Become an actvist in promotng healthful behaviors and try your best to remain actve and healthy
the rest of your life.
How to do it? Follow these easy health tps for seniors to help you live longer and thrive:

1. Quit smoking. Take this critcal step to improve your health and combat aging. Smoking kills by causing
cancer, strokes and heart failure. Smoking leads to atherosclerosis and to excessive wrinkling by atacking
skin elastcity. Many resources are available to help you quit.
2. Keep actve. Do something to keep ft each daysomething you enjoy that maintains strength, balance
and fexibility and promotes cardiovascular health. Physical actvity helps you stay at a healthy weight,
prevent or control illness, sleep beter, reduce stress, avoid falls and look and feel beter, too. Check out
the wide variety of ftness programs available right here at the Center. There is something for everyone.
3. Eat well. Combined with physical actvity, eatng nutritous foods in the right amounts can help keep
you healthy. Many illnesses, such as heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and
osteoporosis, can be prevented or controlled with dietary changes and exercise. Calcium and vitamin D
supplements can help women prevent osteoporosis.
4. Maintain a healthy weight. Extra weight increases your risk for heart disease, diabetes and high blood
pressure. Use a BMI (body mass index) calculator to fnd out what you should weigh for your height. Get to
your healthy weight and stay there by eatng right and keeping actve. Replace sugary drinks with water
water is calorie free!
5. Prevent falls. We become vulnerable to falls as we age. Prevent falls and injury by removing loose
carpet or throw rugs. Keep paths clear of electrical cords and cluter, and use night lights in hallways and
bathrooms. Did you know that people who walk barefoot fall more frequently? Wear shoes with good
support to reduce the risk of falling.
6. Stay up-to-date on immunizatons and other health screenings. By age 50, women should begin
mammography screening for breast cancer. Men can be checked for prostate cancer. Many preventve
screenings are available. Those who are new to Medicare are enttled to a Welcome to Medicare visit
and all Medicare members to an annual wellness visit. Use these visits to discuss which preventatve
screenings and vaccinatons are due.
7. Prevent skin cancer. As we age, our skin grows thinner; it becomes drier and less elastc. Wrinkles
appear, and cuts and bruises take longer to heal. Be sure to protect your skin from the sun. Too much sun
and ultraviolet rays can cause skin cancer.
8. Get regular dental, vision and hearing checkups. Your teeth and gums will last a lifetme if you care for
them properlythat means daily brushing and fossing and getng regular dental checkups. By age 50,
most people notce changes to their vision, including a gradual decline in the ability to see small print or
focus on close objects. Common eye problems that can impair vision include cataracts and glaucoma.
Hearing loss occurs commonly with aging, ofen due to exposure to loud noise.
9. Manage stress. Try exercise or relaxaton techniquesperhaps meditaton or yogaas a means of
coping. Make tme for friends and social contacts and fun. Successful coping can afect our health and how
we feel. Learn the role of positve thinking.
10. Come to Moriah Senior Center. Our nutritous food will keep your body on the right track and theres

I won't describe what I look like. Whatever you're
thinking, it's probably worse.
August Pullman was born with a facial deformity that, up
untl now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream
school. Startng 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants
nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kidbut
his new classmates cant get past Auggies extraordinary
face. Wonder, now a #1 New York Times bestseller and
included on the Texas Bluebonnet Award master list,
begins from Auggies point of view, but soon switches to
include his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and
others. These perspectves converge in a portrait of one
communitys struggle with empathy, compassion, and
acceptance.

In a world where bullying among young people is an epidemic, this is a refreshing
new narratve full of heart and hope. R.J. Palacio has called her debut novel a
meditaton on kindness indeed, every reader will come away with a greater
appreciaton for the simple courage of friendship. Auggie is a hero to root for, a
diamond in the rough who proves that you cant blend in when you were born to
stand out.

Why do we commemorate Independence Day by
setting off thousands of small explosions?
Because John Adams wanted us to!

Before the Declaration of Independence was even signed, he envisioned fireworks as a
part of the festivities. In a letter to Abigail Adams on July 3, 1776, he wrote that the
occasion should be commemorated with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports,
Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from
this Time forward forever more. The first commemorative Independence Day fireworks
were set off on July 4, 1777. The Pennsylvania Evening Post wrote that in Philadelphia,
The evening was closed with the ring of bells, and at night there was a grand exhibition
of fireworks (which began and concluded with thirteen rockets) on the Commons, and the
city was beautifully illuminated. The paper noted that Everything was conducted with
the greatest order and decorum, and the face of joy and gladness
was universal. That same year, fireworks also lit up the sky in
Boston, where they were exhibited by
Col. Thomas Crafts over the commons. .
