Case 2079-1
Pressure Relief Valve Part Conversions by
Assemblers
Section I and Section VIII, Division 1
Inquiry: Section I para. PG-73.3.4 and Section VIII,
Division 1 para. UG-136(c)(4) require valve assemblers
to use only original unmodied parts. Under what
conditions may a valve assembler, prior to assembling
a new valve, convert by machining an original nished
part received from the valve manufacturer, to another
nished part, for a specic application?
Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee that an
assembler may convert original nished parts under
the following conditions:
(a) Modications shall be as specied by the manu-
facturer. Drawings and/or written instructions used by
the assembler for part conversion shall be obtained
from the manufacturer and shall include a drawing or
description of the modied part before and after machin-
ing. If the part modication(s) affect the ow path,
lift, or performance characteristics of the valve, the
manufacturer shall have completed the tests required
by PG-69.6 or UG-131(j).
(b) The assemblers quality control system, as ac-
cepted by a designated representative of ASME, must
describe in detail the conversion of original parts,

provisions for inspection and acceptance, personnel
training and control of current manufacturers drawing
and/or written instructions.
(c) The assembler must document each use of a
converted part and shall uniquely identify each Code
symbol stamped valve with such parts. In addition, for
Section I the assembler shall stamp this Case number
on the valve nameplate, or on an additional tag with
the assemblers name or trademark and the valve type
or gure number.
For Section VIII the assembler shall stamp this Case
number on the valve nameplate, or on the valve, or
for a valve smaller than NPS

, on a metal tag attached
by wire and meeting the requirements of UG-119.
(d) The assembler must demonstrate to the satisfac-
tion of the manufacturer the ability to perform each
type of conversion. The Manufacturer shall document
all authorizations granted to perform part conversions
and shall maintain records of all part conversions made
by the assembler. The assembler shall maintain a le
of such authorizations.
(e) At least annually a review shall be performed
by the manufacturer of an assemblers system and
machining capabilities. The Manufacturer shall docu-
ment the results of these reviews. A copy of this
documentation shall be kept on le by the assembler.
The review results shall be made available, upon request,
to the designated representative of ASME.
(f) The valve in the nal modied condition shall
be tested in accordance with PG-73.4 or UG-136(d).
