operates as "invisible
galactic life threads" that link people, the planet,
the Sun, and the center of the Galaxy. Neither
Maya tradition nor modern astronomy supports
a belief in any such beam. It stemmed instead
from Argüelles’s personal philosophy, which
emphasizes "the principle of harmonic
resonance." Argüelles also concluded that the
planets are "orbiting harmonic gyroscopes" that
“play a role in the coordination of the beam,"
which advances the development of anything
with DNA. The year 2012, therefore, will bring
a rosy version of the apocalypse.
If this sounds a bit familiar, you're right.
In 1987 Argüelles and his followers predicted,
with worldwide fanfare, that Aug. 16–17 of that
year would bring a Maya-Galactic "Harmonic
Convergence." That event turned into a global
phenomenon, with thousands gathering at
Earth’s “acupuncture points” to create a
"synchronized and unified bio-electromagnetic
collective battery." Unfortunately, the date
passed with nothing more than colorful
newspaper stories and a Doonesbury satire. (A
character explains earnestly that that the
alignment could bring either "mass unification
of divine and earth-plane selves," or perhaps
nuclear annihilation. "Either way there will
probably be a crafts fair.")

Fast-forward to 1995. That year John

Major Jenkins packaged several of these themes
into Maya Cosmogenesis 2012. According to
Jenkins, the winter-solstice point and the
centerline of the Galaxy will line up exactly on
Dec. 21. Arguing that this motivated the Maya
to contrive the calendar to end on that date,
Jenkins concludes that it will be "a tremendous
transformation and opportunity for spiritual
growth, a transition from one world age to
another."
In fact, astronomy cannot pinpoint such
a "galactic alignment" to within a year, much
less a day. The alignment depends on the rather
arbitrary modern definition of the galactic
equator, and/or the visual appearance of the
Milky Way. There is no precise definition of the
Milky Way's edges -- they are very vague and
depend on the clarity of your view. (Jenkins
says that he personally established the Milky
Way’s edges by viewing it from 11,000 feet, far
above anywhere the Maya lived.) So to give a
precise visual position for its centerline is not
meaningful.
Jenkins did acknowledge that the
winter-solstice Sun actually crosses the center
of the Milky Way anytime between 1980 and
2016. Elsewhere he expands this approach zone
to a 900-year period, and settles for an
imprecise alignment to which Dec. 21, 2012, is
arbitrarily and circularly assigned. Real
astronomy does not support any match between
the Baktun-13 end date and a galactic
alignment. The advocates both admit and ignore
this discrepancy.
It's almost a sidelight that the winter-
solstice sun will never actually "eclipse" the
galaxy's true center, the pointlike radio source
marking the Milky Way's central black hole.
Moreover, the winter-solstice sun won’t even
pass closest to it on the sky for another 200
years. What did the Maya themselves think
about End Times? There is no evidence that
they saw the calendar and a world age ending in
either transcendence or catastrophe on
December 21, 2012. Some Maya Long Count
texts refer to dates many baktuns past 13 and
even into the next pictun and beyond. For
instance, an inscription commissioned in the 7th
century A.D. by King Pacal of Palenque
predicts that an anniversary of his accession
would be commemorated on Oct. 15, 4772.
In all of the Long Count texts
discovered, transcribed, and translated, only one
mentions the key date in 2012: Monument 6 at
Tortuguero, a Maya site in the Mexican state of
Tabasco. The text is damaged, but what remains
does not imply the end of time.
2012. Nonetheless, advocates of doom connect
the fictional alignment to astrological
predictions or groundless claims about a
reversal of Earth's magnetic field and
unprecedented solar storms. Many internet
postings and guests on all-night apocalyptic
radio have elaborated on these themes.
In particular, several threads of irrational
thought have created an internet phantom, the
secret planet Nibiru. It's the bowling ball, and
Earth is the pin. There is no such planet, though
it is often equated with Eris, a plutoid orbiting
safely and permanently beyond Pluto. Some
insist, however, that a NASA conspiracy is in
play and that Nibiru, looming in on the
approach, can already be seen in broad daylight
from the Southern Hemisphere. It was supposed
to become visible from the Northern
Hemisphere, too, by last May, but like a fickle
blind date, it stood up those awaiting it.
Others on the Web, confused about the
supposed alignment of the winter-solstice sun
with the Milky Way's center, have declared that
the Sun is now plummeting to the Milky Way’s
center and dragging Earth with it. The predicted
result? Earth’s polar axis will shift. Most of
what's claimed for 2012 relies on wishful In Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
thinking, wild pseudoscientific folly, ignorance
of astronomy, and a level of paranoia worthy of People Listen To
Night of the Living Dead. The ‘X’ Zone Radio Show
So maybe the Maya were on to us after with
all. The clock is ticking. And it’s the end of the Rob McConnell

