A robot navigates a black trail by using a sensor during a demonstration at Hartford Schools GAP Showcase last Wednesday night.
Teams of sixth-grade students demonstrated robots they created. The robots responded automatically to noise and were able to per-
form a variety of tasks, such as play a song, throw a ball and parallel park.

A bear
affair
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
He took down a bird feeder,
went for a swim in a pond and
took some time to tweet about his
adventures.
For six days, a black bear be-
came the talk of the town in Eve-
sham and Mt. Laurel.
Local residents kept their eyes
peeled for the bear, which was
first reported in Evesham on
Thursday, June 12. The township
posted a picture of the bear eating
out of a bird feeder near the side
of the road.
On Saturday, Evesham officials
said the bear was seen in Kings
Grant, Barton Run and near the
Memorial Sports Complex before
disappearing into the woods.
Township officials were not
pleased with the lack of action
from the state Division of Fish
and Wildlife. A post on the town-
ships Facebook page said the
state refused to sedate and relo-
cate the bear. Mayor Randy
Brown, council, township manag-
er Bill Cromie and deputy town-
ship manager Monica Vanden-
berg signed the post, saying the di-
visions decision was frustrating
to the township and makes little

W
e realize that you may have
other, more pressing con-
cerns on your mind. After
all, summer has officially started, the
kids are out of school, its hot, its
rainy, then its hot again.
Youd rather be by a pool or at the
beach, avoiding the South Jersey bear
or the Jersey Shore shark, planning
your Fourth of July celebrations, your
family vacation, or pondering the silli-
ness of the government making salt
water taffy the states official candy.
And yes, we realize that late June is
not typically the time for reflection.
That is usually reserved for the wan-
ing days of December and the begin-
ning of a new year.
But for us at Elauwit Media, weve
spent the last few months looking
back, and well be spending a chunk of
our summer doing the same.
Thats because, come August, well
be turning 10 years old. Our first
newspaper, The Haddonfield Sun, de-
buted in August 2004. Since then,
weve expanded quite a bit.
Along the way, we have some great
memories. Weve made great contacts,
some great friends and have done our
best to serve the residents of every
town we cover.
Now, its time to reflect on those 10
years. This summer, well be celebrat-
ing the last decade, and we want your
input.
What has the last 10 years meant to
you? What does your life look like
today compared to what it looked like
in 2004? What does any stretch of 10
years mean in a larger sense?
Over the summer, well be compil-
ing stories, photos and more that help
us paint a picture of what 2004-2014
has meant, both to us specifically and
to the town and its residents.
If youd like to be a part of this ef-
fort, if youd like to contribute your
thoughts, your insights, your stories
and your photos, please send an email
to tronaldson@elauwitmedia.com.
Were involving our readers in our
10-year celebration because you are
the reason we started our first Sun
newspaper, you are the reason we
started more, and you are the reason
we continue to publish every week.
The last 10 years have been great for
us, and we hope they have been equal-
ly as great for you.
Help us reflect on these past 10 years
as we prepare for the next 10, and
hopefully even more.
Help us as we celebrate 10 years
We want your input on what the last decade has meant to you
Help us out
We want to hear your stories and see your
photos from the last 10 years. Send them
in to tronaldson@elauwitmedia.com with
the subject line 10-year celebration.
School district holds awards ceremony
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
For more than 30 years, Parkway Ele-
mentary School teacher Linda Porco has
taught in the same classroom. Since 1978,
she has seen generations of second-grade
students come and go. Next year will be the
first time in 36 years someone other than
Porco will be teaching in her room.
Before sailing off into retirement, Porco
and 32 of her colleagues were recognized
one more time at last weeks Mt. Laurel
Board of Education meeting.
The school district held an awards cere-
mony for 33 retiring staff members and 11
members celebrating 25 years of work in
Mt. Laurel schools. The ceremony was held
at the beginning of the Board of Education
meeting, with a reception held prior to the
ceremony. Administrators and board mem-
bers made their way around the gym and
personally thanked each honoree for their
service to the district.
Tuesday's ceremony was a culmination
of a long but enjoyable career for Porco.
She said she was very happy after the cere-
mony, but will miss her students.
I'll miss laughing with the kids, she
said. Being able to laugh with them every
single day.
Porco's career has motivated more than
just her students. Both of her sons are also
teachers. Joseph Porco is a history and eco-
nomics teacher at Lenape High School,
while Jonathan Porco is a music teacher
and marching band director at Absegami
High School.
Another person who touched Mt. Laurel
students from a young age is Larchmont
kindergarten teacher Karen Beatty. Beatty
came to Larchmont in 1990 after serving as
a kindergarten aide and basic skills
teacher the previous two years. She said
she is able to leave the school on a happy
note.
I have a grandchild now, Beatty said
with a smile. I am looking forward to
doing a lot with my family.

