Lesson stages Activities - students and teacher Reasons for activities Materials Timing 1. THE WARM-UP
T tells the students an account of something that happened to her a day before the lesson (I was very hungry yesterday so I went to the fridge, opened it and), but at some point she stops and asks the students to predict what happened next. Ss take turns into answering, until the teacher tells them what really happened. -to warm students up -to revise the Past Simple
- 5 min. 2. LEAD-IN
T asks the Ss to read the dialogue, afterwards they discuss it together and explain what happened. The teacher introduces the past continuous, writes the title of the lesson on the board and Ss write it in their copy- books. -to get the Ss into the new topic
Textbook Notebooks 5 min. 3. PRESENTATION OF THE NEW TOPIC
T asks the students to have a look at some pictures showing Hollywood celebrities performing different actions. By using a model, the Ss have to make up dialogues and write them on the board and their copy-books. -to recognise the new tense (past continuous) -to start using the new tense
Blackboard Students notebooks 20 min. 4. PRACTICE AND PRODUCTION
When the Ss finish creating the dialogues and they are written on the board also, the T explains to them that next they will work in pairs, practising the dialogues aloud. Ss are then asked to think about what they were doing at 7 oclock the day before and ask and answer similar questions about themselves. Then T elicits some Ss to talk about their partners. (e. g. At 7 oclock yesterday, Gina was)
Blackboard Students notebooks 15 min. 5. EVALUATION T grades some Ss and accounts for them. T encourages other students close to getting a good grade and she also assigns their homework (they have to answer some questions about themselves). -to evaluate Ss work -to assign Ss homework 5 min.
