Production analytics
The Petrel* E&P software platform enables reservoir engineers to collaborate effortlessly with
each other as well as with geoscience and production specialists. Combining knowledge from
all these disciplines into a single, model-centric subsurface representation means that changes
in the seismic interpretation or geological model cascade through to the simulation model.
Changes dictated by simulation studies flow back into the subsurface interpretation and model,
while integrated production data allows subsurface models to be kept easily in sync with the
latest operational information.
Powerful reservoir simulation environment
Petrel Reservoir Engineering provides a fully featured pre- and postprocessing reservoir
simulation environment, supporting the ECLIPSE industry-reference reservoir simulator and
the INTERSECT next-generation reservoir simulator. Easy-to-use workflows and powerful
visualization capabilities make the Petrel platform an efficient and productive environment
for reservoir engineering workflows.
Advanced gridding and upscaling
The Petrel platform offers a variety of gridding and upscaling techniques for resampling fine-
scale geological models to simulation-ready models. Gridding techniques include corner point
grids for full fields, stair-step (IJK) gridding for complex faults (e.g., highly inclined or Y faults),
as well as both structured and unstructured local grid refinements (LGRs) for challenges
associated with coning, and horizontal and multilateral wells. Upscaling includes a suite of
averaging methods and a flexible tensor function, to determine effective permeability in each
simulation cell.
Results charting and analysis
Plotting charts of simulation results and production forecasts is daily work for most reservoir
and production engineers. Petrel Reservoir Engineering provides a dedicated process for
simulation charting that gives greater control and reusability, allowing users to get high-quality
charts for reports and control how charts display, as well as share and reuse the charts and
templates on the next simulation, project, or asset. Engineers can also see the same data in
different ways to get more insight into their simulation, and play equivalents charts to compare
different wells or groups in a field.

INTERSECT field management
The INTERSECT simulator supports flexible, advanced field-
management capabilities, such as optimization of rigs and other
resources by specifying complex strategies with constraints and
conditional logic. The Petrel platform provides a straightforward
interface to easily configure and control these advanced workflows.
Better, faster decisions
Understanding the impact of uncertainty on your reserves estimates
and production forecasting is essential to making the right field-
development decisions. The Petrel platform provides straightforward
workflows to quantify and understand uncertainty. It also makes
advanced workflows quicker and easier, allowing engineers to
work more productively and arrive at better decisionsfaster.
Geological model screening and ranking
Starting with the geologic model and uncertainty ranges for various
parameters, the Petrel platform quickly generates multiple geological
realizations that are all consistent with observed data constraints.
FrontSim* streamline simulations let you create recovery profiles from
multiple models quicklythese are then used with static volumetrics
to screen and rank multiple geological realizations.
Uncertainty and sensitivity analysis
The Petrel uncertainty manager lets you create, submit, and analyze a
large number of simulation runs and proxy model solutions. Workflows
can be used for both dynamic simulation cases and static volumetric
cases, and are essential to understanding the impact of uncertainty
on hydrocarbon recovery. Flexible cross-plotting and tornado charts
provide extra insight into results.
Streamlined history matching
History matching is essential to continually improve the predictive
capability of reservoir simulation models. This process can be time
consuming and difficult when there are multiple wells, data types, and
properties to consider, and hundreds of simulation runs to be managed.
The Petrel platform streamlines this process, enabling you to define
a history matching objective function, as well as providing dedicated
data-management and sophisticated run-management systems. A
range of global optimization algorithms and analysis tools let you quickly
isolate the most likely realization and arrive at the best history match.
Optimization of well path and completion design
The Petrel platform provides advanced well-handling capabilities
with automated placement and completion optimization. You can
easily design complex wells, such as fish-bone and fork wells, and
place them inside geological bodies with precision. In addition, the
Petrel platform supports design of advanced completions such as inflow
control devices (ICDs) and flow-control valves (FCVs). The platform also
now supports complex well modeling to keep pace with the evolution
of completion designs. Sliding sleeve devices, which allow individual
branches of a multilateral well to be shut, are now modeled, visualized,
and configured for reservoir simulation. With these comprehensive
well-design tools and uncertainty and optimization workflows, you can
evaluate and optimize well placement and spacing, as well as the type
and number of laterals and completions.

MEPO plug-in
The uncertainty and optimization capabilities of the Petrel platform
can be extended by use of the MEPO* multiple realization optimizer.
The integration between Petrel platform and the MEPO optimizer
has been enhanced to provide easier access to running advanced
simulation-intensive workflows directly from the Petrel platform.
The MEPO plug-in provides a powerful toolkit for better understanding
reservoir behavior and parameter dependencies, and improves the
probabilistic nature of both greenfield and brownfield project deliveries.
Reservoir geomechanics
Geomechanics phenomenaincluding subsurface stresses, rock
deformations, and failurehave the potential to adversely impact
exploration drilling, well survivability, field development, and production
operations. The Petrel platform provides an efficient, integrated
environment for geomechanics modeling, enabling 3D preproduction
geomechanics modeling that allows experts and non-experts alike
to incorporate geomechanics analyses into their existing reservoir
or structural models.
Coupling these geomechanics models to reservoir simulation also
provides 4D analyses and predictions of stress changes, deformations,
and rock failure that might occur later in the life of their field. Two-
way coupling between the geomechanics simulations and ECLIPSE
reservoir simulations provides permeability updating of reservoir
models, predictions of enhanced permeability for regions of rock
failure, and geomechanics property updating with changing stresses,
temperature, and water saturations. Engineers can assess potential
changes and deformations in the reservoir overburden formations
throughout the entire field life that impact

well and completion survivability

the potential for solids production

inadvertent loss of reservoir containment and out-of-zone injection

fault movements

changes in reservoir characteristics and performance

induced rock failure and seismicity.
Unconventional reservoirs
Development of shale gas, shale oil, and coalbed methane plays has
increased dramatically over the past few years. The Petrel platform
provides a dedicated interface for defining the physics specific to
modeling these types of reservoir. Preset models and parameter values
are available, including Langmuir isotherms and pressure-dependent
adsorption functions, as well as a Palmer-Mansoori rock-compaction
model. The full ECLIPSE compositional coalbed methane model is
also supported, including component-dependent extended Langmuir
models and the multiple-porosity matrix model. With the high well count
required in these unconventional developments, automated workflows
plan optimal well placements based on both surface constraints and
reservoir quality assessments, supported by two Ocean* software
development framework plug-ins: Pad Placement and Pad Well Design.
Integrated production data
The Petrel platform provides easy access to production histories
via a connection with OFM* well and reservoir analysis software,
which supports integration of production data from both the well
and completion level. Production geologists can now incorporate
dynamic simulation and production data using new production
analytics capabilities for well performance analysis, to better diagnose
production losses or trends. Visualization techniques (e.g., bubble
mapping, production grid mapping, and a well section window track
for production) integrate the production history into the earth model,
providing an integrated environment for relating the actual well
production back to the geology.
The Petrel Well Deliverability module enables reservoir engineers to
validate and tune reservoir simulation models using hydraulic vertical
flow performance (VFP) tables and nodal analysis. Reservoir engineers
can then evaluate and choose optimum well completions or predict
well productivity, based on the impact of mechanical changes and
workovers on well inflow performance. Nodal analysis capabilities
record operational factors used in a simulation run and identify
possible problems using the data in context with the reservoir model.
