Do you remember SC#5? well this SC is sort of a continuation of it. So SC#6
says that Peter, the one who took over Victors avocado business, took over his friend,
Chelseas, business. Peters friend, Chelsea, had a tree farm that she asked Peter took
over because Peter did such a great job with Victors avocado business. When Peter
took over, Peter got several large orders from 3 companies who were asking for 75
tons, 85 tons, and 92 tons of wood to make paper.
Peter didnt know how many trees to cut down. Peter then went into Chelseas
farm log. The farm log showed Peter a table of how many trees to cut down for his
orders he got. The table shows Number of Trees Cut to the Tons of Wood. For
example, on the data table when Chelsea cut 170 trees then she got 17 tons of wood,
and when she cut 160 trees then she got 21. As you see the numbers dont look right.
How can you cut 170 trees and get 17 tons of wood but you cut 160 trees and get 21
tons of wood? Peter can use this data table to get an equation to solve an amount for
his 3 orders. This equation will be a linear equation because hes not doubling anything,
so it wont be a quadratic equation. You can tell that the scatter plot is a linear function
because you can see on the calculator that you can draw straight line and the line wont
be curved or like a U shape.
How you do this is, you plug in everything Chelsea wrote down on her farm log
onto a calculator. When you plug in all the data onto a calculator you get an equation
and a scatter plot. When you see the scatter plot you see that its a positive linear
function. When you plug in the data you get your equation that is y=.1+4. The x
represents the Number of Trees Cut and the y, in the equation, represents Tons of
Wood. When Peter got his 3 orders he now knows to plug in the orders into the y value.
Peter has to plug in the orders, 75, 85, and 92 tons of wood, to the y values because
the y represents Tons of Wood you get for the x, number of trees cut. You plug in the
tons of wood to the y to get the number of wood Peter has to cut down for each order, x.
So when you plug in 75 tons of wood, Peter has to cut down about 710 trees. For 85
tons of wood, Peter has to cut down about 810 trees. Lastly, for 92 tons of wood, Peter
has to cut down about 880 trees.
The number of trees Peter is cutting are not exact but really close to what he
needs. The correlation coefficient for this equation is r=.913. The correlation coefficient
means that the equation is close to a perfect like or not. This correlation coefficient in
this problem mean that the equation is close to a perfect trend line. The stronger the
correlation coefficient the closer the equation is to becoming a perfect trend line. So the
closer the correlation coefficient is to 1 or -1 then the equation is close to a perfect linear
function. Since the correlation coefficient is .913 the equation is a strong positive linear
function. Peter should be confident when using this equation because the equation is
strong positive linear function. He should be confident because hes cutting a
reasonable number of trees in order to get the number of trees for his large orders.
