GENERAL INFORMATION
Geographic position
Croatia extends from the east-
erly edges of the Alps through the
Pannonian lowlands to the banks of
the Danube in the east. Its central
region is covered by the Dinara
mountain range. The coastline
stretches along the Adriatic Sea,
from the Istrian peninsula in the
north to the city of Dubrovnik in the
south.
Surface area
The mainland covers an area of
56,594 km2. Its territorial waters
cover a surface area of 31,067 km2.
Population
4,437,460 inhabitants.
Composition of population
The majority of the population are
Croats, with the largest minorities
being Serbs, Slovenes, Hungarians,
Bosnians, Italians, Czechs and
Albanians.
System of government
Croatia is a multi-party parliamen-
tary republic.
Capital
With 779,145 inhabitants, Zagreb is
the economic, transport, cultural and
academic centre of the country.
Length of the coastline
6,176 km, of which 4,398 km is
made up of the coastlines of the
islands, solitary rocks and reefs.

1,244. The largest islands are Cres
and Krk. There are 50 inhabited
islands.
Highest peak
Dinara, 1,831 m above sea level.
Climate:
Croatia has three climatic zones:
Continental, High altitude and
Mediterranean.
The prevailing climate in the coun-
try’s continental interior is moder-
ately rainy. The area of high altitude
with Croatia’s highest peaks have
a mountain climate which includes
snowfall. The areas along the
Adriatic coast have a pleasantly mild
Mediterranean climate with a large
number of sunny days, summers
are hot and dry and winters are mild
and wet.
Average temperatures in the conti-
nental interior are: January -2 to 0o
C, with somewhat lower tempera-
tures at the highest altitudes; August
approximately 20 oC, with around 12
o
C at the highest altitudes. Average
temperature in the Littoral (Adriatic
Coast) are: January -5 to 9 oC,
August -22 to 25 oC; sea tempera-
ture in winter 12 oC, in summer ap-
proximately 25 oC.
Currency:
The kuna (1 kuna = 100 lipa).
Foreign currency can be exchanged
in banks, exchange offices, post

offices and in the majority of tourist
information offices, travel agencies,
hotels, campsites and marinas.
Credit cards (Eurocard / Mastercard,
Visa, American Express and Diners)
are accepted in almost all hotels,
marinas, restaurants and campsites.

Customs regulations:
Customs regulations in the Republic
of Croatia are almost entirely har-
monised with EU standards, but
the value of those non-commercial
items that are brought into the coun-
try for personal use and are exempt
from tax duty or PDV (VAT), is lim-
ited to only 300 HRK (kuna).
Foreign and local currency and
cheques may be freely taken in
and out of the country by both
foreign and Croatian citizens with
foreign residence, but transfers of
an amount exceeding 10,000 Euros
must be declared to a customs of-
ficial. Valuable professional equip-
ment and other technical devices
must also be declared to a customs
official at the border crossing.
Tax is refunded to foreign nationals
when leaving the country - for indi-
vidual goods purchased in Croatia,
for amounts of at least 500 HRK,
upon the presentation of a PDV-P or
“Tax-cheque” form that has been
verified by a customs official.

The import of live animals is possi-
ble only with the necessary veteri-
nary documentation that certifies the
animals’ state of health. Cats and
dogs must be fitted with an electron-
ic identification system (microchip).
Up to five pets can be imported at
any border crossing, but more than
five pets can only be brought in at a
border crossing where there is the
facility for a veterinary inspection to
be carried out.
When travelling with your pet,
you are responsible for it
When bringing your pet into the
Republic of Croatia, it is your re-
sponsibility to meet all the conditions
necessary for its importation. Please

check, whether your pet has been
vaccinated on time and whether it
has a valid passport or veterinary
certificate. If your pet does not meet
these criteria then it can be returned
to the country of origin or quaran-
tined at the border crossing at your
expense.
In line with the Regulations about
the non-commercial transportation
of pets, the following animals are
considered pets: dogs, cats, mem-
bers of the marten family (pet ferrets
– Mustela putorius), invertebrates
(except for bees and crayfish), or-
namental tropical fish, amphibians,
reptiles, all bird species (except for
poultry), rodents and rabbits.
Maximum number of animals
The importation of a maximum of
five animals can be considered
as non-commercial. The animals
and their documents need to be
inspected by a customs official at a
border crossing of the Republic of
Croatia. These animals will not be
considered a commodity and must
be accompanied by their owner or
a person authorised by the owner
to accompany them for the entirety
of the trip. If more than five pets are
imported, this will be considered to
be a commercial import, and the
animals will need to enter the coun-
try at authorized veterinary stations
and undergo a veterinary examina-
tion by a veterinary inspector at the
border crossing.
Conditions
General conditions for dogs, cats
and members of the marten fam-
ily (pet ferrets – Mustela putorius)
coming from member countries of
the European Union and low-risk
countries outside the EU*:
• They must be fitted with an
electronic identification system
(microchip). If the animal is fitted
with a microchip that is not in line
with the ISO Standard 11784 or
17785, the owner must provide
the appropriate microchip scanner.
The name and address of the ani-
mal’s owner must be determinable
at all times. The animal’s passport
or certificate, which is transported
with the animal, needs to contain
the microchip number that has
been issued by a veterinarian.
• They must be accompanied by a
passport or certificate issued by
a veterinarian authorised by the
relevant body.
• They must be vaccinated against
rabies
Animals coming from EU countries,
or countries outside the EU that are
considered low-risk*, that are under
three months of age and have not
been vaccinated against rabies,
can be imported into the territory of
the Republic of Croatia if they have
been living in the same place since
birth and have not been in contact
with wild animals or are travelling
with their mother on whom they are
still dependent.