All retiring staff members
receive a small trophy
Beatty won an award in 2005
for creating an original lesson for
Activboard, an interactive, virtu-
al version of a blackboard. As a
result of winning the award,
Beatty traveled to England for the
International Research Summit
to observe Activboard instruction
overseas.
Despite this accomplishment,
Beatty said her fellow
colleagues are what she'll remem-
ber most about her time at Larch-
mont.
I'm really going to miss the
people I work with, she said.
The sense of community
among the staff was apparent at
the ceremony.
Teachers from different
schools engaged in conversation
prior to the event and loudly ap-
plauded each honoree as they
were called up for their award.
All retiring staff members re-
ceived a small trophy, while staff
members celebrating 25 years re-
ceived a plaque.
Superintendent Antoinette
Rath said it is not enough to just
read the names of the retirees
during the Board of Education
meeting and thank them for their
service. She stated the impor-
tance of honoring each member
individually and giving them a
small gift.
For Porco, the ceremony is
something she will remember for-
ever.
It was a wonderful tribute for
all of the teachers, she said.

North 34th Street, Camden, on
June 17 for hindering his own ap-
prehension.
Subsequent to a motor vehicle
stop on Route 73 in the area of
Rogers Walk at 1:26 a.m., he pro-
vided false information to police
in an effort to avoid arrest on out-
standing warrants. He was

mons pending a municipal court

Bear left township last week
sense.
Township officials could not be
reached for further comment.
In response, the states Division
of Fish and Wildlife preferred to
allow the bear to continue on its
way rather than relocate it. The
bear was not to be sedated unless
it posed a threat to residents or
property.
After spending the weekend in
Evesham, the bear reappeared in
Mt. Laurel last Monday morning.
Early reports indicated the bear
was seen near the intersection of
Mt. Laurel Road and Haines-
port/Mt. Laurel Road.
Hillside Elementary School
was hosting its field day on Mon-
day when reports came in saying
the bear was in the schools vicini-
ty. School district director of com-
munications Marie Reynolds said
the bear was not seen near any of
the schools, and field day activi-
ties went on without a hitch.
Updates on the bears where-
abouts did not just come from the
local authorities. A Twitter ac-
count, @Mtlaurelbear, began to
talk to followers on Tuesday
morning, around the time when
the bear was reported to be wan-
dering around the Birchfield de-
velopment off Union Mill Road.
It's great to be back in Mt. Lau-
rel! Think I'll stop by the Birch-
field pool or pond today, the
bear said.
The Twitter account was origi-
nally created last year. In 2013, a
black bear wandered residential
communities such as Delran,
Moorestown and Mt. Laurel, cap-
turing the attention of local resi-
dents.
The appearance of bears the
last two years has some residents
wondering if more will wander
into the area in the future. Bob
Considine from the state Division
of Fish and Wildlife said bears are
most commonly found in the
northwestern section of the state.
However, there has been an in-
crease in bear reports in Burling-
ton County. There were 30 uncon-
firmed reports last year, up from
22 reports in 2012.
Id say its uncommon, but not
unheard of, Considine said of
bear activity in the county.
Considine acknowledged there
has been a trend of bears migrat-
ing south through New Jersey, but
it is difficult to tell whether it will
continue long-term.
Were getting more sightings
in Central Jersey this year, but
(bear sightings) happen every
year, he said.
The Division of Fish and
Wildlife provides tips for those
who encounter bears in their
neighborhood. Among these are
avoid eye contact with the bear,
make noise by banging pots and
pans, and back away slowly from
the bear instead of running.
For now, Mt. Laurel is bear-free
once again. Mt. Laurel Police said
the bear left the township last
Tuesday evening, departing east
for Hainesport Township. As of
the morning of June 19, he had
traveled north of the Rancocas
Creek and into Westampton
Township and Mt. Holly. There
have been no reports of injuries
or property damage in connection
with the bear.

