■ The Mecosta County Rod and
Gun Club will be holding sight in days
November 1 through November 14.
Monday through Saturday, sight in
starts at 9:00 a.m. and runs until 4:30
p.m. On Sundays, sight in starts at
10:00 a.m. and runs until 4:30 p.m.
Targets are provided by the club. The
cost for non members is $4.00 per fire-
arm sighted in and members may sight
in at no charge. The club is located 4
miles west of Mecosta on M-20.
■ The Coomer United Method-
ist Church is holding a Star Spangled
Spaghetti Supper from 5 to 7 p.m. on
Friday, Nov. 6. A free-will offering will
be accepted, with a portion of the
proceeds going to the Weidman VFW.
On the menu will be spaghetti, bread,
salad, beverage and pie. The Coomer
United Methodist Church is located at
5410 S. Vandecar Rd.
■ The annual Thanksgiving Dinner
will be hosted again by Mecosta Area
Committee and Chapel of the Lakes
Lutheran Church. This will be held
on Thanksgiving, Nov. 26 at 1:00 at
Chapel of the Lakes Lutheran Church
at 9407 90th Ave. Mecosta. Anyone or
if you know of anyone that is in need
for nourishment of the body, seniors
that are alone, widows, widowers, just
a couple with no family or makes no
sense to cook for 1-2 people or just
don’t want to cook come out and join
the folks that attend for some great fel-
lowship. Much help is needed for this
donations for food and help in cook-
ing. If you would like to lend a hand
in some way to make this another

prizes given to the best 2 floats. The
parade line-up will begin at 5:30 at

where the Community Tree will be lit.
After the lighting everyone is invited to
the township hall for refreshments and
a visit with Santa and gather around
and sing carols to start off the Christ-

to Cheer — Latest Numbers: Wide, Deep & Stable
Everytown, USA - Before the national circulation narrative turns to gloom and doom next week,
there’s plenty of reason to celebrate right now at the community level. Audit data for the first half
of 2009 has just been crunched by Circulation Verification Council (CVC), and their MEDIA FACTS
RELEASE details continued circulation stability across the community and niche publication
sectors. Even better news, lots of actual gains! Circulation gains were reported by: 45 percent of the
publications in the Community Newspaper category; 54 percent of the publications in the Alternative

findings with thousands -- actually tens of thousands -- of independent zip-level phone surveys.
The good news from community papers is even better news for advertisers. Remarkable local
penetration and solid readership numbers are now being met with rising purchase intention scores.
The number of readers indicating they frequently purchase products or services from advertisements
seen in their community and niche publications is up over a point from last year, topping 3 out of 4
with a 75.6% score. “This increase is potentially significant, because purchase intention scores have
been stable for years,” according to CVC President, Tim Bingaman. “A blip in the national average of
one to two percent requires substantial change in purchasing behaviors from existing readers. This
shows that readers are increasingly looking to community and niche publications to research sales
and buying opportunities before spending money.”
Some might rain on this parade out of knee-jerk reaction to free publications, but Holmes points to
the recent move by Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) which now allows product sold for one cent
to count as paid. “The distinction between barely paid and honestly free is now as thin as it can
be,” said Holmes, bringing the high profile battle between Wall Street Journal and USA Today into
context. “I think Nat Ives put it best describing their efforts to discredit each others’ circulation. In
his AdAge post he concluded with today’s wisdom: ‘And plenty of people are increasingly interested
in the simple number of readers, whether they paid for it, read it in a doctor’s office or found it on
the subway.’ And that’s where we’re at, with CVC scrutinizing the numbers, calling readers in our
markets, delivering statistically certain bona fides.”