Dogs, cats and members of the
marten family coming from high-risk
countries* must fulfil the following
conditions:
• they must be fitted with an
electronic identification system
(microchip)
• they must have a veterinary certifi-
cate issued by an official veteri-
narian or, at re-entry, a passport
(dogs from Croatia, for instance)
• they must be vaccinated against
rabies
• they must have undergone a test
on the neutralization of the rabies
virus antibodies with the titration of
antibodies equalling at least 0.5 IJ/
ml on a sample taken by a certified
veterinarian 30 days after vac-
cination at the earliest and three
months prior to transfer. The test
needs to have been conducted
in an authorized laboratory. A

The stipulated period of three
months is not applicable in the
case of the re-entry of pets from the
Republic of Croatia whose passport
confirms that the titration of antibod-
ies with a positive result has been
carried out before the animal left the
Republic of Croatia.
Animals imported and shipped com-
mercially need to be examined by a
veterinarian prior to shipment.

Health services
There are hospitals and clinics locat-
ed in all the larger towns and cities,
while smaller centres have dispen-
saries and pharmacies.
Foreign visitors who are covered
by health insurance in their own
country are not obliged to pay for
emergency medical services dur-
ing a private stay in the Republic
of Croatia if a convention on Social
Security has been signed between
Croatia and the visitors’ country of
origin, i.e. if they have in their pos-
session a certificate stipulated by
such a convention confirming their
right to health care. Health care
(including transport) is used for
emergency cases in the manner and
according to regulations valid for
Croatian citizens covered by Social
Security, with identical participa-
tion in health care costs (participa-
tion and administrative charges).
Persons coming from countries with
which no such convention has been
signed personally bear the costs of
health services rendered.

p.m. on weekdays, and many of

weekend.

Post offices are open from 7 a.m. to
7 p.m. on weekdays, in smaller cen-
tres from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. Some
offices work a split shift. In most
towns and tourist centres, there are
post offices are open on Saturdays
and Sundays.
Phone cards are used in all pub-
lic telephones and may be pur-
chased from post offices and from
newspaper and tobacco kiosks.

power outlets in Croatia are of the
Continental two-pin type, therefore a

the Croatian Adriatic Sea are of a

Radio news in foreign languages
during the tourist season
Croatian Radio broadcasts pro-
grammes in foreign languages
designed for tourists in Croatia on
several frequencies.
A daily programme is broadcast at
8:05 pm on channel one, in English,
for the duration of around 10 min.
During the summer season,
Channel two of the Croatian Radio
(98,5 Mhz – north-western Croatia
and the Dubrovnik Littoral; 105,3
Mhz – Istria; 96,1 – Split; 98,9 – the
Makarska Littoral; 93,3 – Gorski
kotar) will, in addition to regular
news in Croatian, broadcast news
in English, German, Italian and
Czech languages every hour on
the hour from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m.,
and in the summer (from 18 June
9
to 9 September). HAK (the Croatian
Automobile Club) will provide
reports on the road conditions in
English and in German.
During the summer period, news
and reports on the condition of the
roads will also be broadcast, every
hour on the hour, directly from the
studios of: the Third Channel of
Austrian Radio, RAI Uno, British
Virgin Radio, Radio Prague and
the International Station of Croatian
Radio – “Voice of Croatia”.
During the summer, Radio Prague
reporters broadcast news for their
nationals staying in Croatia via the
following regional radio stations:
Radio Split, Radio Dubrovnik and

