Before you begin to install this product, read the following safety information.
Safety Information-English
DANGER
To avoid a shock hazard, do not connect or disconnect any cables
or perform installation, maintenance, or reconfiguration of this
product during an electrical storm.
DANGER
To avoid shock hazard:
The power cord must be connected to a properly wired and
earthed receptacle.
Any equipment to which this product will be attached must also
be connected to properly wired receptacles.
DANGER
When possible, use one hand to connect or disconnect signal
cables to prevent a possible shock from touching two surfaces
with different electrical potentials.

Lead Acid Battery Instructions
Caution, lead acid battery instructions:
This product feature contains a sealed lead acid battery. Only qualied service
personnel should attempt to remove or replace the battery.
Do not open, throw in re, or short circuit battery. If battery is damaged or leaking,
do not touch with bare hands.
For continued protection against risk of re, the battery cable fuse must be replaced
with a fuse of the same type and rating. Only qualied service personnel should
attempt to replace the battery cable fuse.

Lithium Battery Instructions
Caution:
A lithium battery can cause a re, an explosion, or a severe burn. Do not recharge,
disassemble, heat above 100 degree C (212 degree F), solder directly to the cell,
incinerate, or expose the cell contents to water.
Keep away from children.
Replace only with the part number specied for this IBM product. Use of a different
battery may present a risk of re or explosion. The battery connector is polarized;
do not attempt to reverse the polarity.
Dispose of the battery according to local regulations.

The IBM 4614 SureOne Point-of-Sale Terminal is specically designed for retailers.
It combines cost-efficiency and performance with the elegance and reliability of
point-of-sale packaging. The computer, keyboard, credit card reader (MSR), impact
receipt printer/ thermal receipt printer, and video display are integrated into one
compact unit. Nonvolatile memory is standard on every SureOne to protect
transaction data in the event of a power outage. SureOne facilitates networking
capability that ensures clear communication between multiple terminals.
Optional features include a journal take-up spool (for the impact printer only), a
two-line, 20-character customer display, and a cash drawer. Scanners, check
readers, pin pads, and other optional devices designed to save you time and money
are easily connected to the SureOne via the four RS232 communication ports.

Video Display Controls and Indicators
Power Button
Use this button to power ON and OFF the video display. This button only
controls the display. The system unit power must be ON.
Power Indicator
The video display has power and is ready to display when the indicator is
on.
Brightness
Controls the brightness level of the displayed image.
Contrast
Controls the contrast level of the displayed image.
Left or Right
Controls the left and right location of the displayed image.
Height
Controls the height of the displayed image.
Horizontal Size
Controls the horizontal size of the image (color display only).
The video display is mounted on a swivel arm that allows slight adjustment of the
display to the left and right. The display also tilts up and down to adjust the viewing
position for the operator.

Keylock Operation
Operation of the keylock positions is dependent on the application program that is
used by the SureOne. The key is removed from the keylock in any of the three
positions. The arrow in the center of the keylock points to the selected position.
Credit Card Reader (MSR) Operation
1. Align the credit card with the magnetic stripe. The stripe faces the user, and is
at the bottom edge of the card.
2. Place the card in the reader slot.
3. Pass the card through the reader. Most application programs allow you to pass
the card though the reader in either direction.

Ribbon Winding Knob
Use this knob to tighten the ribbon around the print head.
Paper Thickness Lever
Use this lever to adjust print quality depending on the thickness of the
paper. Begin operation by pushing the lever all the way toward the paper
and then pulling the lever two positions toward the print head. The thicker
the paper, the more adjustment toward the print head is required.
Printer Paper Feed and Test Button
Press this button to feed paper through the printer. This button also begins
the printer self-test during printer testing.
Printer-Ready Indicator
The printer is ready for operation when the indicator is on. This indicator will
not light if the front printer cover is not installed correctly.

The printer is capable of printing verication information on a check.
Note: You may need to pull the paper thickness lever toward the front of the
SureOne to allow for increased thickness when inserting a check for verication
printing. Figure 10 shows the correct positioning of the check in the printer.

Impact Printer Ribbon Loading
1. Refer to the arrows in Figure 11 and press inward on both of the indicated
locations and lift the front printer cover up from the printer base.
2. Lower the ribbon cartridge into position on the printer.
3. Refer to Figure 12 and place the ribbon. Wind the knob to remove any slack in
the ribbon around the print head. Use the ribbon winding knob to remove any
slack in the ribbon.
4. Reinstall the ribbon cover. Be sure that the cover sensor tab at the front of the
cover is positioned correctly. This tab is positioned in the cover sensor slot at
the printer base.

Impact Printer Paper Loading
1. Refer to the arrows in Figure 13 and press inward on both of the indicated
locations and rotate the paper cover towards the back of the system unit.
Note: The paper cover is removed from the printer base. Pulling the cover away
can remove the cover completely from the rear of the system unit. If the cover
comes off of the printer base it can be easily replaced by snapping the three
tabs on the cover into the printer base.

