St. Clair Shores City
Council moved the cre-
ation of the citys new-
est microbrewery and
taproom one step clos-
er to fermentation.
Council voted to ap-
prove a microbrewery
license to Short Tail
Brewing Co.
The microbrewery is
slated to renovate the
old Bennetts Market
building on Jefferson
just north of 10 Mile
Road, a building that
has sat vacant for some
time.
It kind of just made
sense to come to the
lake, Evan Feringa
from Short Tail
Brewing Company
LLC, said. The old
Bennetts Market came
to our attention. It was
the perfect size for a
microbrewery. We did
some research and
crunched some num-
bers after that, and we
decided that we would
go forth and bring a
brewery to St. Clair
Shores.
The recommenda-
tion from the city coun-
cil clears another hur-
dle for Short Tail
Brewing Company,
which hopes to get ap-
proval for their licens-
ing from the state and
the federal government
sometime in July.
Well then start
making the beer,
Feringa said. It takes
about three weeks for
an ale to ferment and
get ready to be tapped.
We hope to be open
within the first or sec-
ond week of August.
Short Tail Brewing is
not a bar, nor is consid-
ered a restaurant,
Feringa said.
We are just going to
be a microbrewery and
taproom, he said. We
are essentially seen as a
distributor that allows
people to taste and pur-
chase this product. We
will be making beer on-
ly. We will not be mak-
ing any food or have a
kitchen. What we are
going to do is have local
restaurants, their
menus. They can deliv-
er to us and people can
always bring in the food
of their choice. Were
going to make all the
beer on premise, and
were going to sell it in
the taproom and sell it
to local bars and restau-
rants as well.
Several council
members were quick to
wish the citys newest
business well.
I just want to wish
you guys best of luck,
Councilman Chris
Vitale said. Its excit-
ing. Best of luck with
your venture.

For years, the Bocce Ball courts located
just outside the St. Clair Shores Senior
Center for Active Adults have been a
hotspot for the centers members.
Leagues and tournaments have been com-
monplace, not to mention the fact that playing the game and
socializing with fellow members is a highly desirable activity.
Now, however, a group of bocce enthusiasts at the center
are opening the courts to anyone who enjoys the game.

The St. Clair Shores
Police Department is
adding a new 2014
Dodge Charger to the
stable of police cruisers
with the city councils
approval of the $22,834
purchase through a
state bid.
The new car replaces
scout 69, which is al-
ready part of the depart-
ments lineup of vehi-
cles.
The current scout car
has only 78,000 miles,
but has been in the ga-
rage seven times in 2014
alone for a variety of is-
sues ranging from radia-
tor problems to fuel
pump and heater issues.
Ive got vehicles out
there with over 100,000
miles on them and they
still run like a champ,
Lt. Anthony Pietrzak
said. We dont always
look at the miles. Weve
got to start looking at re-
pair costs, and its time
for this one to go. Thats
why we are seeking to
do this right away.
The new Charger will
have a new V6 engine in
it, the first for the city.
The switch to this en-
gine size from the tradi-
tional V8 comes with
the hopes that this will
reduce the need to re-
place brakes and tires as
often, Interim City

Nearly three dozen
vendors have already an-
swered the call and
signed on to be a part of
the Optimist Club of St
Cl a i r S h o r e s
Community Garage
Sale.
Thats hundreds and
hundreds of items for pa-
trons to browse, inspect,
and purchase beginning
at 8 a.m. Saturday, June
21, in the parking lot of
the South Lake Public
Schools administration/
athletic fields on
Stadium Boulavard off of
9 Mile Road between
Harper and I-94.
Were very excited
about it, event organiz-
er, Kathy Rayner, said.
Weve got 34 vendors al-
ready committed and
were thinking there
might be even more as
we get closer to
Saturday.
Rayner said there are
still plenty of spots re-
maining for anyone
looking to set up shop
for the day.
Theres still space,
she said. Just contact
me as soon as possible.
Each space is about
two parking spots in ar-
ea, and costs vendors
$25, she said.
You dont need to
worry about garage sale
permits or anything like
that, she said. We take
care of all of that stuff.
For those planning on
shopping the sales,
Rayner said there is cer-
tain to be a wide variety
of merchandise for sale.
The vast majority are
garage sales, with people
bringing all kinds of
stuff, she said. But
weve also got commit-
ments from vendors with
Thirty-One Gifts and
Mary Kay Cosmetics.
The St. Clair Shores
Players, Rayner added,
are setting up shop at the
event and plan to have
some props for sale.
Theres going to be a
lot of variety there,
Rayner said. Weve got
office equipment, the
props, and then all the
things people bring for
their own sale. Id say it
would be safe to say
theres going to be some-
thing for everyone.
Proceeds from the
space rentals at the
event go to the Optimist
Club of St. Clair Shores.
Im really looking for-
ward to it, Rayner said.
But, honestly, I really
dont know what to ex-
pect. This is the first time
weve done anything like
this. Its exciting, but Im
a little nervous too.