CROATIA BY CAR
Documents:
To enter Croatia, a driver’s licence,
an automobile registration card and
vehicle insurance documents are
required.
An international driving licence is
required for the use of rent-a-car
services. The permit is issued by the
parent motor-club.
Speed Limits:
50 km/h - within settled areas
90 km/h - outside settled areas
110 km/h - on major roadways de-
signed exclusively for motor vehi-
cles, and on highways
130 km/h - on motorways
80 km/h - for motor vehicles with a
caravan trailer
80 km/h - for buses and buses with
a light trailer; on motorways, buses
are allowed to drive up to 100 km/h,
except for those buses carrying
children
Please reduce and adjust your
speed in wet road conditions.
Regulations:
Driving with dipped headlights is
obligatory during winter time.
The use of mobile telephones while
driving is forbidden!
The use of seat belts is obligatory.
A reflective sleeveless jacket is an
obligatory part of every vehicle’s
emergency equipment. The driver is
obliged to wear it when he or she is
on the road, outside the car (chang-
ing a tyre, doing repair works on the
car, filling up with petrol, stopping
other cars in an attempt to seek
help, etc.)

In larger cities and on the motor-
ways, petrol stations are open 24
hours a day.
All petrol stations sell Eurosuper 95,
Super 95, Super 98, Super plus 98
and Normal petrol and Euro Diesel
fuel. Gas (LPG) is also available in
major cities and at petrol stations on
motorways.

SAILING IN THE REPUBLIC
OF CROATIA
The skipper of a vessel entering the
territorial waters of the Republic of
Croatia by sea is obliged to take the
shortest route to the nearest port
open to international traffic, in order
to carry out border control formali-
ties, to obtain the relevant official
vignette (sticker) and for the verifica-
tion of crew member and passenger
lists at the Harbour Master’s Office,
or branch office.
The skipper of a vessel which is
brought into Croatia by road, or
which is moored in a port or in some
other approved location within the
Republic of Croatia, is obliged to ob-
tain the official vignette (sticker) and
to verify the list of crew members
and passengers (to retain the serv-
ices of a skipper if required), in the
Harbour Master’s Office, or a branch
office, prior to setting out to sea.
The vignette (sticker) must be ob-
tained for a vessel of 3 m or more in

length, as well as a vessel less than
3 m in length if its total propulsion
power is 5 kW or more.
The official vignette (sticker) is
not obligatory for a vessel using
only oars/paddles, regardless of
its length (such as a kayak, beach
canoe, pedal-boat or similar).
The official vignette is not needed by
a vessel while in storage in a port or
in any other such approved place in
the Republic of Croatia.
Small watercraft, such as jet-skis,
are subject to the same regulations
with regards to obtaining a vignette.
The official vignette (sticker) must
be displayed in a visible location on
the vessel. Its period of validity is
one year from the date of issue. The
counterfoil of the vignette must be
affixed (adhered) to the vessel’s list
of persons.
A vessel sailing in the Republic of
Croatia must carry the following
original documents:
The official vignette (sticker)
Verified list of crew and passengers
Verified list of persons who can stay
aboard the vessel (for vessels which
intend to change crews while sailing
in the Republic of Croatia)
Proof of seaworthiness of the vessel
Proof that the skipper of the vessel
is able and qualified to command
the vessel
Proof of third party insurance
Proof of ownership, or the owner’s
authorisation to use the vessel.
List of crew members and pas-
sengers and list of persons
The list of crew and passengers
includes crew members and pas-
sengers who are on the vessel, and
is approved by signature and seal
at the Harbour Master’s Office or
branch office.
If the skipper of a vessel does not
intend to change crew during their
stay in Croatia waters and while the
official vignette is valid, they do not
need to further report to the Harbour
Master’s Office or branch office.
Vessels with no facilities for ex-
tended stay (with no bunks) do not
need to have a crew member and
passenger list.
In Croatia, the skipper of a vessel
can disembark their crew (or some
of them) with whom they arrived
from abroad, and take on a new
crew, in which case they are obliged
to register the change of crew with
the Harbour Master’s Office, and to
leave Croatian waters with this new
crew.
List of persons
The skipper of a vessel intending
to change their crew while sailing in
the Republic of Croatia is obliged
to present to the Harbour Master’s
Office a list of persons who will be
staying on the vessel during the
validity of the vignette. The total
number of persons included in the
List of Persons cannot exceed dou-
ble capacity [plus 30%] of the unit
capacity of the vessel.

