DRUG DESCRIPTION

Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C) is a water-soluble vitamin. It occurs as a white or slightly yellow crystal or powder
with a slight acidic taste. It is an antiscorbutic product. On exposure to air and light it gradually darkens. In
the dry state it is reasonably stable in air but in solution it rapidly oxidi!es. Ascorbic Acid is "reely soluble in
water# sparingly soluble in alcohol# insoluble in chloro"orm ether and ben!ene.
$he chemical name o" Ascorbic Acid is %-ascorbic acid. $he molecular "ormula is C&'(O& and the molecular
weight is )*&.)+.
Ascorbic Acid In,ection is a clear colorless to slightly yellow sterile solution o" Ascorbic Acid in -ater "or

INDICATIONS
Ascorbic acid is recommended "or the prevention and treatment o" scurvy. Its parenteral administration is
desirable "or patients with an acute de"iciency or "or those whose absorption o" orally ingested ascorbic acid
is uncertain.
5ymptoms o" mild de"iciency may include "aulty bone and tooth development gingivitis bleeding gums and
loosened teeth. 8ebrile states chronic illness and in"ection (pneumonia whooping cough tuberculosis
diphtheria sinusitis rheumatic "ever etc.) increase the need "or ascorbic acid.
DOSAGE AND AD!INISTRATION
Ascorbic acid is usually administered orally. -hen oral administration is not "easible or when malabsorption
is suspected the drug may be administered intramuscularly intravenously or subcutaneously. -hen given
parenterally utili!ation o" the vitamin reportedly is best a"ter I9 administration which is the pre"erred
parenteral route.
8or intravenous in,ection dilution into a large volume parenteral such as :ormal 5aline or ;lucose is
recommended to minimi!e the adverse reactions associated with intravenous in,ection.
$he average protective dose o" ascorbic acid "or adults is *0 to )/0 mg daily. In the presence o" scurvy
doses o" +00 mg to ) gram daily are recommended. 'owever as much as & grams have been administered
parenterally to normal adults without evidence o" toxicity.
$o enhance wound healing doses o" +00 to /00 mg daily "or a week to ten days both preoperatively and
postoperatively are generally considered ade4uate although considerably larger amounts have been
recommended. In the treatment o" burns doses are governed by the extent o" tissue in,ury. 8or severe
burns daily doses o" ) to 2 grams are recommended. In other conditions in which the need "or ascorbic acid
is increased three to "ive times the daily optimum allowances appear to be ade4uate.

#ARNINGS
1iabetics patients prone to recurrent renal calculi those undergoing stool occult blood tests and those on

$oo-rapid intravenous in,ection is to be avoided.
$aborator( Tests
1iabetics taking more than /00 mg o" ascorbic acid daily may obtain "alse readings o" their urinary glucose
test. :o exogenous ascorbic acid should be ingested "or C( to *2 hours be"ore amine dependent stool occult
blood tests are conducted because possible "alse-negative results may occur.

Usage In Pregnanc(
Pregnancy Category C - Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted with Ascorbic Acid
In,ection. It is also not known whether Ascorbic Acid In,ection can cause "etal harm when administered to a
pregnant woman or can a""ect reproduction capacity. Ascorbic Acid In,ection should be given to a pregnant
woman only i" clearly needed.

Patient In%ormation
In humans an exogenous source o" ascorbic acid is re4uired "or collagen "ormation and tissue repair.
Ascorbic acid is reversibly oxidi!ed to dehydroascorbic acid in the body. $hese two "orms o" the vitamin are
believed to be important in oxidation-reduction reactions. $he vitamin is involved in tyrosine metabolism
conversion o" "olic acid to "olinic acid carbohydrate metabolism synthesis o" lipids and proteins iron
metabolism resistance to in"ections and cellular respiration.
Ascorbic acid de"iciency results in scurvy. Collagenous structures are primarily a""ected and lesions develop
in bones and blood vessels. Administration o" ascorbic acid completely reverses the symptoms o" ascorbic
acid de"iciency.
