Pro#ide and install Areo Powers 33/ gal Parallel $orrugated Plate >ra#ity 'isplacement
(il)&ater *eparator with capacity and dimensions indicated in. *eparator;s< shall be

(il)&ater *eparators shall be standard prefabricated cylindrical units of the parallel
corrugated plate, gra#ity displacement type as specified herein and as described in
A.P.I. Publication 421. (il)&ater *eparator shall be designed for gra#ity separation of
non emulsified oil and other petroleum products from the waste water stream, along with
some settleable solids. The source of the influent to the separator shall be gra#ity flow
from stormwater runoff, hydrocarbon spills, and)or cleaning)maintenance operations.

Parallel)$orrugated plate separator shall be a manufacturer standard unit and be
completely shop fabricated, inspected and tested for lea7age before shipment from the
factory as a completely assembled #essel ready for installation.
*eparator shall be designed for earth, li#e load, and hydrostatic pressures as dictated by
site conditions on the drawings.
"ach separator unit shall consist of inlet and outlet connections through the tan7 heads,
non%clogging flow distributor and energy dissipater de#ice, stationary under flow baffle,
presettling chamber for solids, sludge baffle, oil coalescing chamber with parallel
corrugated plates to optimiAe separation of free oil from li8uid carrier, effluent
downcomer positioned to pre#ent discharge of free oil that has been separated from the
carrier li8uid, access manways or hatches for each chamber, fittings for #ent, oil pump%
out, sampling, gauging, and lifting lugs. 4low through the unit shall be by gra#ity with
maximum head loss through the unit of one foot, meeting in#ert ele#ations as dictated by
contract drawings.

(il *eparator shall be standard prefabricated parallel corrugated plate gra#ity
displacement type unit.
The separator shall be cylindrical and capacities, dimensions, construction, and
thic7ness shall be in strict accordance with 5nderwriters 6aboratories, *ubEect 5.6.%32
*tandard for *afety, *teel 5nderground Tan7s for 4lammable and $ombustible 6i8uids.
5se minimum ,)1- inch minimum thic7 carbon steel plate conforming to A.*.T.. A ,-.
&eld in accordance with A.&.*. '1.1 to pro#ide a watertight tan7 that will not warp or
deform excessi#ely under load. 5se 8ualified welders in accordance with A.&.*. ,
*tandard Fualification Publication. >rind all welds smooth and remo#e weld splatter.
4abricate neatly and accurately free of 7in7s and sharp bends in a manner not to reduce
the strength of the steel to a #alue less than that intended by design. *iAe and shape of

Parallel corrugated plates shall be at an angle from 4/ to -/ degrees with respect to the
longitudinal axis of the plate corrugations and spaced not less than 1)4 inch and not
more than 1 1)2 inch apart for remo#al of free oil and solids buildup on plates. 4low
through plate pac7s shall be in a downflow mode parallel to place corrugations or
crossflow perpendicular to plate corrugations so that oil collects and coalesces at the
high points of corrugations and rises to the top of the plate pac7 without clogging from oil
or settleable solids.
!emo#able polypropylene impingement coalescer shall be designed to intercept oil
globules of less than 2/ microns in diameter to produce an effluent 8uality of less than
1/ ppm free oil.

The waste oil storage shall be an integral part of the separator, and ha#e a capacity of
4/ percent of the total separatorGs #olume.

*eparator shall be furnished with intrinsically safe oil le#el controls to acti#ate high le#el
alarm at a predetermined oil le#el to notify personnel when oil water separator re8uires
pump out. The annunciation must be audible and #isual. All components enclosed in
common 0"A ,! enclosure.
..10 An internal effluent downcomer at the outlet end of the separator, to allow for
discharge from the bottom of the separation chamber only.

straps with dielectric liners to hold the tan7 securely in place as recommended by the
manufacturer.

Inspect materials deli#ered to site for damage= unload and store with minimum handling.
*tore materials on site in enclosures or under protecti#e coatings. Ade8uately protect
materials not suitable for outdoor storage to pre#ent damage during periods of inclement
weather, including subfreeAing temperatures, precipitation, and high winds. *tore all
materials susceptible to deterioration by direct sunlight under co#er and a#oid damage
due to high temperatures. 'o not store materials directly on the ground. If special
precautions are re8uired, prominently and legibly stencil instructions for such
precautions on outside of e8uipment or its crating.

