ABOUT GERMI
Gujarat Energy Research and Management Institute
(GERMI) is a Centre for Excellence in industry learning
and has been set up to develop human resource assets
to cater to both renewable and non-renewable energy
sectors, improve knowledge base of policy makers and
technologists, and provide a competitive edge to leaders
to compete in the global arena.
GERMI has already established specialized research,
education, management and training institutes, and is
continually expanding its horizons to cater to the allied
energy sector.
GERMI is a registered Society and a Trust under the
Societies Registration Act, 1860 and the Bombay Public
Trust Act, 1950.
GERMI is a recognized Scientific and Industrial
Research Organization (SIRO) by the Department of
Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government
of India.
For a nation that was one of the first to discover oil and
in the last couple of decades has become the fastest
growing discoverer of fossil energy resources, India is
also on the threshold to become one of the largest
global markets. The need for a resource centre was
anticipated to keep pace with the fast developing and
competitive energy industry, and to continuously build
requisite intellectual capital and human resource capital.
GERMI was brought into existence and is promoted by
Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation Limited (GSPC), a
Government of Gujarat Undertaking. GSPC is a fully
integrated energy company having its presence in
various sectors of the petroleum value chain such as
exploration and production, transportation of gas, power
generation, and IT services. GSPC is one of the fastest
growing state-owned companies, and has an excellent
support from the Gujarat Government as well as the
Central Government.

MISSION
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
An institute which dedicated itself to research always deserves a special place in the Nations
development initiatives. When the seeds of GERMI were sown, it was with a singular intent to
create and improve on energy research and management initiatives, which would create wide
ranging impact not only in the hydrocarbon sector, but also on alternative energy resources.
The GERMI initiative was flagged off with an executive training programme focused on the
petroleum sector, which swiftly moved on to the core committee endorsing the necessity to create
niche energy institutes. This resulted in creation of the Institute of Petroleum Technology and the
Institute of Petroleum Management, and in turn paved the way for the Pandit Deendayal
Petroleum University in just 2 years.
The successful creation of these institutes is now inspiring us to expand focus with the
establishment of the GERMI Research, Innovation and Centre.
Today, GERMI remains faithful to its vision and mission to fructify its initiatives. It believes in
adhering to international quality standards and actively works toward global creation of its
institutes, programmes, projects, research and extension initiatives.
In the near future GERMI will take bold initiatives in global networking of educational delivery
systems and establishing linkages for swift professionals and growth of manpower training, to
meet the dynamic needs of the energy sector.
I expect that in all these pursuits - establishing of institutes and centres, generic and special
course offerings, research knowledge creation and innovations - inherent and mandatory concern
for quality will be the overriding factor.
GERMI is still in its infancy. However dynamic and vibrant academic and research pursuits need
congenial ambience and can flourish with excellent work culture. I am sure GERMI has the
institutional resolve and sincerity to make a lasting impact on the Energy Sector.