There's no shortage of end-of-the-world
prophecies and hoaxes, but the latest one has a
slick twist. Or, some might say, a sick twist.
In fact, just by writing about it, I'm
playing into the hands of a big media company
that hopes I will write about it, or at least pass
the word and a link, so that they can ultimately
make money. Rather, I'll try to keep a few
people from being frightened.
The story starts with Mike Brown, an
astronomer at Caltech who has found more
planet-like objects in our outer solar system
than anyone.
Just like this reporter, Brown gets a lot
emails from people worried the world will end
in 2012. So many, in fact, that Brown has come
to call them "The 2012 People." He's long
assumed they're rather gullible worry warts. His
view just changed a little.
The concerns often stem from bogus
information about a fantasy planet dubbed
Nibiru which, the story goes, will swing into the
inner solar system, smack Earth in 2012, and
bring an end to it all. (Brown assures us there is
no such planet, and no such looming scenario
known to science.)
The emails have been increasing of late.
And recently one concerned citizen went a step
farther and called and left Brown a voice mail:
"I've got kids; this really scares the hell out of
me. Is there something I should be doing? Is this
real?"
The planet hunter reassured the man that
it was all just a hoax. The man was grateful.
But the man got Brown's attention.
"This guy was inherently skeptical about
the 2012 claims, and was happy when someone
with a ring of authority told him there was
nothing to it, but, still something had made him
worried enough that he had tracked down some
astronomer he had never met and called him to
reassure him about the safety of his family,"
Brown wrote in his blog this week.
Then Brown found some spam among
his email, an ominous missive that purports to
be from the director of the Institute for Human
Continuity. It warns: "The IHC has uncovered
evidence indicating that the disasters of 2012
are both real and unavoidable. We believe with
94% certainty that ... cataclysmic events will
devastate our planet and many who inhabit it.
December 21, 2012 cannot be ignored."
A link in the email to the IHC's supposed
web site actually takes you to a site that is so
cleverly designed, an unsuspecting person who
doesn't recognize the actors on the page might
think the IHC is real, that the end is near, and
that buying a ticket (to somewhere, on
something, who knows?) is the only hope of
survival.
Truth is the web site (it's here, it's fake,
you've been warned) is designed by Sony
Pictures. Okay, score 1 point for Sony, no harm
done, right?
Well, not so fast.
Brown, who is a pretty smart guy,

We all hate spam. And sometimes we
think its deceptiveness is distasteful, especially
when little old ladies are bilked of billions by a
faux Nigerian banker. And hoaxes sometimes
go too far. Some pranksters in New Jersey who
lofted flares on balloons in the night sky in
January, as a social experiment, were fined $250
by a court that determined their UFO hoax
"posed a potential fire hazard and could have
interfered with air traffic." It didn't, but their
deceptiveness, and the harm it could have
caused, was enough for the judge.
Brown wonders if this one goes too far,
scaring people who may never learn the truth
that would alleviate their fears.
"If the spam email had tried to scare me
about the end of the world and then directed me
to a web site which turned out to simply
advertise the movie, that would have been
distasteful," Brown writes. "But what is the
right word for a spam email that tries to scare
me to go to a web site which then tries to scare
me even more and doesn't even admit to being
simply an ad for a movie?" []

publishers are helping readers gear up and count
down to this mysterious — some even call it
apocalyptic — date that ancient Mayan societies
were anticipating thousands of years ago.
Since November, at least three new
books on 2012 have arrived in mainstream
bookstores. A fourth is due this fall. Each
arrives in the wake of the 2006 success of 2012:
The Return of Quetzalcoatl, which has been
selling thousands of copies a month since its
release in May and counts more than 40,000 in
print. The books also build on popular interest
in the Maya, fueled in part by Mel Gibson's
December 2006 film about Mayan civilization,
Apocalpyto.
Authors disagree about what humankind
should expect on Dec. 21, 2012, when the
Maya's "Long Count" calendar marks the end of
a 5,126-year era.

The buildup to 2012 echoes excitement
and fear expressed on the eve of the new
millennium, popularly known as Y2K, though
on a smaller scale, says Lynn Garrett, senior
religion editor at Publishers Weekly. She says
publishers seem to be courting readers who
believe humanity is creating its own ecological
disasters and desperately needs ancient
indigenous wisdom.

journalist Carlos Villa Roiz wrote an article this
week urging Mexicans to learn their country's
history and to reject the supposed end of the
world prophecies that Hollywood scriptwriters
attribute to the Mayans in the film “2012” that
never existed.
In an article published by “Impacto El
Diario,” Villa Roiz points out that the Mayans
surfaced around 1500 B.C and existed until the
end of the 17th century. “They were
astronomers, mathematicians, priests, warriors
and wise men who developed two complex but
precise calendars based on the “katun” (periods
of 20 years). One was the solar or civil calendar
of 365 days and the other was the Tzolkin lunar
calendar of 260. They ran together because they
both are divisible by five,” he explains.
Villa Roiz notes that “although there are
different interpretations about the equivalencies
between the Mayan dates and our calendar, the
director of the movie took advantage of this in
order to concoct that 2012 would be the end of
an era, and his fantasy was embellished by the
suicide of a Mayan community (that was
already mixed-race) that fell into despair
because the time of fulfillment of the Mayan
‘prophecies’ was approaching.”
According to Villa Roiz, “When it
comes to novels and movies, scriptwriters can
do what they want, they can dream up aliens,
goblins, witches, whatever. The result can be
fun, deplorable or offensive, such as the case
with the Dan Brown books. What is worrisome
is that people buy into them and turn these
fantasies into supposedly hidden dogmas.”
“Now well-into the 21st century, when
many people shun the historic religions under
the influence of materialism, relativism and
scientific methodology, it is deplorable that this
vacuum is filled by horoscopes, tarot card or tea
leaf reading, and film,” he writes.
“In Mexico,” he adds, “where
embarrassingly people read maybe two books a
year, it is sad that many believe all these lies,”
and therefore he urges students to read Sylvanus
G. Morely, one of the foremost experts on the
Mayans. “What the Bible says about the end of
the world is merely that ‘no one knows the day
nor the hour, but only the Father’,” Villa Roiz
concludes.[]

