COEFFICIENT OF STATIC AND KINETIC FRICTION ON INCLINED
FIELD
I. The Purpose of Experiment
1. Determine the coefficient of static friction objects moving sliding on an
inclined plane.
2. Determine the coefficient of kinetic friction objects moving sliding on an
inclined plane.
II. Based Theory
If an object is located on a flat surface and there is no force that we give to
these objects, there will be an equilibrium between the forces of the object (W) is
the reaction force is carried by the direction opposite to the surface gravity
objects, this force is known as normal force (N). For more details, as like figure 1.

Figure 1.
If the flat plane gradually tilted then on working object caused by gravity
components downward direction. In response contiguity between objects with
the incline reaction force arises in the form of frictional forces. Frictional forces
between two solid objects is divided into two, namely the static friction force
and kinetic friction force. Operation of frictional forces can be seen in Figure 2.
3

Figure 2
When the angle is small so that the magnitude of the frictional force is
greater than the downward force, then the object remains state. But if the
angle is enlarged then some when the frictional forces (F
friction
) will be
equal to the downward force.

F
friction
= W sin (1)
Where, W = weight (N)
= angle of inclination

Frictional forces that work since flat field begin tilted until object just
begin move recognized with static friction force. The magnitude of the
static friction force is:

F
static friction
= s N (2)
Where,
s
= coefficient of static friction
N = normal force = W cos

When the object will move, the F static friction reaches its maximum
value. By combining equations (1) and equation (2), then :

4

s
would be even greater if the surface of the object is getting rough.
Instead
s
increasingly getting smaller if the surface is smooth or slippery.
When the angle is enlarged again the object will slide down the surface of
objects with surface will cause the kinetic frictional force and great force
are:
F

k = coefficient of kinetic friction
F = W sin k N

III. Equipment
1. Sliding board
2. Stopwatch
3. Ruler
4. Two Wooden Blocks (A and B)
IV. Method:
1. Calibrate the ohaus balance.
2. Measure the mass of wooden block A and wooden block B by using
Ohaus balance that has been calibrate.
5

3. Put the wooden block A on the sliding board , and mark the position of
wooden block A on the board. Measure the length of sliding board that be
passed by the wooden block A (St).
4. Lift the sliding board slowly until the wooden block A just begin to move.
5. And then measure the vertical position of wooden block A (y) and the
horizontal position of wooden block A (x).
6. Lift the sliding field slightly upward until the wooden block A sliding.
After that use the stopwatch to measure time required during the wooden
block A is sliding.
7. Repeat the step 3, 4,5 in 5 times repetition for wooden block B.
