SMS (electronic text messaging)

The basic principles governing Spanish SMS abbreviations are

similar to those governing English SMS. Certain words or
syllables can be represented by letters or numbers that sound
the same but take up less space. Also, points, accents, and other
diacritics are omitted altogether. For example, the syllable -ca
can be replaced by k, the word por by x, the syllable or
conjunction que by q and the syllable es- at the start of a
word can be substituted by s. Another way of shortening
words is simply to omit certain letters, especially vowels.
For example, bastante becomes bstnt, gente becomes gnt,
and hola can be replaced by hl.
As in English, emoticons are very popular, and some of the
more established ones are included in the table below.

SMS es la abreviatura inglesa de Short Message (o Messaging)
Service, que se traduce como Servicio de Mensajes Cortos.
Los principios bsicos que rigen el uso de las abreviaturas
SMS en ingls son bastante simples. Se pueden utilizar todas las
abreviaturas y signos convencionales ingleses establecidos,
pero sin puntos. Algunas palabras o slabas se pueden
representar con una letra o un nmero que suene igual o
parecido. Por ejemplo, la letra C suena igual que la palabra
see(o tambien sea), U suena igual que you, el nmero 8
(eight) se puede sustituir por el sonido /-ayt/. De este modo,see
you later se abrevia como CUL8R, a lo cual se podra contestar
GR8 (great). Tambien es comn simplemente omitir ciertas
letras, especialmente las vocales. Por ejemplo, message se
convierte en MSG, please se sustituye por PLS y speak se
cambia por SPK. La mayora de las abreviaturas SMS se derivan
de las letras iniciales de frases comnes, como por ejemplo FYI
for your information, TTYL talk to you later. Estas
abreviaturas pueden parecer un poco crpticas al principio,
pero con la prctica es fcil aprender a identificar su
significado.
Igual que en espaol los emoticonos son muy populares en
los mensajes SMS. Algunos de los ms comunes se incluyen
ms abajo.