world

(CNN) -- This is how the world ends -- at least
at the multiplex this month.
Last weekend's box-office champ "2012"
primarily uses an ancient Mayan prophecy to
spin a tale of world destruction. "The Road,"
due out November 25, showcases a father and
son navigating a post-apocalyptic world of ash,
cold and cannibals. And the indie documentary
"Collapse" gives voice to one man's belief that,
as we exhaust natural resources, civilization is
ready to crumble.
Such concerns have always been with
us, says Alexander Riley, a sociology professor
at Bucknell University who's incorporated
eschatology (the study of the end times) into his
courses.
"It's been a constant part of the
landscape in the Western world for a long time,"
he says, though it's been particularly present in
recent times, perhaps driven by ever-quickening
social and technological change, he adds.
Examples can be found through the
centuries. At the end of the year 999, pilgrims
made their way to Jerusalem, convinced that the
Last Judgment was at hand. In 1843, thousands
of followers of the religious leader William
Miller gathered on New England hilltops,
waiting for ascension. In 1982, some believed
the "Jupiter Effect" -- the rough alignment of
several celestial bodies -- would cause
catastrophe.
And the coming of the year 2000 led to
fears about technological collapse -- in the form
of the Y2K bug -- and rumblings about the
return of Jesus.
The fact that none of these events led to
the end of the world hasn't calmed end-times
fears. Indeed, many people are still trying to
interpret alleged prophecies -- such as the
biblical Book of Revelation, Nostradamus'
verses and that 2012-focused Mayan Long
Count calendar -- in hopes of figuring out
exactly when the other shoe will drop, and
humanity will be freed from its vale of tears.
Riley observes that end-times passions
find particularly fertile soil in the United States,
which has a higher degree of religiosity
compared to other developed nations, according
to a 2008 Gallup survey. At the evangelical
Friends Church in Yorba Linda, California --
one of the largest Quaker churches in the world
-- Phil Hotsenpiller, the church's teaching
pastor, gives a yearly series of lectures on end-
times concepts and says interest has been high,
with "lines out the door."
He says that he tries to educate his
audience about the sources of apocalyptic
thought, and why biblical prophecy is such a
draw for some.
"Biblical prophecy lays out a scenario
that God says this is what's going to happen, and
just watch for these signs," he says.
The movie business has taken notice:
The Weinstein Company, producers of "The
Road," asked Hotsenpiller to take his show on,
well, the road to discuss themes of the film.
But it's not just Christian groups that
have an end-times fascination. Riley says that
all the major monotheistic faiths -- Judaism,
Christianity and Islam -- have variations on the
belief that God interacts directly with humanity,
and has made a promise "to wrap things up, and
then we'll get on with Act Two."
That idea of an Act Two -- or, better yet,
a conclusion -- satisfies something innate in
humans, he says.
"Lots of people have an interest in
cultural narratives ... that have a closure that
coincides to some degree with their own lives,"

Riley says. Science provides a story as well, he
says, "but it's very open-ended." The
eschatological narrative, on the other hand, says
"the world is going to come to an end, and it's
likely going to come to an end in my lifetime.
So conveniently, everything is going to wrap up
when or before MY life wraps up."
Which is where Hollywood, longtime
manufacturer of great stories and seeker of
customer satisfaction, comes in. iReporter: See

Movie history is replete with end-of-the-
world scenarios, whether driven by religion
("The Seventh Sign"), alien invasion ("Mars
Attacks!"), environmental disaster ("The Day
After Tomorrow"), warfare ("Dr. Strangelove")
or much of the above ("Beneath the Planet of
the Apes"). Wheeler Winston Dixon, Ryan
Professor of Film Studies at the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln, points out that the topic is
almost as old as film itself: The first sound film
of Abel Gance, who made the groundbreaking
1927 silent "Napoleon," was 1931's "The End of
the World," in which a comet slams into Earth.