Some people attending
this years St. Clair
Shores Venetian Festival
on the Nautical Mile
might find more than just
a good time.
They might just find
their best friend thanks to
the Jefferson Yacht Club
and 4Paws 1Heart found-
er Diana Rascano.
Rascano is coordinat-
ing a pet adoption event
during the festival, which
gets underway Friday,
July 18, and runs through
Sunday, July 20.
The JYC is making it
part of their events, she
said. Which is so great.
Theyre sponsoring it,
and were really hoping
that a lot of dogs and cats
can find loving homes,
and a lot of people can
find a new member of the
family.
A trio of rescue organi-
zations, Tigerlily Cat
Rescue, A ReJoyceful
Animal Rescue, and a
Hopeful Heart Animal
Rescue, will all be part of
the adoption fair, each
one bringing adoptable
pets to the grounds of the
JYC at 24504 Jefferson,
along the Nautical Mile.
The JYC was very en-
thusiastic about it when
the idea came about,
Rascano said. They have
other events going on
that day too, but they real-
ly were very receptive
and very helpful about
the adoption idea.
Rascono said the inclu-
sion of the adoption fair is
further evidence of the
nature of the festival it-
self.
Its about the commu-
nity, and helping the com-
munity, she said. This is
just another way the
Venetian Festival is doing
that this year. Im very
happy to be helping out
with this, and very excit-
ed about it

CHARGER
Manager Mike Smith said.
One of the issues we have had with the
Chargers, pretty much since day one, is that we go
through brakes and tires at a much higher rate
than previous vehicles, Smith told the council.
We made a decision to try the V6s and see what, if
any, difference there is in brakes and tires.
Regardless of the engine size, V8 or V6, Smith
said both are pursuit rated, making them suitable
for the departments needs.
The funds for the purchase of this vehicle was al-
ready figured into the 2014-2015 budget.
The state bid program process saved the city
about $10,000 in this case, Councilman Chris Vitale
pointed out.

Emil DePasquale and Gene
Meyer are bocce enthusiasts and
are the driving forces behind open-
ing the courts up a few times per
week to non-members of the cen-
ter.
Actually, Im hoping to help raise
some money for the center this
way, DePasquale said, standing on
one end of the courts at the center.
Its $5 for one game, or $8 for two
games. Thats a really reasonable
amount to have so much fun.
DePasquale added that someone,
usually he or Meyer, would always
be on hand to answer questions, su-
pervise the games on the finely
groomed courts, and balls, along
with other essentials to the game
are all provided for players.
Were really hoping to get mens
groups or church groups to play,
Meyer said. But you dont have to
be a member, and you can be any
age to play. We like families, cou-
ples, anybody really. And we pro-
vide everything for the game.
DePasquale said games typically
last 45 minutes, and along with the
challenge and competitive nature
of the sport, its more than that to
players.
Its a social hour too, he said.
Its a chance to get together with
friends, or event people you just
met here at the courts, and have a
good time. Theres noting wrong
with that.
Meyer added that the game is en-
joyed by all ages.
Im 82-years old, and we have
some people in their 90s who play,
he said. Some people, as they get
older, maybe you cant lift a bowl-
ing ball like you use to, or some-
thing like that. This is a great game
that isnt as demanding physically
as other sports.
As the sun set last Monday eve-
ning, DePasquale, and a handful of
other bocce enthusiasts competed
against each other, shared a smile,
and laughed.
Its just a really good time,
DePasquale said. Its just a really
great time.

