2 TWRAUDIOSGTL Hardware Description
TheTWRAUDIOSGTLisaTowerSystemperipheralmodulefeaturingtheSGTL5000audiocodecchip.
Thefollowingsectionsdescribethehardwareinmoredetail.ThisdocumentreferstotheTWRAUDIO
SGTLRevisionDandlater;itisnotapplicabletopreviousschematicsrevisions.Compatibilitywith
previousschematicsrevisionsisdiscussedinsection2.4.1.
2.1 SGTL5000 Audio Codec
TheSGTL5000audiocodecconnectstotheTowerSystemprocessoroverI2Cserialcommunicationfor
control,andoverI2Sfordigitalaudiodata.
ThedefaultI2CaddressesfortheSGTL5000audiocodecare:
1) Writeaddress:0x14
2) Readaddress:0x15
ThemaximumI2CclockratefortheSGTL5000is400kHz.However,duetoTowerSystem
configuration,capacitiveloadingandI2Cpullupresistorvalues,theI2Ccommunicationmayneedto
operateatalowerclockfrequency.JumpersJ1andJ2maybeusedtoadd4.7kOhmresistorstoI2C
SDAandSCLsignallines,toallowhigherclockfrequency.
TheI2CaddressesfortheSi5351Atunableclockgeneratorare:
1. Writeaddress:0xDE
2. Readaddress:0xDF
2.3 Harware Reset Considerations
TheSGTL5000chiphasinternalpoweronhardwarereset,butnoexternalhardwareresetinput.
Optionally,inadevelopmentenvironment,thepowertotheTWRAUDIOSGTLcanbeforcedtocycle
throughpoweroff/onwhentheTowerSystemprocessormoduleassertsthehardwareresetsignal.
JumperJ3allowsselectionofthehardwareresetfunctionality:
1) ForJ3inposition12:TowerSystemprocessormodulehardwareresetdoesnotcycletheTWR
AUDIOSGTLpower.
2) ForJ3inposition23:TowerSystemprocessormodulehardwareresetwillinitiateapower
off/powerupcycleoftheTWRAUDIOSGTLcircuitry.Thepoweroffstatewilllast
approximately20msec.
2.4 Master Clock Source Selection
ThereisachoiceoftwomasterclocksourcesfortheSGTL5000intheTWRAUDIOSGTLmodule.The
selectionisdonewithjumperJ6:
1) J6off:LocalSi5351Atunableclockgenerator(24.576MHzdefaultfrequency)
2) J6on:MasterclockfromtheTowerprocessormoduleI2Sport
2.4.1 Master Clock Compatibility With Previous Module Revisions
TheTWRAUDIOSGTLRevDmodulecanreplacepreviousmodulerevisionsafterproperselectionof
themasterclocksource.ToreplaceaRevBmodule,ensurethatjumperJ6ison(insertedinposition1
2),toselectthemasterclockfromtheTowerprocessormodule.ToreplaceaRevB1module,ensure
thatjumperJ6isoff(notinsertedinposition12),toselectthemasterclockfromtheonboardclock
generator.
2.5 I2S Interface
TheI2Sinterfacehasaserialdatainput,aserialdataoutput,aframesyncclock(alsocalledleft/right
clock)andaserialbitclock.Thetwoclocklinesareusedtoclockbothdatalines.TheI2Ssignalsare
connectedtotheTowerSystemprocessormoduleI2Sport.
2.6 I/O connectors
AlltheinputandoutputconnectorsontheTWRAUDIOSGTLaredescribedinthefollowingsections.
TheSGTL5000audiocodeccandriveasingleheadphoneload,soonlyoneofconnectorsJ4,J7orJ10
maybeusedatatime.
NotethatthecapacitorlessheadphoneoutputatconnectorJ10mustbeusedonlywithstereo
headphones.Thisoutputshouldnotbeusedtoconnecttoamplifiers,ortoheadsetswith
microphones,otherwisethevirtualheadphonegroundmaybeshortcircuited.
Recommendedheadphoneimpedanceisintherangeof16to32Ohms.
2.6.4 Analog audio mono microphone inputs
TherearethreeoptionsformicrophoneinputtotheSGTL5000:
1) BoardmountedmicrophoneP1theTWRAUDIOSGTLmoduleshipswithouttheP1
microphoneontheboard.Ifdesired,P1canbesolderedatitslocationontheboard.
RecommendedP1microphoneisthePanasonicpartWM64PCTorequivalent.Microphonebias
mustbesuppliedbyensuringthatjumperJ14isinposition12.Thisinputisselectedwhen
jumperJ11isinposition34.
2) Externalmicrophoneinput3.5mmconnectorJ13amicrophonefromaPCheadsetcanbe
pluggedintotheJ13connector.Microphonebiasissuppliedfroma3.3Vsourcethrougha10k
Ohmresistor.ThisinputisselectedwhenjumperJ11isinposition35.
3) Smartphoneheadsetinput3.5mmconnectorJ7aSmartphoneheadsetwithheadphonesand
microphonecanbepluggedintotheJ7connector.Microphonebiasmustbesuppliedby
ensuringthatjumperJ14isinposition12.TheiPhoneheadsetiscompatiblewiththeJ7
connector.ThisinputisselectedwhenjumperJ11isinposition13.
NotethatnotallSmartphoneheadsetsarecompatiblewiththesignalsattheJ7connector.Ensurethat
theheadset3.5mmplughasthecorrectsignalconnectivityasshownbelow:
1) Tip:HeadphoneLeftChannelOutput
2) Ring:HeadphoneRightChannelOutput
3) Ring:Ground
4) Sleeve:MicrophoneInput