Such films allow us to enjoy the present
while watching a fantasy about the future, he
says.
"I think it's a desire to sort of say ... 'We
won't have to worry about the future, because
there is no future,' " he says. "And so therefore,
we can do what we want now, and all the debts
are put off and all the responsibilities are
avoided."
Besides, "the complete destruction of
the world has always been attractive, because ...
by witnessing that act and staying outside of it,
you've witnessed the apocalypse," he says. "It's
much like a horror movie. It allows you to
participate without risk."
"We love adrenaline," adds Peter
Hankoff, a writer-producer of documentaries for
the National Geographic Channel and the
Discovery Channel, among others. "We always
have this need to be vigilant or hypervigilant.
So when something like this comes on our radar
of the possibility of the end, it peaks our
adrenaline level. ... We love disaster, and we
love to avert it."
But Hankoff, a pleasurably acerbic
skeptic who has made documentaries about
Nostradamus, says it's hard to persuade people
invested in end-times theories to revise their
views.
"The problem is, when you're faced with
the facts, and faced with finding real concrete
proof ... 2 plus 2 equals 4, no matter how many
times you add it up." Believing in the end offers
power to the dispossessed, he adds: "[If] there's
this level of feeling of insignificance, what's the
greatest equalizer in the world? The end of the

tragedy. In 1995, members of the Japanese
group Aum Shinrikyo released sarin nerve gas
into the Tokyo subway system, killing 12
people. Two years later, members of the
Heaven's Gate cult committed suicide in the
belief that a spaceship was going to come and
take them off earth.

their provocations can lead to apocalypse.
Still, as optimists are fond of pointing
out, "apocalypse" doesn't mean end, but is
Greek for "revelation" -- an unveiling of truth.
In that respect, says Hotsenpiller, a concern
about the end can lead to a desire to fix things:
hope that we, as humans, can make a positive
impact.
"All of us deep down know that
something's wrong with the world and with us
as people," he says. "There is something wired
into us, or placed in there by God, that says,
'Every one of you is going to have to deal with
the issues that ... aren't right in your life.' That
doesn't have to be a negative. It can be a
positive. It can be where I come to grips with
who I am as a person, with who I am before
God, and I make some changes."
And for those who are still convinced
that 2012 means the collapse of civilization,
Hankoff -- who doesn't buy it for a minute
(though he can't wait to see the movie) -- is
pleased to offer a solution.
"I want everybody that believes that
2012 is going to happen to send me their stuff,"
he says. "And if you get mad at me for saying
that 2012 is totally insane, you can send me an
apology on December 22, 2012 -- which is a
Saturday, by the way -- because I'm still going
to be here." []

them. Pop culture also has a fascination with
end times. Sociologists say the interest in books,
movies and lectures on the subject increases
with bad times, such as those scarred by
hurricanes, famines, tsunamis, war and
economic collapse.
The fascination is clear in society today
with the release of recent movies. The film
“2012,” which opened Friday, depicts the end of
the world and is stirring talk about the meaning
of a Mayan calendar with the doomsday date.

Zecharia Sitchin, 88, gets a lot of the
credit -- or blame -- for the whole 2012-
doomsday connection. Sitchin has written 13
best-selling books about -- among other things -
- alien contact, an undiscovered planet and their
connection to Sumerian, Mayan and other
ancient prophecies.
He doesn't buy into the 2012 hysteria,
either.
Rather, he believes the apocalypse is
coming -- but the calculations are all wrong. He
claims it will really happen in 2087.
The problem is that most 2012
calculations are based on a 365 1/4-day year,
not the correct 360-day year, which pushes
Earth's sell-by date back to 2087.
"What is expected under these three
calendars is the return of the Mesoamerican
god," says Sitchin, on the phone from his home
in Manhattan.
Sitchin sees parallels between this belief

"My main specialty, the Sumerian
civilization -- I'm one of the few who can read
the clay tablets left from 6,000 years ago,"
Sitchin says. "All the prophecies -- not just the
Mayans' -- (have) the expectation of the Return,
the second coming. In all the nations, there's this
expectation that God, the gods, the Creator, the
Benefactor who left, will come back. So, if
anything is to be expected, (it's) the return of the
gods. Whether the return is beneficial or they
come to punish us, frankly, I don't know. It's not

According to Sitchin, the "movie
people" based a lot of their end-of-the-world
scenario on his book, "The 12th Planet" (1978),
which claims that a mysterious planet on a long,
elliptical orbit returns to Earth's vicinity every
3,600 years -- something known to many
ancient astronomers, but not to us.
"The whole scenario of a catastrophe is
built around it," Sitchin says. "The catastrophe,
at one time, was the Biblical flood, the deluge.
That's one of the catastrophes that happened
when this planet came back to our vicinity -- the
gravitational pull, the magnetic pull, there was a
reversal of the Earth's axis. All sorts of things
happen when a large celestial body comes near