BOCCE

Bocce ball is a very popular sport at the senior center. The courts are now going to be open
to the general public on certain days during the week. Monday evening bocce ball players,
above, pose for a photo beside the courts.
Mother Nature cooperated last month with an estimated 300 volunteers who
gathered at various spots along the citys coastline as part of the 19th annual
Nautical Coast Cleanup.
Now, after several weeks of tallying, the final numbers are in the record
books.
Volunteers working at Veterans Memorial Park, Blossom Heath Park, the
Chapaton Retention Basin and Champine Park, collected over 18.29 tons of
debris from the shoreline, filling four 10-yard Dumpsters over the course of
the event.
This number pushed the events historic total of a staggering 628 tons of de-
bris, trash and decaying seaweed from the waters of Lake St. Clair.
It was a great cleanup, Joe St. John, Waterfront Environment Committee
Chairperson, said. We just want to thank everyone who came out to help, all
the volunteers and everyone who sponsored and contributed to the cleanup. It
was a real successful event.
19th annual Nautical
Coast Cleanup a success
City Councilman John Caron was one of many volunteers who came out to the 19th
annual Nautical Coast cleanup. Caron and nearly 300 fellow volunteers collected
more than 18 tons of debris from the waters of Lake St. Clair.

ortable fire
pots can add
charm to the
outdoor patio,
garden and
spaces inside the home.
Last fall I picked up a
large chiminea someone
had discarded. Though it
had a broken bottom
piece, its wide pot belly
and chimney, and weath-
ered terracotta patina
looked beautiful to me and
I wanted to use it.
At home I placed the
chiminea next to a
Coleman outdoor fire-
place. Not trusting its stur-
diness on an iron stand, I
propped the chiminea up
straight on a large card-
board box filled with a
mixture of wet cement
made of clay and sand. I
placed large, like-color,
stones on the cement for
its outer base and placed
shiny coal stones inside it.
A few small fires were lit
in the chiminea, but I like
the look of the fire in the
tall Coleman fireplace
best. The chiminea now
stands at the backyard
side fence where tall sun-
flowers grow. There it will
become a beautiful piece
of garden art.
Since bringing home the
chiminea, Ive learned the
following:
New clay fire pots need
to be seasoned before fir-
ing. To season, light sever-
al small fires before burn-
ing a larger wood one. And
use sand or stone as a base
for the fire.
The hand crafted terra-
cotta stove chimneys
chiminea originated in
Mexico. They are outdoor
fireplaces used for cook-
ing. And it only takes an
adjustable, removable
cooking grate to safely
cook in a fire pot made of
clay, cast iron, copper or
steel.
A popular garden de-
sign is recycled fire pots
used as art. Plant large or
small flowers inside a bro-
ken chiminea or enjoy the
look of sunflowers or zin-
nias whose stems grow
out in seek of the sun.
Illuminate the garden at
night by placing lit candles
inside. Some gardens have
fire pots used as a bird
bath and feeder.
Designers and decora-
tors are also placing large
chimineas indoors. In a
spacious bathroom,
chimineas have been used
as towel holders. Other in-
door uses include a house
for pets, candle holder and
planter.
I have an indoor
chiminea and use decora-
tive black sand in its base
to position a tall pillar can-
dle.
Chimineas can produce
tremendous warmth and
candles placed inside it
can warm up a small
room. By placing two or
three clay pots of various
sizes over its chimney, the
rising heat is kept inside,
heating up the clay.
The act of recycling and
repurposing can be fun
and enhance the home
and garden.
4A ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, JUNE 19, 2014
The work that local ani-
mal welfare group 4Paws
1Heart does is not easy.
This 501(c) 3 organiza-
tion helps pay for life-sav-
ing medical procedures.
They help cover the
costs of veterinary visits
and treatments that might
otherwise not get done,
and, more often than not,
they are the difference be-
tween life and death for a
homeless animal in need
of help.
4Paws 1 Heart works to
help local rescue groups
by providing much-need-
ed funds to get aban-
doned and abused dogs
and cats, and even other
companion animals,
healthy and happy, and,
ready for adoption.
All of this work, howev-
er, requires money.
So this year, with the
hopes of raising some of
these much-needed mon-
ies, 4Paws 1 Heart is put-
ting on a Walk and Run
Fur Fun 5K.
The event hits the
streets at 9 a.m. Saturday,
July 19, at the 2014 St.
Clair Shores Venetian
Festival on the Nautical
Mile.
The course starts at
Fishbones , at 9 Mile and
Jefferson, and winds
through the citys famed
Nautical Mile.
All of the proceeds go
to 4Paws 1Heart, found-
er Diana Rascano said.
And that money is going
to help abused and aban-
doned animals.
Rascano said that par-
ticipants are encouraged
to bring their dogs to join
in the fun run/walk.
You can do most of the
course with your dog,
she said. But you just
wont be able to go into
Blossom Heath Park.
Which isnt a big deal
since this is really more
about having fun.
Entry fees for the run
before July 10 are $20 for
adults, and $10 for chil-
dren ages 6-17-years old.
Children under 5-years
old are free of charge.
After July 10, the entry
fees jump to $25 for adults
and $15 for children
6-17-years old.