Iandling and placing of coated steel tan7s shall be done with care and in a manner that
will minimiAe damage of the coating and will not reduce the protecti#e effecti#eness of
the coating. $arry and do not drag materials. The coated tan7s shall be placed
carefully in position with a minimum of handling. All damaged surfaces which occur
during these operations shall be repaired by and at the expense of the $ontractor.

(il *eparators shall be installed in locations shown on the drawings and in strict
accordance with the manufacturerGs recommendations. 4or all underground tan7s, bac7%
fill shall not be started until the in%place tan7 has been inspected and certified by the
$ontracting (fficer to be ready for bac7filling.
0. >UALIT? ASSURANCE PRO@ISIONS

"xamine each component of separator for compliance with re8uirements specified Part ,
% $(0*T!5$TI(0. This element of inspection shall encompass #isual examinations
and dimensional measurements. 0oncompliance with specified re8uirements, or
presence of one or more defects pre#enting or lessening maximum efficiency of
separator operation, shall constitute cause for reEection.
0.) Pre"e&" :r#ce-%re
After separator has been le#eled, hydrostatically rest unit for 4 hours by filling with
potable water prior to bac7filling. Acceptance criteria for this test is no lea7age for 4
hours.
0.. Te&"&
After the hydrostatic test has been successfully completed and unit has been properly
connected to influent and effluent piping, allow influent oil%in%water mixture of ,// ppm
as pre#iously described in paragraphB Performance to flow into separator filled with
potable water. After inEection, operate unit for repeated #olume changes prior to testing
for containment remo#al.

The contractor shall test the effluent to ensure that it meets oil concentration le#els
described in paragraph P"!4(!A0$". Test shall be performed by an independent
certified testing laboratory.

Test and sample preser#ation methods for test contaminants shall be in accordance with
the latest re#ision of "PA ethods for $hemical Analysis of &ater and &astes. "ffluent
oil concentration shall be measured by the *oxhlet "xtraction method.

(il separators shall meet performance characteristics related to influent characteristics
as stated. Testing reports or anufacturerGs $ertificate of Performance $ompliance
shall be submitted to the $ontracting (fficer. If testing indicates that the system does
not meet design re8uirements all correcti#e measures shall be ta7en as necessary to
achie#e design re8uirements at no additional cost to the >o#ernment.
1. SUBMITTALS
1.1 S;#: Dr2i!,&
*hop drawings for separator shall be submitted in accordance with the $(0T!A$T
$6A5*"* and shall show principle dimensions and locations of all fittings. 'esign
calculations shall reflect that oil)water separator is in conformance with effluent
re8uirements when operating under detailed influent conditions. These should show
calculation for rise rate, specific gra#ity, water temperature, droplet siAe remo#al rate,
and remo#al efficiency. *hop drawings shall include brochures, catalog cuts, structural
calculations, dimensions, and location of accessories.
1.) Re:#r"& !- Cer"i+ic"e&
*ubmit a complete signed report of results of inspection, operation, adEustments and
tests. !eport shall include detailed descriptions of points inspected, tests and
adEustments made, and 8uantitati#e results obtained. Include a anufacturer $ertificate
of $ompliance that e8uipment conforms to specified re8uirements and is ready for
permanent operation.

Pre%operational test report shall be submitted by the $ontractor. !eport shall document
all inspections, operations, and tests performed and shall indicate whether they were
acceptable or not. 4or unacceptable items, describe correcti#e action ta7en or
recommended.

accordance with the coating system, manufacturerGs printed recommendations in the
case of manufactured unit.

Pro#ide three complete sets of installation, operation, and maintenance instructions for
manufactured separator that contain clear and concise descriptions of installation,

B0oteB The 56 0o.32 % type I constructed tan7 shall ha#e a double shell with a space
between the layers. The inner primary containment tan7 ;including pipe
connections, manholes, etc.< shall be constructed in strict conformance with
56%32. $onstruction of the outer secondary containment wrap shall be separate
from the inner primary containment tan7, but in direct contact with the primary
tan7= where, the inner tan7 is completely contained within the outer wrap, it. the
outer wrap co#ers ,-/ degrees ;1//K of the tan7 #olume<. this space between
the inner and outer walls shall be monitored with an appro#ed electronic lea7
detection de#ice through a pipe which extends #ertically to the top of the tan7
from a small sump at the bottom.
An audible and #isual lea7 detection alarm system which indicates hydrocarbon
and)or water in the interstice, and can differentiate between either shall be pro#ided.
The control panel shall contain both the oil le#el sensor and lea7 detection controls
with all components enclosed in common 0"A ,! enclosure.L