point of view of Mayan Majix, a website
representing prophetic, scientific and spiritual
information about the Mayan Calendar since
1998, the film "2012" misinforms and distorts
the true meaning of the Mayan sacred calendar,
which is about transformation, not the end of
the world. Equating the Mayan Calendar to
doomsday, "2012" is likely to create a Y2K
scenario prompting global fear and anxiety.
Mayan Majix sees a positive, optimistic
outcome as the end of the Mayan Calendar
unfolds.
A recent National Geographic magazine
article titled "2012 Prophecies Sparking Real
Fears, Suicide Warnings" supports Mayan
Majix's concerns about inflating global anxiety.
In this article, NASA astrobiologist David
Morison states, "I've had two teenagers who
were considering killing themselves because
they didn't want to be around when the world
ends," and "Two women in the last two weeks
said they were contemplating killing their
children and themselves so they wouldn't have
to suffer through the end of the world."
In response to the doomsday hype,
Mayan Majix strives to set the record straight as
to what the Maya themselves have to say about
2012. Featured prominently on the website's
home page is a video excerpt from the DVD
"The Mayan New Dawn," in which Mayan
Grand Elder Don Alejandro Cirilo Perez Oxlaj
gives the following message to humanity. He
says, "do not believe all the things that you hear
from all these people who are threatening the
world...my brothers and sisters, my message is
not to be afraid...take this message and spread it
throughout the world." Don Alejandro is the
head of the National Mayan Council of Elders
of Guatemala, Day Keeper of the Mayan
Calendar, a 13th generation Quiche Mayan
Priest and a Grand Elder of the Continental
Council of Elders and Spiritual Guides of the
Americas. He is also an international lecturer on
Mayan culture.
Founder of Mayan Majix, the late Ian
Xel Lungold traveled the world speaking to
people about the optimistic message of the
Mayan Calendar. A key point Lungold would
make in his presentation is that the Mayan
Calendar accurately describes the evolution of
consciousness. This understanding came while
studying with Dr. Carl Johan Calleman, who
authored the books, "Solving the Greatest
Mystery of Our Time, The Mayan Calendar"

film," said TransMedia's founder Tom Madden,

A baktun is the ancient calendar with a
cycle of 394 solar years that the Mayans used
for recording their history. The calendar started
in August 3114 B.C. and stops on Dec. 21,
2012. There are no more days after that.
A new movie titled “2012” starts from
there. There is no written prophecy in the
Mayan records that the aforementioned date is
doomsday. There is no way to find out the
reason why, however, the Mayan calendar stops
there.
Recently, a lot of so-called scientific
evidence has been added to support the
prediction that 2012 will be the “Last
Judgment.”
They include the theory that disastrous
climatic change and crustal displacement will
take place due to a polar shift, and that all kinds
of life on earth will perish due to the
bombardment of solar flares.
It is reported that fears of doomsday
spread fast among our teenagers, who are more
sensitive than others, after local television
stations broadcast programs related to the
doomsday scenario.
A countless number of eschatological
theories have been created over the years and
eventually disappeared. The most common
were the ones claimed by religious sects or
denominations.
It is interesting to note that the eschatological
behavior of the followers of such religious sects
is not affected by the fact that the predictions of
their leaders were proved to be false and that the
dates of doomsday were changed repeatedly.
Shoko Asahara - the founder of notorious
Japanese religious group Aum Shinrikyo, which
masterminded the 1995 sarin gas attack on the
Tokyo subway - predicted doomsday five times,
but all of those predictions were proved to be
false.
In retrospect, people from various walks of life
made such predictions. Pope Innocent III
predicted that doomsday would come in the
year 1284, the 666th year after the founding of
the religion Islam. Christopher Columbus
claimed that the Last Judgment would be in
1658. And John Napier, who invented
logarithms, predicted the years 1688 or 1700
would be the Earth’s last.

The predictions related to 2012 are
decorated with scientific theories, but it is not
the first time that scientific theories were used
to support eschatological predictions.
Astrologers claimed that the planets of
the solar system would form a “grand cross,”
which is mentioned in a prophecy of
Nostradamus, centering on the sun in July 1999,
and it would result in a big change in the
magnetic field of the Earth. But nothing actually
happened, of course.
However plausible the movie may
sound, it is obvious that the members of 2012’s
production team are not the least concerned
with the predictions about doomsday in 2012.
After all, if they were convinced that what is
described in the film would take place in reality,
when do they think they can spend the money
they earned from the movie? []

The world will end on
Dec. 21, 2012 -- or will
it?

