In J. Willard Marriotts words, Take care of your employees and they will take care of your
customers. Marriott Hotels being a part of the hospitality industry follow the philosophy of
People First. J.W. Marriott junior said that guest's room may be our product, but our associate's
caring attitude is our value. We can deliver that value only if we can attract, retain and inspire the
best people - with what we call 'The Spirit to Serve.'
Marriotts investment in training and communication is exceptional. There are programs like
VOYAGE - a graduate training program aimed at training and retaining good talent
SAIL - undergraduate training program.
Initiatives such as Fresh Eyes- a forum wherein HR heads invite the new associates to
share their experience of their first 30 days, and Get On Board- a formal guidance
session with regards to duties, position, etc., for fresh managers.
One of the best HR practices followed by Marriott is treating even their junior associates to a
one-night stay in a Marriott hotel on their birthdays, with their families. It not only gives the
employees a feel of what it's like to be on the other side of the table but also makes for a great
present.
A customer who checked into one of the Marriott hotels for the night had recently learnt of the
sisters death. As she checked into the hotel, Charles, who was looking after room service, asked
her why she was upset. On hearing her reply he assured her that they would be there if any help
was needed and that she was not among strangers. He brought her coffee, apple pie, and flowers,
all at his own expense.
We think a simple incident such as this truly shows the values that Marriott stands for.










Environmental Initiatives
The company formed an Executive Green Council in 2007 to catalyze sustainability beyond
water and energy conservation and collaborated with Conservation International, a global
environmental NGO based in Northern Virginia, to set the following goals:

Marriotts Spirit to Preserve Goals:

Further reduce energy and water consumption by 25 percent per available room by
2017; Expand our green hotel development ten-fold in five years; Green our multi-billion
dollar supply chain; Educate and inspire associates and guests to support the
environment; Address environmental challenges through innovative conservation initiatives
including rainforest protection and water conservation.
The company is on track to achieve its 25 percent energy and water reduction goal.
Marriott has reduced its energy consumption by 11 percent, greenhouse gas emissions
by 10.7 percent, and water consumption by 8.2 percent per available room in the last two
years.
