2 Handling TEMS: An Introduction

MN1788EU08MN_0001
5
Siemens TEMS

This chapter will give you a short introduction how to handle the TEMS program.
More detailed information can be found:
l In the TEMS User's Manual from ERICSSON
l In the online help of the TEMS program

2.1 Start TEMS

The TEMS program can be started:
l either directly from DOS by entering "tems.exe" as a parameter
l or by opening the TEMS program group and double-clicking the TEMS icon in the
WINDOWS program manager
l or from the WINDOWS file manager

2.2 Enter Password

In the TEMS program, a password can be defined to avoid unauthorized use of
TEMS. If the program has been password protected, the user must enter the correct
password in the beginning to run the TEMS program.
To define a new password or to disable a password:
l Select File
l Select Set password
l Enter and verify a new password or disable a current password

2.3 Enable External Connections

To receive any information from connected and running equipment (mobile station
MS1, mobile station MS2, positioning equipment) it is necessary to allocate serial
communication port(s):
l Select Externals
l Select Enable connections
l Specify the MS1 port, the MS2 port, the positioning port (and the positioning
equipment). Note: The MS2 port and the positioning port are allocated only if the
MS1 port has been allocated successfully.

2.4 Control MS Logging

It is possible to control which information the mobile station should send to the TEMS
computer:
l Select Externals
l Select Control MS logging
l Set checkmarks in the corresponding checkboxes to specify the desired
information (the information is divided into four groups: Layer 3 messages, Layer 2
messages, Mode reports, SMS Broadcast)

Fig. 3 The Control MS logging window

2.5 Scan Frequencies

When the mobile station is in idle mode, it can be forced to scan all frequencies
(channels 1-124). As a result of such a scan, all frequencies with RxLev greater than
zero are listed in the Frequency Scanning window:
l Select Control
l Select Frequency scanning
l Click the checkbox if you want to read the BSIC
l Start scanning the frequencies by clicking Scan

Fig. 4 The Frequency scanning window

10 MN1788EU08MN_0001

2.6 Scan Tool

The Scan Tool can be used to select a few (maximum 20) frequencies to be
scanned.
l Select Control
l Select Scan Tool
l Select the MS to be used
l Select a ARFCN from the list
l Click the checkbox for Scan
l Click Monitor and/or Graph if you want to view the scanning in the Scan Tool
Monitor or the Scan Tool Graph. Maximum 5 frequencies can be viewed in the
Scan Tool Graph and maximum 14 frequencies in the Scan Tool Monitor.
l Repeat the last three steps for further (maximum 19) frequencies.

2.7 Cell Selection

If the MS is in idle mode, that means no call has been established, it is possible to
lock it to a specific cell (characterized by its BCCH ARFCN) independent of signal
strength and quality of present neighboring cells. This inhibits cell reselection and
handovers.
l Select Control
l Select Cell Selection
The MS will be locked to the selected frequency until the selection is cleared by
clicking "Clear" or until the MS is restarted.

2.8 Layer 3 Message Control

It is possible to delay, discard, modify, observe and send Layer 3 messages which
are exchanged between the MS and the network.
l Select Control
l Select Control of layer 3 messages
l Create an operation sequence by clicking the DELAY, DISCARD, MODIFY,
OBSERVE, SEND, WAIT or SIGNAL button.

2.9 Monitoring Information

A very useful feature of the TEMS program is the possibility to monitor messages and
status information.
Under the Monitor menu you will find:
l Status information
l Errors
l Mode Reports
l Layer 2 messages
l Layer 3 messages
l SMS Cell Broadcast
l Call Control
l Mobility Management
l Radio Resource
l Supplementary Services
l Short Message Service
l Close all

Under Status information the following status windows can be independently

opened, moved or closed:
l General
l Serving cell (This window presents information about the CI, BSIC, BCCH
ARFCN, MCC, MNC and LAC of the serving cell.)

Fig. 10 The Serving cell window

16 MN1788EU08MN_0001

l Serving + neighboring cells (This window contains information about user defined
cell names, the RxLev, the BSIC and the BCCH ARFCN of the serving cell and the
six neighboring cells with the highest signal strength.)
l Dedicated channel (This window contains information about the dedicated
channel.)
l Radio environment (This window contains information about the radio link: RxLev
and RxQual of the received channel, Timing Advance, Transmission Power level
and Radiolink timeout counter.)
l Graphical presentation (Depending on the settings in the Graphical preferences
window, the following items can be viewed graphically: The signal strength and
quality of the serving cell, the signal strength of the two strongest neighboring cells
and a performed handover displayed as a vertical line.)
l Signals
l Hypothesis test
l MS2 (This window contains information about the serving cell of MS2, the six
neighboring cells of MS2 with the highest signal strength, and the radio link used
by MS2.)

All received messages can be presented in different windows handling different

groups of messages:
l Errors
l Mode Reports
l Layer 2 messages
l Layer 3 messages
l SMS Cell Broadcast
By single clicking on a specific message in the scrolling window, a decoded
description of the message will be displayed.

Specific Layer 3 messages (Call Control, Mobility Management, Radio Resource,

Supplementary Services or Short Message Service) may be selected.

Under Close all a fast possibility to close all monitoring windows is offered to the
user.

2.10 Log Files

Using log files, it is possible to store messages or sequences as they occur and to
replay them later for a more detailed examination.
TEMS automatically creates default file names for the logfiles: MMDD_X.log (MM
means the month, DD stands for the day and X is an increasing counter).
The saving of the logfiles can be performed either manually or it can be initiated by
an automatic logging procedure:
l Select Log
l Select Start logging
or
l Select Log
l Select Automatic logging

34 MN1788EU08MN_0001
TEMS Siemens

Use the TEMS to trace a mobile originating call (MOC):

l Connect TEMS and get an overview of the serving and neighboring cells:
What is the frequency of the serving cell and which are the frequencies of the
neighboring cells? What is the BSIC of the cells?
l Open windows for Layer 2 and Layer 3 traces and open a file where the results
can be saved.
l Set up a MOC.
l Replay the Log file.
l Interpret the layer 2 messages. Especially have a look for the message "connect
acknowledged".
l Compare the different layer messages with the connection setup procedure
discussed in theory.
l Interpret the layer 3 messages.
l What is the time interval for MS measurement reports? When do the measurement
reports start and what is the contents of the measurement reports? (Have a look to
the time stamps).

Do the same exercise for a mobile terminating call (MTC).