Dene McGriff wants to make sense out
of the last days – the end of times. He has turned
to the Bible. Others have turned to ancient
calendars, prophecies and even movies.
All see the same message: The end is
near.
McGriff, a retired Carmichael
businessman, runs a Web site called Tribulation
Network, which is devoted to Bible prophecies
about the end of the world as we know it.
"People are looking for answers, there's
a lot of anxiety right now," said McGriff, 67.
They have browsed for answers in an
array of books on the subject, with titles such as
as "The Mystery of 2012," "Time Storm 2012"
and "2012: The War for Souls." They have
watched for them in the movie "2012," which
opened this month and earned more than $200
million worldwide in its first week. And they
have perused the proliferation of Web sites like
McGriff's.
There's more to come. "The Road,"
based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by
Cormac McCarthy about a post-apocalyptic
world, opens Wednesday.
"We're in an apocalypse bubble," said
John Hall, a sociologist at the University of
California, Davis, "in the same way that there
was a real estate bubble and a dot-com bubble."
Hall has studied apocalyptic movements
since the 1970s and is the author of
"Apocalypse: From Antiquity to the Empire of
Modernity." He does not believe the end is near,
echoing the sentiments of other observers who
either dismiss the interpretations or debunk
them as scientifically unsound.
"But I think all this reflects fears people
have," he said. "They are nervous about what's
going on in the world."
Global warming. Pandemics and health
scares. War in the Middle East. End-timers like
McGriff say these are signs that we are living in
the last days. "Look at the Bible," he said. "It's
predicted."
On his site, www.the-tribulation-
network.com, he examines a recent
announcement from Federal Reserve Chairman
Ben Bernanke that the recession is over and
concludes that "the current world economic
system … (opens) the way for something far
more sinister as we see in the prophetic
Scriptures."
The end of the world has come and gone
before. Believers have parsed the messages
from Nostradamus to the Bible Code, have
circled dates on their doomsday calendars, and
they are are still here to mark another.
"Nobody wants the world to end, but
everyone wants to know when its going to
happen," said Phil Hotsenpiller, the pastor of
Yorba Linda Friends Church, a Southern
California megachurch.
Hotsenpiller is the author of
"Armageddon Now," a series of seven graphic
novels showing how the biblical prophecies
play out. He also hosts an annual prophecy
conference.
He believes these are the last days. He
would not predict the date. The only prediction
he would make was that the end of times would
"be good for Hollywood and they'll probably
make a lot of money."
Many credit, or blame, the current end-
of-the-world interest in the examination of one
ancient Mayan calendar – and there are three –
that some have interpreted to say that the world
will end on Dec. 21, 2012.
On that date, the Mayan "long count"
calendar marks the end of a 5,126-year era. The
day is also the winter solstice. The Mayan
calendar is so well known that it has spurred its
own cottage industry.
"There is also an incredible alignment of
the stars on that day," said Colin Andrews, who
has written about end-times prophecies in "The
Complete Idiot's Guide to 2012." "I do think we
are entering another cycle, that we are going to
have a major realignment of some sort."
NASA, in response to 2012 inquiries,
has posted answers to frequently asked
questions debunking the 2012 predictions on its
Web site.
"Nothing bad will happen to the Earth in
2012," the site says. "Our planet has been
getting along just fine for more than 4 billion
years, and credible scientists worldwide know
of no threat associated with 2012."
Mayan scholars have also said the
ancient civilization did not predict the end of the
world.
Instead, they said that date symbolizes
an end of an important era and would be a
reason to celebrate.
"It's much like the way we celebrated
the end of a century," said Sandra Noble,
executive director of the Foundation for the
Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies in
Crystal River, Fla. "To say that it's an end of the
world is simply not true."
Some have compared the 2012 hype to
the Y2K scenarios a decade ago. "When nothing
happened, they found another date," said
Hotsenpiller.
The movie "2012" now helps generate
the hype. The film starring John Cusack retells
the biblical story of the great flood. There's a
worldwide catastrophe, a prophet in the
wilderness, arks and a boy named Noah.
Religious beliefs drive some of the
interest in the end-of-the-world scenarios. But
Christians do not believe the world will end in
2012. "The Bible said we will not know the
date," said Hotsenpiller.
But, McGriff said, the Scriptures do
emphasize the end. "The apocalypse is about
one quarter of the Bible," he said.
McGriff said he has been writing about
the Bible's message of the upcoming apocalypse
for 15 years. "If we're living in the last days," he
said "don't you think it's in our benefit to find
out what's going to happen?" []