2. Refer to Figure 14 and place the paper roll onto the spindle and place the roll
and spindle into the paper reel. The leading edge of the paper should be at the
bottom of the roll and, when pulled from the roll, moves toward the front of the
SureOne.
3. Refer to Figure 14 and thread the paper through the printer as shown; see
gure 9. Use the Paper Feed/Test Button to advance the paper through the
paper guide path. The button only operates if SureOne power is ON.
4. Close (or reinstall) the paper cover. (The cover easily snaps into position in the
printer base module.) Feed the paper that exits the top of the printer through the
slot in the paper cover while you lower the cover into the closed position.

Printer Paper Feed and Test Button

Printer Ready Indicator
The printer is ready for operation when the indicator is on. This indicator will
not light if the front printer cover is installed incorrectly.
Head Up Lever
The head up lever lifts the print head to clear paper jams.
Paper Advance Knob
Turn this knob to manually feed paper through the printer.
Head Open Levers
There are two head open levers located on each side of the printer
mechanism. Unlatch the two head open levers to open the printer
mechanism to clean the print head and to clear paper jams.

Thermal Printer Paper Loading
1. Refer to the arrows in Figure 16 and press inwards on both of the indicated
locations and lift the front printer cover up from the printer base.
Press inward on both of the indicated locations and rotate the paper cover
towards the back of the system unit.
2. Remove the paper roll from the spindle. Remove the paper from the printer
mechanism by pressing the paper feed button.

3. Prepare a roll of paper. Make sure that the leading edge of the paper is cut in a
straight right-angle to the direction of the feed.
4. Place the paper roll onto the spindle and place the roll and spindle into the
paper roll holder. The leading edge of the paper should be at the bottom of the
roll and, when pulled from the roll, moves toward the front of the SureOne.

5. Auto Loading
The thermal printer automatically loads and cuts the paper when inserted under
the paper guide.
v Power ON the SureOne to enable automatic paper load.
v Refer to Figure 19 and insert the edge of the paper under the paper guide.
Continue to insert the paper until the unit automatically advances the paper
through the printer and cutter and is cut. Remove cut paper.
Note: If the paper is not inserted correctly, it will jam. If this happens, pull the
head up lever towards you, turn the paper advance knob until the edge of the
paper protrudes from the printer mechanism. Grab the edge of the paper until it
is moving straight. After conrming that 6 to 8 inches of paper is extending from
the printer, push the head up lever back to the previous position toward the rear
of the system unit.
Hold the edge of the paper and press it against the head and cut it. Be careful
not to cut your hands or ngers on the edge of the cutter unit.

Journal Take-up Paper Loading for Impact Printer
1. Press inward on both of the tab locations on the journal cover. Refer to
Figure 13 on page 13.
2. Rotate the cover toward the back of the system unit.
Pulling the cover away can remove the cover completely from the rear of the
system unit.
Use the Paper Feed/Test Button to advance the paper through the paper guide
path. The button only operates when the SureOne power is ON.

3. Refer to Figure 22 and remove one end cap from the journal take-up spool.
Center the paper on the spindle and place one edge of the paper under one of
the end cap tabs. Reinstall the end cap onto the take-up spool spindle.
4. Wrap the paper several times around the spindle to ensure that the paper will
not become loose from the spindle during operation.
5. Close (or reinstall) the paper cover. The cover easily snaps into position in the
journal extension base. Be sure that the paper is tight around the journal
take-up spool and that the customer receipt paper layer exits through the tear
bar slot.

Impact Printer Paper Width Options
The impact printer can accommodate the following paper roll widths:
v 82.5 mm/3.25 inch
v 58 mm/2.25 inch
Notes:
1. The SureOne impact printer is shipped with paper width that is preset for 3.25
inch-wide paper rolls.
2. Changing paper roll width may require modications to hardware inside the
SureOne. Trained service personnel only perform these changes.
Installing a 58 mm/2.25 inch Wide Paper Roll.
If you want to use a 58 mm/2.25 inch wide paper rolls in the printer, follow the
instructions below. Refer to Figure 23 on page 23.
1. Release the locking tabs.
2. Move the paper guides towards the center of the printer and against the C-Clips
(position 1 ).
3. Lock the locking tabs.
4. Install the paper roll dividers on the paper roll support posts.
Installing a 82.5 mm/3.25 inch Wide Paper Roll.
If you need to change the size back to 3.25 inch wide impact printer rolls:
1. Remove the paper roll dividers from the paper roll support posts.
2. Release the locking tabs.
3. Move the paper guides out from the center of the printer until they line up with
the outside of grooves (position 3 ).
4. Lock the locking tabs.

