Electricity Consumption Analysis 12/19/2013

Table 1: The data was collected from the observation of compressor cycling and unit specifications. The
price per kilowatt hour is determined from a PNM electricity bill dated on October 24, 2013 at a rate of
0.1286451 $/KWH for suite C. The Misc. Electrical column represents all other devices being used such
as lights, computers, HVAC, etc. This value is approximated and is assumed to be constant every month.
The vacuum system is ran constantly throughout machine runtime, therefore only the hours of
operation are considered and all calculations are based on device specifications.

To approximate the runtime a linear function was derived to describe compressor cycling as a function
of time. Based on the compressors approximate cycling per 12 hour day from recorded data. Further
system analysis should include more data on compressor runtime for a higher accuracy in calculations.
For now this approximation seems very reasonable such that the longer the compressor is used in a day,
the more it should cycle in a day.

Figure 1: The approximate compressor cycling was used to determine the cost per month as a function
of the runtime per day. Runtime hours per day is assumed constant all month every day for each cost
calculation. Therefore further data collection of the compressor cycling must be done for a higher
accuracy in calculations. However, based on the linear relationship of the compressor cycling to the
compressor runtime the values seem to be a very reasonable approximation relative to the PNM usage
data.
Thus the cost per month can be described as a function of the runtime per day. Where t is in hours.

Figure 2: The cost per month was used to determine the cost per year. Assuming the compressor cycling
is a linear function of time.

Therefore the cost per year can be describe as a function of the runtime per day. Where t is in hours.

Figure 3: The overall electricity consumption for suite C is represented. The Misc. Electrical Devices
portion accounts for everything else that is being used (lights, computers, HVAC, etc.). Without further
analysis of each device being used we must assume this approximation is relatively reasonable and
somewhat constant. The major factor that will effect this percentage would be the HVAC system with
respect to relative climate and seasonal conditions. This value may vary marginally over long term
analysis.
