PGT stands for Post Graduate Teacher and most of us confuse this position with TGT, which stands for Trained
Graduate Teachers. PGT position denotes Post Graduate Teachers, who offer education for students belonging
to class 10 and above and TGT denotes Trained Graduate Teachers, who offer education to classes below 10th
standard. The pay scale for the position of PGT in government jobs in India is Rs.9300-34800 with GP of
Rs.4800 and even some government companies appoint candidates for the position of Post Graduate Teachers
on a monthly-consolidated pay basis.

Educational qualification for the position of PGT:
Normally, candidates looking to find job in the position of Post Graduate Teacher, must be PG degree holders
with not less than 50% of marks in a particular subject and they should also possess Bachelor of Education
course completion certificate. For instance, if a government-run educational institution calls for applications from
eligible candidates for the position of PGT (Commerce), candidates must have completed their Masters degree
in Commerce along with Bachelor of Education course. Nowadays, most of the government institutions give
preference to candidates with computer knowledge for this position.
Mode of Selection:
Mostly, written test is followed as the initial step in the process of selection of candidates for the position of PGT
and only selected candidates, who succeed in the written test is called for interview.
Age requirement:
The maximum age limit to apply for the position of Post Graduate Teacher in Government organizations in India
is 40 years.
What are the job responsibilities of a Post Graduate Teacher?
Post Graduate Teachers are normally appointed for the purpose of offering education to the students in their 10,
11 and 12 classes, which indicates that they teach for higher secondary education and offering the best education
to the students of these classes is the most important responsibility of a Post Graduate Teacher. Since the marks
secured by the students in these years, decide their future, PGTs should be skilled enough to offer quality
education in an understandable manner. Therefore, PGTs play an important role in shaping the future of the
students in their teenage.
