Definition of Formwork & Falsework
Formwork: A structure, usually temporary, but
in some cases wholly or partly permanent used
to contain poured concrete to mould it to the
required dimensions and support it until it is able
to support itself.
Falsework: Any temporary structure, which
enables the permanent structure to be
constructed while it is not self-supporting.

7
Introduction of Conventional Formwork System
used in the construction industry for cast in-situ
concrete structures.
materials are mainly timber & plywood.
need to be fully dismantled after being used for
concreting and to be fully re-installed/re-
fabricated for next usage.
requires many skillful and semi-skill workforces
compare to IBS formwork system.
produce a lot of unusable materials, which need
to be properly disposed.

10
Introduction for IBS System Formwork
is an alternative formwork system for cast in-
situ concrete structures.
formwork panels can be re-used without
dismantled/re-installed/re-fabricated after
being used for concreting.
requires less workforces compare to
conventional formwork system.
produce less unusable materials.

Materials for IBS System Formwork
Common material used to form the IBS system
formwork are:
Steel
Proprietary Aluminum Section
Proprietary Timber Girder
Proprietary Plastic Panel
Proprietary Engineered Plywood
18
Main Components of IBS System Formwork
Two type of main components are:
Primary & Secondary - formed by steel,
proprietary aluminum section and proprietary
timber girder.
Formwork surface - formed by steel plate,
proprietary aluminum plate, proprietary plastic
panel and proprietary Engineered Plywood.

ii) Part 2
Design Requirement
Striking/dismantling of Formwork
Work on Site
20
Design Requirement of IBS System Formwork
i) Standards & Acts
The design of IBS system formwork shall comply with
the following standards & acts :-
BS 5975 - Code of practice for temporary works &
falsework
BSEN 12812 - Performance requirement and design for
falsework
BSEN 1065 - Specification for props
BS 5950 - Code of practice for design of steelwork
CIRIA Report 108 - Concrete pressure on formwork
Factories and Machinery Act 1967, Malaysia.
21
ii) Loading
The IBS system formwork shall be designed to cater for
the following loadings :-
Dead loads - self-weight of falsework and formwork
(0.5kN/m2).
Imposed loads - permanent works e.g. wet reinforced
concrete (concrete density of 25kN/m2)and
construction operation (1.5kN/m2) and concrete
pressure.
Lateral Forces - 2.5% of the imposed loads.
Environment loads - wind loads, water pressure and
earth pressure.
22
iii) Design Procedures
The design should be analysed and checked according
to the three main criteria as follows:-
1. Structural strength of members and connections
2. Lateral stability of the structure
3. Overturning of the structure
The drawings, design calculations and specifications
should be prepared in a manner similar to that used for
permanent works.
23
iv) Back Propping
when the imposed load exceeds the capacity of
floor, the load have to be distributed through the
floor and other floors by back propping.
materials used for back propping are steel frame
scaffolding, proprietary shoring system, steel prop
and etc.
the back propping should be properly design.
24
Striking/dismantling of IBS System Formwork
Striking of Vertical Formwork
- walls, columns and beams side form
- a minimum value of in-situ concrete cube
strength of 2N/mm2 is generally recommended.
Striking of Horizontal Formwork
- beams and slabs soffit form
- a minimum concrete cube strength must be
justified by the calculation.
25
Work on Site for IBS System Formwork
erection, alteration and striking/dismantling of
shall be performed by competent/skill workers
and supervised by qualified site personnel.
must be properly inspected prior to the
concreting of each structure.
the result of inspection shall be recorded in
writing and action taken to correct any faults.