Customer Display
The optional customer display head tilts slightly for ease of viewing the displayed
image. The display also rotates left and right approximately 340 degrees. If both
customer display posts are unused, rotation of the display is reduced due to
interference from the video display.
Cash Drawer
Keylock Positions.
The cash drawer keylock has three positions:
v Locked closed
v Operate
v Manual open/locked open
The Operate position permits the cash drawer to open under application program
control. The key is in this position while the SureOne is in operation. The key can
be removed while in any of the three positions.

Document Storage Area.
Space is available under the cash drawer for storing documents. Use the slot at the
front of the cash drawer for depositing documents. An adjustment bar inside lets
you adjust the size of the document storage area to suit your needs.
Compact Cash Drawer Coin Roll Opener.
1. Either push or pull the coin roll against the coin roll opener until a score is made
in the outside cover of the coin roll.

Unpacking SureOne
1. Remove the SureOne terminal from the shipping container and place it on a
at surface.
Notes:
a. Do not throw the original shipping container away. Keep for re-use.
b. If the unit is to sit on a large cash drawer, go to page Large Cash Drawer
Preparation on page 34. These additional steps prepare the cash drawer
for appropriate positioning of the system unit.
2. Open the shipping containers for any additional options and accessories to
install on the SureOne.
3. Carefully remove any remaining packing material and packing tape.

4. Remove the rear cable cover panel.
Cover Release Access
The panel is easily removed by pushing a pencil or pen into the cover release
access hole at the rear of the top cover and pressing downward on the two tabs
shown with the arrows, then slide the panel out from the unit.
5. To install an optional journal take-up kit, adapter card, or additional memory
modules, go to the IBM 4614 SureOne Point-of-Sale Terminal: Hardware
Service Manual , GY27-0353, for installation instructions.
6. If you are installing the optional customer display, go to Customer Display
Installation on page 31 and install this feature now.
7. If you are using the SureOne Communications port, install the communications
cable, shipped with your unit, into the connector.

8. Install any other signal cables to other I/O devices into the correct cable ports.
This includes cash drawers that attach to the SureOne.
9. Check that all signal and all power cables are installed in the cable ports.
10. Install the power cord, shipped with your unit, into the connector for System
Unit Power.
Note: Do NOT plug the power cord into a power source outlet or receptacle
until directed to do so.
11. Reinstall the rear cable cover panel.
12. Locate the ribbon cartridge and install it on the impact printer. Refer to Impact
Printer Ribbon Loading on page 12. Ensure that ribbon is routed through the
print head.
13. Load the paper roll into the printer. Refer to Impact Printer Paper Loading on
page 13, Thermal Printer Paper Loading on page 16, Journal Take-up Paper
Loading for Impact Printer on page 20. Be sure that the paper is correctly
routed through the paper guide path, past the print head and that the paper
exits with enough extra paper to feed through the paper cover.
Note: If you are installing paper of a different width from the set-up for the
printer paper feed path in your printer, refer to and make any required
adjustments now.
14. Installation is now completed, go to Chapter 4. Testing and Problem Analysis
on page 37 and test the SureOne for correct operation .

Customer Display Installation
Follow these instructions to install the optional customer display:
1. Unpack the customer display and parts from the shipping container, if not
previously done.
Notes:
a. There are two mounting post options: short and tall. Install either the short
post, the tall post, or both of the posts for additional display height.
b. Remove the protective lm that covers the lens, only after installation is
complete.
2. Locate the Customer Display Filler Cap that is installed on the top of the
SureOne.
3. Using your ngers, press upward from under the cap (accessible with the
SureOne rear cable access panel removed) and remove the ller cap.
4. Locate the customer display cable and insert one of the connectors through the
display yoke and insert the connector into the socket in the display head.
5. Install the display yoke.
6. Select the post (short, tall, or both) you want to install. If you want to combine
both posts for additional display height, press the post end with the eight tabs of
one post into the end of the other post that has no tabs. The upper post can be
either the short post or the tall post.

7. Feed the display cable through the post or posts. The unattached connector end
of the cable should exit the post at the end of the post that has the eight

yoke and the post together to join the two parts. The display head and the yoke
should now pivot approximately 340 degrees around the post.
9. Insert the unattached cable. Extend out of the post through the opening in the
SureOne that contains the Customer Display Filler Cap.
10. Push the bottom of the post (with eight tabs) onto the customer display
opening in the SureOne. Press the post downward to join the post to the
SureOne.
Note: Insert the rib into the slot in the top cover of the system unit.

11. Plug the customer display cable into the correct connector in the rear of the
SureOne.

Large Cash Drawer Preparation
Follow these instructions to prepare a large-size cash drawer for the SureOne.
1. Remove the paper covering from the two pieces of plastic and place the plastic
pieces sticky side down on the cash drawer as shown.
Note: The SureOne is located on either side of the cash drawer.
2. When you have completed installation of this option, go to Step 2 on page 28of
the Installation Instructions.

