Case 2084-1
Attachment of Unanged Tubesheets to the Shell
of Firetube Boilers
Section I
Inquiry: As an alternative to the requirements of
PFT-11.4.2, may unanged tubesheets be welded to
the shell of retube boilers with the tubesheet projecting
beyond the shell so that the welded joint is not wholly
within the shell?
Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee that as
an alternative to the requirements stated in PFT-11.4.2,
unanged tubesheets may project beyond the shell of
retube boilers and be welded to the shell by means
of a corner joint, as depicted in the sketch below,
under the following provisions.
(a) The tubesheet is supported by tubes, or stays,
or both, in accordance with the applicable rules for
at stayed surfaces contained in PFT-22 through PFT-
32. A minimum of 80% of the pressure load shall be
carried by tubes, stays, or both.
(b) The weld is a full penetration weld applied from
either or both sides of the shell.
(c) The external llet weld throat (t
c
) shall not be
less than the smaller of
1

4
in. or the thickness of the
thinner part being joined. No weld prep machining is
performed on the at tubesheet. The distance from the
edge of the completed weld to the peripheral edge of
the at tubesheet (t
e
) shall not be less than the thickness
of the tubesheet (t
h
).