The JFK Assassination
This much we can stipulate: President
John F. Kennedy was assassinated forty-five
years ago this week, on Nov. 22, 1963, struck by
two bullets — one in the head, one in the neck
— while riding in an open-topped limo through
Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas. Lee Harvey
Oswald was charged with killing him, and a
presidential commission headed by U.S.
Supreme Court chief justice Earl Warren found
that Oswald acted alone.
That conclusion hasn't passed muster
with the public. A 2003 ABC News poll found
that 70% of Americans believe Kennedy's death
was the result of a broader plot. The trajectory
of the bullets, some say, didn't square with
Oswald's perch on the sixth floor of the Texas
School Book Depository. Others suggest a
second gunman — perhaps on the grassy knoll
of Dealey Plaza — participated in the shooting.
Others believe in an even broader conspiracy.
Was Kennedy killed by CIA agents acting either
out of anger over the Bay of Pigs or at the behest
of Vice President Lyndon Johnson? By KGB
operatives? Mobsters mad at Kennedy's brother
for initiating the prosecution of organized crime
rings? Speculation over one of history's most
famous political assassinations is such a popular
parlor game that most people have taken the
rumors to heart: just 32% of those polled by
ABC believe Oswald carried out the killing on
his own.
9/11 Cover-up
Not since the JFK's assassination has
there been a national tragedy so heavily
imprinted in American minds — or that has
given rise to quite as many alternate
explanations. While video and photographs of
the two planes striking the World Trade Center
towers are famous around the world, the sheer
profusion of documentary evidence has only
provided even more fodder for conspiracy
theories.
A May 2006 Zogby poll found that 42%
of Americans believed that the government and
the 9/11 commission "concealed or refused to
investigate critical evidence that contradicts
their official explanation of the September 11th
attacks." Why had the military failed to
intercept the hijacked planes? Had the
government issued a "stand down" order, to
minimize interference with a secret plan to
destroy the buildings and blame it on Islamic
terrorists? In 2005, Popular Mechanics
published a massive investigation of similar
claims and responses to them. The reporting
team found that North American Aerospace
Defense Command (NORAD) did not have a
history of having fighter jets prepped and ready
to intercept aircraft that had gone off route. And
while it found no evidence the government had
planned the attacks, lack of proof has rarely
stopped conspiracy theorists before.
Area 51 and the Aliens
We may have Tang thanks to the space
program, but who gave us such innovations as
the stealth plane and kevlar? Aliens, of course.
Conspiracy theorists believe the remains of
crashed UFO spacecraft are stored at Area 51,
an Air Force base about 150 miles from Las
Vegas, where government scientists reverse
engineer the aliens' highly advanced
technology. Fodder for this has come from a
variety of supposed UFO sightings in the area
and testimony from a retired Army colonel who
says he was given access to extraterrestrial
materials gathered from an alien spacecraft that
crashed in Roswell, New Mexico. Some also
believe the government studies time travel at
Area 51, also known as Groom Lake or
Dreamland.
The government has developed
advanced aircraft and weapons systems at
nearby Nellis Air Force Base, including stealth
bombers and reconnaissance planes. And the
government's official line — that the details of
Area 51 are classified for purposes of national
security — are only seen as further proof that
the military is hiding aliens or alien spacecraft.
Paul is Dead
Paul McCartney never wrote "Maybe I'm
Amazed." He never formed the band Wings. He
never clashed with Yoko, became vegetarian, or
fathered any of his children. When Queen
Elizabeth knighted him in 1997, she was
actually knighting someone else. This is
because, conspiracy-minded Beatlemaniacs say,
Paul McCartney secretly died in 1966. Theorists
claim the other Beatles covered up his death —
hiring someone who looked like him, sang like
him, and had the same jovial personality. But
the guilt eventually got to them and they began
hiding clues in their music. In the song
"Taxman," George Harrison gave his "advice
for those who die," meaning Paul. The entire
Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
album was awash with Paul is Dead clues: the
Beatles had formed a "new" band featuring a
fictional member named Billy Shears —
supposedly, the name of Paul's replacement.
The album contained John Lennon's "A Day in
the Life," which had the lyrics: "He blew his
mind out in a car" and the recorded phrase "Paul
is dead, miss him, miss him," which only
becomes evident when the song is played
backwards. Lennon also mumbled "I buried
Paul" at the end of "Strawberry Fields Forever"
(in interviews, Lennon said the phrase was
actually "cranberry sauce" and denied the
existence of any backwards messages).
Paul is Dead believers think the Beatles
accompanied these backwards tape loops and
veiled references to death with album covers
that illustrated the loss of their friend. The
original cover of 1966's Yesterday and Today
album featured the Beatles posed amid raw
meat and dismembered doll parts —
symbolizing McCartney's gruesome accident. If
fans placed a mirror in front of the Sergeant
Pepper album cover, the words "Lonely Hearts"
on the drum logo could be read as: "1 ONE 1 X
HE DIE 1 ONE 1." And of course, there's the
Abbey Road cover, on which John, George and
Ringo forwent all pretense and pretended to
cross the street as a funeral procession. John
wore all white like a clergyman. Ringo, the
mourner, dressed in black. George donned
jeans, like a gravedigger. Paul wore no shoes
(he didn't need them because he was dead) and
walked out of step with the others.
If Paul is dead, then his imposter is still
at large. He met and married Linda McCartney,
with whom he had four children before losing
her to breast cancer in 1998. He released a live
album in 1993 called Paul is Live (likely story),
and produced over 20 solo albums — and that's
not even counting the ones released by Wings.
Then he endured a horrible divorce from
Heather Mills, which may have made him wish
he were dead — or at least, were still Billy
Shears. So who is the real McCartney? The
world may never know.

Secret Societies Control
the World
If you were really a member of the
global elite, you'd know this already: the world
is ruled by a powerful, secretive few. Many of
the rest of us peons have heard that in 2004,
both candidates for the White House were
members of Yale University's secretive Skull
and Bones society, many of whose whose
members have risen to powerful positions. But
Skull and Bones is small potatoes compared to
the mysterious cabals that occupy virtually
every seat of power, from the corridors of
government to the boardrooms of Wall Street.
Take the Illuminati, a sect said to have
originated in 18th century Germany and which
is allegedly responsible for the pyramid-and-
eye symbol adorning the one-dollar bill: they
intend to foment world wars to strengthen the
argument for the creation of a worldwide
government (which would, of course, be Satanic
in nature). Or consider the Freemasons, who
tout themselves as the "oldest and largest
worldwide fraternity" and boast alumni like
George Washington. Some think that despite
donating heaps of cash to charity, they're
secretly plotting your undoing at masonic
temples across the world. Or maybe, some
theorize, the guys pulling the strings aren't
concealed in shadow at all. They might be the
intelligentsia on the Council on Foreign
Relations, a cadre of policy wonks who
allegedly count their aims as publishing an
erudite bi-monthly journal and establishing a
unified world government—not necessarily in
that order.
The Moon Landings
Were Faked
I t's now been nearly four decades since
Neil Armstrong took his "giant leap for
mankind" — if, that is, he ever set foot off this
planet. Doubters say the U.S. government,
desparate to beat the Russians in the space race,
faked the lunar landings, with Armstrong and
Buzz Aldrin acting out their mission on a secret
film set, located (depending on the theory)
either high in the Hollywood Hills or deep
within Area 51. With the photos and videos of
the Apollo missions only available through
NASA, there's no independent verification that
the lunar landings were anything but a hoax.
The smoking gun? Film of Aldrin
planting a waving American flag on the moon,
which critics say proves that he was not in space
— the flag's movement, they say, clearly shows
the presence of wind, which is impossible in the
vacuum. NASA says that Aldrin was twisting
the flag pole to get the moon soil, which caused
the flag to move. (And never mind that
astronauts have brought back hundreds of
independently verified moon rocks.) Theorists
have even suggested that filmaker Stanley
Kubrick may have helped NASA fake the first
lunar landing, given that his 1968 film 2001: A
Space Odessey proves that the technology
existed back then to artificially create a space-
like set. And as for Virgil I. Grissom, Edward H.
White, Roger B. Chaffee — three astronauts
who died in a fire while testing equipment for
the first moon mission? They were executed by
the U.S. government, which feared they were
about to disclose the truth.
Jesus and Mary
Magdalene
Jesus and Mary Magdalene might have
been married, or so says the Gospel of Philip.
Sure, it's the basic plot of The Da Vinci Code
(the thriller also wraps in conspiracy
shibboleths like Opus Dei and the Knights
Templar for good measure) — but the theory
finds its basis in writings from the Gnostic
Gospels, which were discovered in 1945 and
whose authenticity religious experts still
dispute. In the gospel, Mary Magdalene, who is
referred to as Jesus' koinonos, a Greek term for
"companion" or "partner," is depicted as being
closer to Jesus than any other apostle.
In an exchange between Peter and Mary,
he admits to her that "the Saviour loved you
above all other women" — a tense moment in
the scripture that seems to portray the jealousy
that the other apostles might have felt for Mary's
relationship with Jesus. The only other evidence
used to support the theory is a mention of Jesus
kissing Mary often, a custom that some say was
typical of him to do to with those close to him.