MESSAGE FROM THE VICE CHAIRMAN AND MANAGING TRUSTEE
The Gujarat Energy Research and Management Institute has been established to work on the
science and technology of efficient production and consumption systems relating to energy. This
encompasses state-of-art approaches on tools and techniques, technologies and integrated
management in order to derive a holistic perspective to sustain development and reduce
externalities. Emerging trends on these aspects draw the attention of GERMI, signifying
opportunities to work at the local, national, regional and global levels.
The principal agenda is to provide much needed leadership in science and technology in areas
stated, aligned with the objectives of sustainable economic development and environmental
management. This integrated approach signifies the value addition GERMI provides through its
insightful research and development initiatives. Dr. V.P. Dimri triggered the process of
transforming this intent into a reality. The spread and depth of activities carried out by the staff of
GERMI has sustained the momentum.
The Institute was conferred recognition by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in
June, 2010. This was based on the veracity of the roadmap presented by GERMI to DSIR and the
historically sound credentials presented by the staff. GERMI has conscientiously adhered to its
roadmap and has demonstrated the feasibility of achieving significant results directly relevant to
the scientific and management approaches in the respective fields. This is evident from the
spread and depth of activities and results achieved during such a short period of existence. This
creates a potential opportunity for systemic linkages with national and international institutions
working on related areas. GERMI views this as a very important window of opportunity for
sharing expertise and in the process contribute to the development of policies and plans, through
an applied scientific research framework.
The three important thrust areas on which GERMI focuses its efforts are scoping and extraction
of carbon and other energy resources, mainstreaming solar energy infrastructure, use and
innovations to optimize solar energy potential and management of environmental externalities in
this context. Scientists engaged in these three thrust areas at GERMI have exerted their influence
on scoping, planning, policy and implementation of programmes at the state, national and the
global levels through appropriate interventions.
They are represented in important forums that evolve and steer decision making. This approach
signifies a comprehensive synergy between concept and reality. This is also the best way forward
and I am confident it will attract the attention of concerned stakeholders, only to grow in
momentum in the times to come.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR,
GERMI RESEARCH, INNOVATION AND INCUBATION CENTRE
Gujarat Energy Research and Management Institute (GERMI), a Society and Trust registered
under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950, was initiated
by the Government of Gujarat, promoted by Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation Limited (GSPC)
with energy-related goals through Education, Research and Industrial Training. Under the aegis
of GERMI, Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University is flourishing with six schools and about 2,000
students. The research team of GERMI Research, Innovation and Incubation Centre (GRIIC) is
presently focusing on three research wings - Petroleum, Solar and Environment.
Needless to emphasize the proactive initiatives by my colleagues responsible for the significant
levels of output seen in the past. They have, for example, provided scientific, technological,
management and training leadership in the field of energy and environment. The ambitious 5
MW Gandhinagar Photovoltaic Rooftop Programme in the State of Gujarat is one standing
example. The reality checks to streamline the institutional mechanisms to transform the intent
related to the solar energy optimization with the twin objective of safe climate and integration of
alternative energy systems is another example of their scientific excellence. The initiatives in
petroleum sector are under way with major multilateral, multi-institutional co-operation. Another
standing example is the mega-project taken up in the environment sector under full funding
support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) dealing with chemical
substitution and compliance, which is a major highlight of GERMIs research activity.
The institute is poised for integrated growth with substantial output in the coming few years based
on the initiatives being undertaken in the petroleum and renewable energy sectors. With a strong
team under its arm in the field of research, training and management, I am confident that GERMI
will soon get the attention of international scientists. I invite research institutes and organizations
to consider partnering with GERMI through joint research projects. We are in the process of
initiating programmes - internships to the students, visiting scientist, fellowships to the scholars
and visiting professorship awards to intellectuals to share their innovative thoughts and give a
helping hand to the upcoming young scientists of GERMI. As time passes, the visibility of GERMI
will soon be seen in the form of publications, mega-industrial energy projects and trainings to
skilled personnel, in order to reach greater heights.

ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE RESEARCH WING
INTRODUCTION
Exploration and extraction of energy substrates imply
changes in the qualitative and quantitative profiles of the
media in which the substrates are embedded. These
changes call for innovative amelioration interventions
including value addition to waste streams. Significant
amounts of energy are also spent on the exploration and
extraction operations. It is possible to develop
preventive management strategies to enhance efficiency
of energy related operations and in the process optimize
on energy output. This will apply to areas of energy use
in industrial operations in several other sectors too. The
basic thrust areas are about quantification of such
changes in substrates to gain insights on the ecological
and environmental phenomena that determine the
qualitative aspects with implications for sustainable use.
Energy audits, migration and fate of chemicals in the
substrates, individual and synergistic interactions as
signals of changes in resource quality are some of the
thrust areas for investigations. The relationship of
energy substrate quality with the quality of soil, water
and gaseous environment will be the main stay. Policy
assessments and prescriptions for integrated
management of technology and environmental
resources with specific implications for climate change
are related thrust areas.
