Preface
Parasitology can be defined as a discipline that deals with the study of parasites and
their interactions with their hosts. Parasites may live in (as an intracellular/
intercellular parasite) or on the host (as an ectoparasite) without causing any
discomfort or disease. Such parasites may be regarded as non-pathogenic parasites
whereas those which cause disease or illness are pathogenic parasites. Pathogenic
parasites pose numerous threats, not only to humans but also to domesticated animals
everywhere. The various challenges imposed by these parasites have led to the subject
attracting the interest of not only parasitologists but also other experts in biology and
medicine.
The book is mainly intended for biologists in general, zoologists, nematologists,
parasitologists, microbiologists, medical doctors, pathologists, as well as molecular
biologists. The book addresses the role of parasitology in medicine and public
health, while promoting a greater understanding of the intricate issues involving
parasites and hosts. Recent advances in the basic and applied approaches (including
research on the genetics of parasites) that are discussed in the book will assist in
developing chemotherapeutic strategies. World population growth and its impact on
agriculture and the emerging field of aquaculture also offers parasitologists an
opportunity to contribute at many different levels of research, including the
development of new diagnostic tools. Readers of this book can choose a topic of
their interest among some of the challenging areas of research like physiological
mechanisms underlying the process of locating intermediate/definitive hosts by
larval helminth parasites, the physiology of the activation and excystation in many
parasites, the complex and varied nature of site selection and pattern of migration
seen within helminthes, the sensory biology of parasites, chemical communication
between parasites, complex biology of helminth parasites regulated by conserved
families of developmental hormones, defined media for helminth parasites, the
excretory systems in acanthocephalans and nematodes, production of vaccines by
employing recombinant technology, and finally the use of isoenzymes and DNA
probes accompanied by PCR for diagnosis that could possibly bring more
breakthroughs in parasitology in years to come.
The book was edited by collecting the expert opinions of the scientific community in
the field of parasitology from different countries. It presents very interesting and

important articles on some of the challenging areas of parasitology and its related
human/animal diseases comprising epidemiology, evolution, and control approach
involving vaccine development. The entire book contains up-to-date information in 8
chapters placed under two sections namely A. Medical Parasitology and B. Parasite
ecology, evolution, morphology, epidemiology and biodiversity. The book is well
illustrated with line diagrams, colored plates, and colored and black and white
photomicrographs as graphical representations to help the reader easily understand
the important information being discussed in the text.
The editor is very thankful to the Publishing Process Managers namely Ms Dragana
Manestar, Ms Martina Blecic and Ms Natalia Reinic and also to Aleksandar Lazinica,
CEO for believing me to carry on the task and also giving me co-operation throughout
the process. Without their initiative and help this book would never have come to
light. I also wish to thank all the technical staff associated with publication of the book
(both online and in print edition) for making the task a reality. Numerous suggestions
from various quarters for improving the book are highly appreciated. I hope this book
will be useful to a wide range of readers by giving them a better understanding of the
subject.
Lastly, I would like to thank my wife Ruhana who always supported me whenever I
got an assignment.