Everybodys different,
and finding the right
swimsuit can be impossi-
ble and frustrating for
many ladies.
Theres help available
through a known and
trusted option, Custom
Swimwear by Exelnt
Design.
For nearly 30 years,
owner Trish Crowder has
built her Warren-based
business into a successful
brand with thousands of
happy customers.
Everybody has differ-
ent needs, Crowder said.
Were able to design a
suit perfect for their body.
No matter the size or
shape, bustline, hips -
whatever they need.
The need came for
Crowder when she expe-
rienced the frustration of
finding a great-fitting suit.
She designed her own
and it became more than
a project.
She left her job with an
advertising agency and
started a home-based
business.
Soon, it needed more
space and in 1991, the
company grew into its
current location at the
northwest corner of 13
Mile and Mound in
Warren.
No appointment is
needed to get a start on
having the perfect hand-
made swimwear locally
made in about two weeks.
Swimsuits can be an
emotional purchase,
Crowder said. Women
should feel comfortable in
what theyre wearing. It
should fit their body.
Thousands of suits in
great colors and designs
are available for purchase
at the store and online.
The store works with
individual customers, but
also has worked with lo-
cal swim teams to help
meet their custom needs.
I love what Im doing,
Crowder said. Its differ-
ent all the time and its
very rewarding.
Many of the 17 on staff
have worked with
Crowder for years.
Patterns, alterations
and swimwear creation
happen in the same build-
ing as the expansive
showroom of swimwear.
We have a style and
size for just about every
body, Crowder said. For
more information, visit
customswimwear.com or
call 1-800-479-9987 or
(586) 977-9140.

THURSDAY, JUNE 19, 2014 ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION 9A
SPORTS
FILE PHOTO
Lakeviews Mitchell
Cunha lays down a bunt
against Grosse Pointe
South earlier in the sea-
son. The Huskies
wrapped up the 2014
campaign 8-18 overall
and 5-10 in the Macomb
Area Conference Gold
Division. Although the
high school season is
over, there are still plenty
of sporting events and
happenings going on in
the city. The Connection
sports page is a great
place to show off your
summertime athletic ac-
complishments.
This page belongs to
each of you.
It belongs to weekend
warriors and travel
teams.
With the high school
sports season in the
books.
Lakeview, South Lake
and Lake Shore fans will
have to wait until August
to begin cheering for
their respective teams
again.
However, sports is far
from over in the city.
Baseball, softball, boc-
ce ball, tennis, swim-
ming, golf, and the list
goes on and on here, are
all taking place in the
summer months.
And its our desire to
share these stories and
photos on the sports page
each and every week.
Of course, this invita-
tion holds true through-
out the school year, but
its the summer months
in particular where we re-
ally want to show our lo-
cal athletes and their ac-
complishments off to the
neighborhoods from the
south end to the north
and every place in be-
tween.
For this to happen
though, we at the
Connection need your
help.
Its crucial.
We need e-mails about
events, athletes and big
games.
We need photos of
teams posing with tro-
phies, scoring the win-
ning run, and showing
off their prowess on the
field.
We need soccer teams,
baseball squads and
swimmers.
We need sailing races
and bike race finishers.
We need to hear about
senior Olympians, Little
League standouts and
people getting fit.
There are so many
amazing sports stories
to tell, but I cant be ev-
erywhere all the time.
So, were leaning on
each of you to point me
to the people and the
places and the happen-
ings this summer.
Send me an e-mail at
john@scsconnection.
com.
Call me at (313) 343-
5550.
Send a letter if you
have to. Whatever way
you choose, just let me
know.
The St. Clair Shores
Connection is a commu-
nity newspaper, and
were proud of this fact.
However, being a com-
muni ty newspaper
means we have to reach
out to the community in
order to tell and share
these amazing stories.
Thats what were do-
ing now, and we cant
wait to hear from each
of you.

The theme of the 27th Annual EyesOn Design
Automotive Design show was Automotive Designs
Inuence on Popular Culture and the cars did not
disappoint. Vehicles are chosen based on the years
theme and only by invitation. Approximately 250-
300 cars were on display on Fathers Day on the
grounds of the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House. At
right, this years EyesOn Design Poster Artist,
Nicola Wood stands next to the poster she created
for the 2014 event and in the background is the car, a
1936 Cadillac Aerodynamic V-16 Coupe, used in the
poster.