The capacity of the vessel is defined
according to the vessel’s documen-
tation as issued by the competent
authorities of the country under
whose flag the vessel sails, and if
the vessel’s documentation does not
contain information about the capac-
ity, the same shall be calculated in
accordance with the Book of Rules
on boats and yachts and Rules and
Regulations for the statutory certifi-
cation of boats and yachts.
The List of Persons is certified with
the vignette counterfoil.
The List of Persons can be com-
pleted in its entirety at the time the
vignette is obtained, but it can also
be completed later on, at the latest
when individual persons included in
the List first board the vessel.
If the List is filled later on, each addi-
tion must be verified in the Harbour
Master’s Office or its branch office.
The number of changes of persons
included in the List of Persons is
unlimited.
The List of Persons does not include
persons staying on a vessel while
the vessel is staying in a port or at
anchor.
The List of Persons does not include
children under 12 years of age, and
they are not included in the maxi-
mum number of persons.
The List of Persons on vessels arriv-
ing by sea need not be presented at
the same time the official vignette is
obtained, as it can also be present-
ed later when crew members are
changed in Croatia.
It is not necessary to compile a
separate List of Persons for tenders
belonging to a yacht or boat - a copy
of the List of Persons of the yacht or
boat will be deemed sufficient.
Registration of residence
All foreigners entering the Republic
of Croatia on a floating vessel
intended for sports and recreation,
and who intend to use those vessels
for accommodation, are obliged to
check their registration of residence
in the Republic of Croatia only in
the port or harbour in which they
undergo border control.
If a foreigner crosses the State bor-
der at one of the road border cross-
ings, and is transporting the vessel
they intend to reside in, the marina
where the vessel will be launched
checks the registration.
If the vessel is launched in a small
port, the visitor is obliged to per-
sonally sort out their residence at
the police station in authority of the
territory.
These regulations are applicable
exclusively if a foreigner intends to
reside on the vessel.
Foreigners whose vessels are
docked in one of the Croatian mari-
nas are obliged to report their arrival
at the marina.
Vessels sailing from the Republic
of Croatia
The skipper of a vessel due to sail
out of the Republic of Croatia is un-
der the following obligations:

- To pass border control at one of
the ports open to international traffic;
- To verify the list of crew members
and passengers at the Harbour
Master’s Office or its branch.
Having fulfilled his or her obliga-
tions, the skipper of a vessel must
leave the coastal waters and the
territorial waters of the Republic
of Croatia by the shortest possible
route.
Foreigners navigating Croatian
boats and yachts
In accordance with amendments to
the Regulation on boats and yachts,
in effect since February 11, 2009,
the Republic of Croatia unilaterally
recognizes licences of foreign coun-
tries for the navigation of Croatian

FOOD AND DRINK
Where to eat?
Apart from hotels offering both full
board and half board accommo-
dation, restaurants, inns, taverns,
wine cellars, pizzerias and fast-food
restaurants can be found in all cities,
tourist towns and along the main
roads. Restaurants and inns offering
local Croatian cuisine will be of par-
ticular interest to gourmets.
All foods of animal origin are sub-
ject to the same standards as in
countries in the European Union
and are under constant veterinary
and health supervision.
What to eat?
In addition to standard European
cuisine, Croatia offers its most
popular local dishes and special-
ties. Among the cold dishes there is
the renowned Dalmatian or Istrian
prosciutto, the cheeses of the island
of Pag or the Lika region, sheep’s
cheese, the Slavonian kulen (a spicy
cured pork meat speciality), the re-
nowned garlic sausages (češnjovka)
of Samobor and the Zagorje region,
fresh cottage cheese with cream.
The main dishes on offer vary
depending on the area that you are
visiting. In Dalmatia, the Primorje
coastal area, on the islands and in
Istria, the dishes are based largely
on fish and other seafood, or meat
dishes such as the pašticada (a
stewed lamb dish).
In continental Croatia, there is a
wide selection of meat dishes,
including the particularly prized
roast turkey with mlinci (boiled rolled
pastry), roast lamb, roast suckling
pig, and boiled or baked štrukli (thin
rolled pastry stuffed with fresh cot-
tage cheese and cream). Among
desserts, apart from the already
mentioned štrukli, there are walnut
loaf, poppy seed loaf, and cheese or
fruit strudel.

What to drink?
The cultivation of grapes are the
production of choice, select wines
is a centuries-old tradition among
Croatian viticulturists both in conti-
nental Croatia, in the Primorje area
(the Littoral) and Dalmatia. Some of
the best known varieties of Croatian
red wines along the Adriatic coast
and on the islands are: Dingač,
Teran, Merlot, Cabernet, Opolo,
Plavac, Postup, and the most ap-
preciated of the white wine varie-
ties are: Pošip, Malvasia, Pinot,
Kujundžuša, Žlahtina and Muscat.
In continental parts one can enjoy
Riesling, Graševina, Burgundy,
Traminac and others. As far as
spirits go, there is a range of various
kinds of rakija (brandy). The most
famous is undoubtedly the šljivovica
or plum brandy, travarica (brandy
with herbs), lozovača (grape
brandy), while among dessert drinks
there are Prošek and Maraschino.