Testing Installation
When you power on the SureOne POS terminal, the system runs a power-on
self-test (POST). If POST does not nd any errors, the system is ready for
operation.
1. Connect the power cord from SureOne to a properly wired and grounded power
source.
2. Open the front door of the SureOne and press the System Unit Power Button.
Check that the System Unit Power Indicator is on. POST begins as soon as the
SureOne power button is ON.

3. Press the display Power Button on the video display and check that the display

If POST fails or you suspect problems with your terminal (POST signals a failure

Problem Analysis
Software errors or hardware failures can cause problems with SureOne. This
chapter contains a checklist and troubleshooting table to help determine the cause
of a problem and how to solve it.
Preliminary Checklist
If you have a problem with SureOne, use the following checklist:
1. Make sure that all I/O devices are connected.
2. Make sure that the contrast controls and the brightness controls are adjusted.
3. Make sure that the correct diskette (if required) is inserted.
4. Try another diskette.
5. Make sure that all hardware devices installed (such as a memory module,
feature card, printer, or mouse) are connected.
6. POWER the SureOne OFF, then power the SureOne ON again. Watch for
completion of POST. Indications of a successful completion of POST are:
v The video display is ready for keyboard input.
v The printer-ready indicator is on.
v A single short beep at the completion of POST.

If the problem still exists after performing these preliminary checks, record any error
messages or symptoms and contact your service technician. If you do not receive
an error message or observe a symptom, see Table 1.
Problem Analysis
If SureOne fails see the table below, search for a description of the problem. Follow
the procedures that are described in the table. If you cannot solve the problem, call
your service technician.

v Make sure the diskette is inserted in the drive correctly.
v Try to read a diskette that you know is OK. If it works,
the rst diskette may be bad.
Cannot send information (write) to diskette; cannot format
diskette.
v Make sure the diskette is formatted correctly.
v Make sure the diskette is not write-protected.
v Make sure you are sending information to the correct
drive.
v Make sure there is space on the diskette for the
information. (Try using a blank, formatted diskette.)
Keyboard does not work or only some keys work.
v Move your ngers across the keys. Make sure no keys
are stuck.
v Power OFF the SureOne and then power ON the
SureOne.
I/O error
v Make sure the I/O device is connected correctly to the
system unit.
Totally blank screen, no cursor displayed, screen is
unreadable or other display problems
v Check that the terminal and display cables are
securely connected.
v Check that the terminal and display are powered ON.
v Check that the power indicator lights are on.
v Adjust contrast and brightness controls on the display.

Printer Self-Test Integrated Printer not working.
v To run the printer self-test, press and hold the paper
feed button while powering on the system. The printer
prints out the self-test pattern. Call for service, if this
test fails.
v For externally attached printers, refer to the
manufacturer publications.
Notes:
1. Some devices that attach to the system have test instructions. Refer to those
instructions when testing those devices.
2. Record any error messages or symptoms for future reference, particularly, when
calling for service.
3. When using application software, you may receive error messages that pertain
to the software. Refer to the application program software manual for a
description of those messages.
4. Call your service technician.

Chapter 5. Adjusting System Conguration
Usually, you do not need to run system conguration because the terminal does
most conguration activities automatically. If there are any addressing conicts,
messages displayed during POST identify the conicts. Enter Setup to correct any
conguration problems.
You need to perform system conguration in the following cases:
v To change any serial port (COM) addresses or interrupt levels
v To start the terminal off a local area network (LAN)
v To change some of the addressing defaults
You can adjust conguration by entering Setup during POST.
Note:
For updates to the IBM 4614 SureOne Point-of Sale Terminal: Service Diskette ,
see Appendix B.
Entering Setup
To enter Setup, press F2 when prompted during POST.
When you start the system conguration program, the rst screen you see is the
Main menu. Many of these values are set by the program when you power on the
SureOne. You can change the system date and time from this menu.
Using the arrow keys, select the option that you want to change. Press the Space
key to change the value. If you want more help, press the F1 key.
Press the PgDn key to see the next screen of Setup.
The second screen is the COM Ports menu. Use this menu to adjust COM port
addresses or interrupt levels.
Press the PgDn key to see the last screen of Setup.
The third screen is the ASIC Options menu. Use this menu to change the BOOT
Source for the SureOne. BOOT SOURCES refer to the order in which POST
looks for a valid boot load. A standard PC looks rst at drive A; then at drive C.
Most PCs typically have no third start source. The SureOne does have a third
option since it can perform a remote program load (RPL) off of a LAN.
Go to Chapter 4. Testing and Problem Analysis on page 37 to test the SureOne if
you change or adjust any addresses or interrupt levels.