Holocaust Revisionism
Despite overwhelming evidence and an
admission and apology from Germany decades
ago, revisionists continue to claim that nearly
six million Jews were not killed by Nazis during
the Holocaust. Iranian President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad, for one, has called the Holocaust
"a myth," and suggested that Germany and other
European countries, rather than Palestine,
provide land for a Jewish state.
Unlike Ahmadinejad, most revisionists
do not deny that Jews were interned in prison
camps during World War II; rather, they argue
that the number of deaths was greatly
exaggerated. Gas chambers are a particular
sticking point, which Holocaust deniers say
were purely a rumor, or, if they indeed existed,
were not powerful enough to kill — though
evidence and history indicates otherwise. And
the photographs of emaciated and dying Jews?
Attorney Edgar J. Steele, a revisionist, says,
"All those pictures of skinny people and bodies
stacked like cordwood were actually of Czechs
and Poles and Germans [who] died of typhus,
which was rampant in the camps."
The CIA and AIDS
Since the CDC first reported the
HIV/AIDS epidemic in 1981, rumors have
persisted that the deadly virus was created by
the CIA to wipe out homosexuals and African
Americans. Even today, the conspiracy theory
has a number of high-profile believers. South
Africa president Thabo Mbeki once touted the
theory, disputing scientific claims that the virus
originated in Africa and instead accusing the
U.S. government of manufacturing the disease
in military labs. When she won the Nobel Peace
Prize, Kenyan ecologist Wangari Maathai used
the international spotlight to support the theory
as well. Others insist that the government
deliberately injected gay men with the virus
during 1978 Hepatitis B experiments in New
York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Still
others point to Richard Nixon, who combined
the U.S. Army's biowarfare department with the
National Cancer Institute in 1971. Though the
co-discoverers of HIV — Dr. Robert Gallo of
the National Cancer Institute and Luc
Montagnier of the Pasteur Institute in Paris —
don't agree on its origins, most of the scientific
community believe the virus jumped from
monkeys to humans sometime during the 1930s.

website under a search for Bill Knell, with
approx. 50 DVD titles.
We have been in contact with many
websites that post articles by researchers on the
subject of Ufology, requesting that any articles
written by Knell should be removed, as another
means of removing him from circulation. Frank
had done this in the past with many removing
Knell’s articles after being informed of his
questionable ways. This will be expanded in the
future to more websites, radio hosts, and
researchers in our attempt to support what Frank
and Scott have made many of us aware of, by
joining together and not allowing these types to
get away with their activities.
All the researchers I have been affiliated
with over the years are in the same situation;
doing the best they can do with very little
income for their devotion to the subject of
Ufology. We don’t need scam artists that are
ripping off innocent researchers, or taking
advantage of innocent people that have been
buying his poor quality, unauthorized DVDs.
Bravenet’s responses to my complaints
were unacceptable, as they had been to other
researchers that complained to them, while
continuing to host Knell’s website after
numerous complaints had been filed. Finally,
after several emails to Bravenet informing them
that complaint forms had been submitted to IC3,
they informed me on Oct 26, 2009, that Knell’s
website has been suspended until their legal
department reviews the complaints. I have
requested a copy of their findings and assurance
that his website is permanently shut down.
This will not end the problem with Knell
doing what he has been doing for several years,
since he has had other websites shut down for
the same reasons in the past. He’s also had other
non-UFO related web sites that many on the
Internet have complained have misled them or
cost them.