BEAR SAFETY TIPS
If a bear enters your home, provide it with an escape route by
propping all doors open.
Avoid direct eye contact and never run from a bear. Instead, slow-
ly back away.
To scare the bear away, make loud noises by yelling, banging pots
and pans or using an air horn. Make yourself look as big as possible
by waving your arms. If you are with someone else, stand close
together with your arms raised above your head.
The bear may utter a series of huffs, make popping jaw sounds by
snapping its jaws and swat the ground. These are warning signs that
you are too close. Slowly back away, avoid direct eye contact and do
not run.
If a bear stands on its hind legs or moves closer, it may be trying
to get a better view or detect scents in the air. It is usually not a
threatening behavior.
Black bears will sometimes bluff charge when cornered, threat-
ened or attempting to steal food. Stand your ground, avoid direct eye
contact, then slowly back away and do not run.
If the bear does not leave, move to a secure area.
Immediately notify the Department of Environmental Protections
24-hour, toll-free hotline at (877) 927-6337.
Families who live in areas with high black bear populations should
have a Bear Plan in place for children, with whistles, air horns and
an escape route.
Black bear attacks are extremely rare. If a black bear does attack,
fight back.

Approximately 50 Lenape High
School ChemClub members par-
ticipated in the Annual Science
Outreach program at Hartford
School in Mt. Laurel.
Each group of high school stu-
dents presented an 80-minute les-
son to a room full of sixth-grade
students. They designed their
own lessons, which consisted of
many chemical demonstrations
and hands-on activities for the
kids to do along with them.
The program has now come
full circle, with the students cur-
rently presenting having once
been spectators of the same pro-
gram approximately six years ago
at Hartford.
The ChemClub students have
said that their experience six
years ago was a positive one and
that they wanted to give the same
experience back to promote a love
of science in a curious young sci-
entific mind, said Kim Condur-
so, the advisor for the ChemClub.

Adriana Santomero
wins NHS scholarship
Adriana Santomero, a Lenape
High School senior and president
of the National Honor Society,
has been named one of 53 state
winners in the National Honor
Society Scholarship from NASSP.
Two hundred NHS finalists were
first chosen from among nearly
5,000 applicants. From the 200 fi-
nalists, 53 state winners were se-
lected.
Each state winner receives a
$1,500 college scholarship.
Participating National Honor
Society chapters from across the
country nominated at least two
senior members to compete in
this years program.
Finalists were selected on the
basis of their leadership skills,
participation in service organiza-
tions, clubs and other student
groups at school and in the com-
munity, and their academic
record.
As a state winner, Santomero is
recognized as one of the top 53
NHS members in the nation this
school year.
We are proud to recognize
Santomero for her outstanding
achievements and contributions
to her school, said Ann Postle-
waite, NASSP director of student
programs.
Students nominated for the
NHS Scholarship not only demon-
strate academic excellence, but
also extraordinary performance
in service, leadership, and char-
acter traits that are more impor-
tant today than ever before. In
recognizing leadership and in-
volvement in student activities as
well as strong academic perform-
ance, the NHS Scholarship ac-
knowledges the importance of a
well-rounded education.
